CUT and Wits secured their spots in the final after beating UWC and UKZN respectively in the eighth round of the Varsity Shield.
With two rounds remaining, the two teams have built a gap too big at the top of the log. All that’s left to play for is a home final as CUT only lead Wits by two log points on the standings. The former is likely to claim first place and host the final in Bloemfontein as they have a game in hand. The play-off will be played in three weeks time.
CUT confirmed their final berth with a tight 30-29 home win over UWC.
After leading 24-12 at the break, UWC fought back to make it 30-29 at the death as centre Adrian Herman and wing Anthony Volminck dotted down and fullback Ambrose Steyn slotted a 60m drop goal. This created an intense finish to the match and it seemed the visitors snatched a great comeback victory as they crossed the chalk in the dying seconds, but the referee disallowed the try as penalised UWC for obstruction.
Wits booked their place in the top two as they crushed UKZN 51-5 in a bonus-point triumph in Johannesburg.
The hosts ran in seven tries with No 8 Jason Fraser and wing Nkuli Gamede grabbing a brace each while centre Brendon Lizamore added 16 points with the boot via five conversions and two penalties. UKZN Lock Tinashe Bopoto managed to score Impis’ only points at the death.
