Wits received a big confidence booster as they beat fellow finalists CUT 26-22 while Fort Hare held on for a 28-22 victory against UKZN in the ninth round of the Varsity Shield.
The away victory sees Wits jump to the top of the standings but CUT could still book a home final if they win their last fixture against UKZN in Pietermaritzburg next week. However, winning in Bloemfontein will give Wits the mental advantage heading into the match that will decide who will take on TUT in the Varsity Cup promotion/relegation play-off.
It was CUT who were up at the break as fullback Andre le Roux kicked four penalties for a 12-8 advantage. The lead jumped several times in the second stanza but the visitors sealed the game as inside centre Rudolf Prinsloo slotted a penalty and wing Riaan Arends dotted down at the death.
In Alice, Fort Hare picked up their second win of the campaign as they beat Impis at home.
The hosts took the lead as lock Sokhana Mkona crossed the chalk and flyhalf Saneliso Ngoma converted a penalty. However, fullback Jaco Potgieter put UKZN 13-8 ahead as he scored a try and added the conversion and two penalties. Fort Hare scored two more tries in the second stanza to seal the game.
