Blitzboks cruise into Cup play-offs

The Springbok Sevens thumped Wales 42-12 as they finished day two unbeaten at the Hong Kong tournament on Saturday.
After wins against Spain (on day one) and Hong Kong, Paul Treu’s charges completed the group stage with a comprehensive victory against Wales – a win that sees them top Pool E. Speedster Cecil Afrika has played a key role for South Africa and he’s been supported by the likes of skipper Kyle Brown, Paul Delport and Frankie Horne. A big positive is seeing youngsters like Paul Jordaan (19), Tshotsho Mbovane (18) and Sibusiso Sithole (20) excelling on the World Series stage.
The gamble of picking these youngsters ahead of other senior players, who have been left at home, has paid off for Treu, who is gradually building a strong and balanced squad. After their impressive displays on day one and two, they will face a tricky Cup quarter-final tie against Fiji on Sunday.
Against Wales, the Blitzboks crossed the whitewash twice in a space of two minutes as Afrika continued his try-scoring spree and Sithole dived over. Rhodri Davies hit back for Wales but South Africa stretched their lead to 21-5 as Paul Delport grabbed a late score.
After half-time, Wales started well with Alex Cuthbert reducing their deficit. However, it was all Blitzboks form then on as Delport, Sithole and Mbovane scored tries to seal a good win.
Against Hong Kong, the Blitzboks delivered a good all-round performance as they scored seven tries to clinch the convincing win while their impressive defence restricted the home team from reaching the chalk. Chris Dry starred for South Africa as he scored a hat-trick while speedster Afrika also grabbed a brace.
After two minutes, the Blitzboks already built a 14-point advantage as Sithole and Afrika scored early tries. Dry and Delport added to the lead while Afrika completed his brace to see South Africa 33-0 up at the break.
In the second stanza, Dry scored the Blitzboks’ last two tries to finish off a big win.
