KES bring down the house

Bouncing back after their opening loss against Dale, KES flattened Michaelhouse 61-3 on day two of the Grey Rugby Festival.

KES dominated from the opening whistle, scoring nine tries in total, eight of which were converted. KES broke the defensive line with ease and opened the scoring with an early try, to which Michaelhouse could only respond with a penalty. Two further tries put Michaelhouse on the ropes, with KES fullback Gareth Wildman’s try keeping them there and giving his side a 26-3 half-time lead.

Another five tries, including one from centre Wuan Steinhobel, who darted past four players finishing beneath the posts, gave them 35 unanswered second-half points.

Earlier in the day Louis Botha recorded a 30–5 victory over Nico Malan after leading 13-0 at the break. Graeme College, playing their first match of the festival, hung on for a 7-5 victory.

Kearsney again swept aside their opponents, this time Itembelihle, 33-0 having led 12-0 at the break with two tries and added a further three in the second. Having been outscored two tries to one, Queen’s were helped by Westville’s ill-discipline, winning 19-10 thanks to four penalties.

Despite a slow second half (having led 21-3 at the break), Dale downed DHS 27-15 thanks to a brace by fullback Siviwe Soyizwapi and 12 points from the boot of scrumhalf Bangi Kobese.

Prop Ryan Germishuys’ two converted tries gave Selborne a 19-7 half-time lead, which they would not surrender. After conceding another two tries. Hilton finished strongly with two tries of their own to make it 31-17.

A conversion and penalty separated Bishops and Maritzburg College after both sides had scored three tries each, with the former taking the match 22-17 to come back from their day one loss to Selborne. Meanwhile, Daniel Pienaar missed a late conversion to give Pretoria Boys a 20-19 win.

Hosts Grey closed the day with a 19-10 win over Jeppe, coming back from a 10-6 half-time deficit on the back of 14 points from Jan Enslin.
