SA latest – Coetzee sticks with winning combo

Keo.co.za brings you news from South Africa’s Super Rugby franchises.

Coetzee sticks with winning combo – Allister Coetzee has made no changes to the Stormers team that beat the Sharks last Saturday.

The Stormers host the Reds at Newlands in what should be a closely contested match, especially up front. Coetzee has resisted the temptation to pick an extra forward on the bench.

Stormers – 15 Gio Aplon, 14 Danie Poolman, 13 Jaque Fourie, 12 Jean de Villiers, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Peter Grant, 9 Dewaldt Duvenage, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Francois Louw, 6 Schalk Burger (c), 5 Andries Bekker, 4 Rynhardt Elstadt, 3 Brok Harris, 2 Deon Fourie, 1 Wicus Blaauw.
Subs: 16 Ethienne Reynecke, 17 CJ van der Linde, 18 De Kock Steenkamp, 19 Nick Koster, 20 Ricky Januarie, 21 Gary van Aswegen, 22 Juan de Jongh.

Drotske turns to Johnson – The injury to Philip van der Walt has prompted the Cheetahs to select Ashley Johnson at No 8.

Van der Walt tore cruciate ligaments in the game against the Blues, and has flown home to Bloemfontein. Davon Raubenheimer takes his place at No 7, while Johnson comes off the bench to start at No 8.

Coach Naka Drotske has rushed Leon Karemaker onto the bench, while Martin Muller and Riaan Smit are also promoted to the matchday 22.

Cheetahs – 15 Riaan Viljoen, 14 Philip Burger, 13 Robert Ebersohn, 12 Corne Uys, 11 Wilmaure Louw, 10 Sias Ebersohn, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Ashley Johnson, 7 Davon Raubenheimer, 6 Kabamba Floors, 5 Wilhelm Steenkamp (c), 4 Francois Uys, 3 WP Nel, 2 Ryno Barnes, 1 Coenie Oosthuizen.
Subs: 16 Skipper Badenhorst 17 Lourens Adriaanse, 18 Martin Muller, 19 Leon Karemaker, 20 Tewis de Bruyn, 21 Naas Olivier, 22 Riaan Smit.

Lions get a kick out of Braam – Former Springbok flyhalf Braam van Straaten will help the Lions with their goal-kicking problems.

Van Straaten worked with the Wallabies during the Tri-Nations last year, and has also been helping various players during the 2011 Super Rugby competition. Pat Lambie, James O’Connor and most recently Quade Cooper have all been sent to Van Straaten for assistance.

The former Stormers and Bok goal-kicker should help Andre Pretorius, Burton Francis and Elton Jantjies with their place-kicking. The Lions’ record in this department has been woeful to date.

It will be nice if Karemaker makes it onto the pitch – one of the more interesting players in South African rugby.

He was a stand out player at school level, and then discovered he had a genetic disease which causes his eye sight to deteriorate. After having his contract terminated with WP, he was diagnosed with diabetes, and then managed to pick up a contract in France, playing second division rugby.

After retiring at the age of 24, he was given a shot at the Griquas last year, and now has a chance of making his Super rugby debut.

    Great story.

This new loose trio combo surely beats that of Andre Venter/Rueben Kruger/ Erasmus in the Cheetahs record book ;)
And is a few miles ahead of Vremulen/Juan Smith/Brussow combo for the FS
    A quality in motion,,,,

@WOLFMAN21(WOLFMAN21)-3: I remember watching Karemaker play Craven Week for WP and he was the standout player in that team! Back then I thought he was going to become a great player. It’s unfortunate how his career has been curtailed by his health.

I really hope that he gets his oppurtunity in Super rugby!

A loose trio consisting of all POC , first time in history I think, well done Cheetahs, I think this loose trio will do very well, good luck.

The injury bogey has ravaged the Cheetahs , their playing resources get pillaged every year , the fact that they are able to put out a competitive side is amazing……………………got to respect them !!

@justrugby(justrugby)-6: What is a POC? Please explain…? Is this a new Cape Town PC POV….?

Players of colour, I am not ashamed to say it ??? I think it’s great that these guys are getting a start,!!! ………. the first time in Super rugby history that a loose trio consisiting of all players of colour gets to start, something to celebrate, progress at last been made !!!

It should never be about colour but given our history I am ecstatic about this !!

You have a problem with it ??

Its the circle of life in the PC world….

POC…. Is this a Rainbow designation?

It is not clear…. Its not Black and White.

Its a bit inbetweeny…. Not black enough and not white enough, no?

Is it PC to label POC?

  • 22.Puma: Reply to this comment

Braam has done a fine job with Lambie. He no doubt will do the same at Lions.

Always wonder why Naas Botha has never been utilised as well. Sure he has not played for many years. But one never loses the knowledge. He often explains during a game why the kick never worked for the kicker. Still think he was our best kicker of all time. Whether the stats say so or not.

@Puma(Puma)-22: I would have thought Louis Koen would be involved somewhere along the line. Not much of an attacking flyhalf, but boy could he kick. Is he no longer in Joburg?

  • 27.Taahirah: Reply to this comment

@Puma(Puma)-22: Naas gets paid top dollar as a presenter, hence his reluctance to coach.

Louis had a life changing operation and is now enjoying a very lucrative career on the cruise ship circuit.

  • 30.Puma: Reply to this comment

@>^..^< katman(katman)-26: Not sure where Koen is buddy. But just looking at the kicking. Can’t understand why Naas Botha is not been used. Still think he was our best ever.

Actually always think of C. Calder as well that eye coach. Why is she not being used? By any of the francishes? Think kicking you need to be, not only accurate with the boot but with the eye to posts as well. Boks would be crazy not to rope her in now. Or any of the franchises.

Bluster and bulldust…. Watch the insults fly.
Just because of a question on PC and POC….

    There was the POC three…
    Labelled thus by PC Justrugby…

    What happened to the promises
    To all the doubting Thomases

That it would only about good players be….?

Or is this just another misspeak… Like condone vs condemn…. But benefit of the doubt is lost…. POC ain’t Prohets Of the City, but Player of Colour….

Wonder what players think of being called POCs…?

  • 32.WOLFMAN21: Reply to this comment

@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-31: I reckon Paul O’Connell is alright to be refered to as POC.

Not so sure how much money they make presenting a rugby show. My feeling it can’t be that great. He is very passionate about the game. I think if approched he would consider it. Just not sure why no union has approached him. Now Braam seems to be doing freelance work for all unions. Good on him. But we should be utilising Naas as well imo.

@Puma(Puma)-33: I remember reading a piece on it, when Naas was approached to coach the Pumas I think. He was making 3X the money commentating plus none of the stress. A no-brainer for him.
@WOLFMAN21(WOLFMAN21)-32: That raises the issue: Is Brian O’Driscoll comfortable with the label BOD? Coz lets be honest, a gifted rugby player no doubt but not the finest physical specimen. Does he imagine people sniggering silently when addressing him as such?

From what I heard Jannie De Beer modelled his kicking on Naas Botha’s style. We all know what Jannie done to England in 1999 wc. Those 5 drop goals were bloody brilliant. Also at full time. He slotted a massive kick from half way to equalize with Oz in the semi. Now there was a student of Naas. So looking at that, WHY is Naas not utilised as a kicking freelance coach like Braam?

  • 46.Lucem Petimus: Reply to this comment

hg ,the p ussy, still clowning around.

  • 47.Taahirah: Reply to this comment

@Lucem Petimus(Lucem Petimus)-37: HG was making a point, albeit tongue-in-cheek. He was questioning JR’s (well-published) stance on non-racialism vs his comment on the colour of the loose trio’s skin. In effect, he was asking: Doesnt non-racialism mean being blind to skin colour?
So his stirring had a goal.

@Taahirah(Taahirah)-40: Well not sure how much he could earn at the Pumas. But would think at the bigger unions he would make a lot more.

Still don’t think whatever he earns at dstv is a lot. Not sure what else he does, but he will have to be working on more than just presenting to make a decent living. But if he don’t want to do it then that is probably why none of the bigger unions have approched him.
