SA latest – Jantjes back in blue

SA latest – Jantjes back in blue

Keo.co.za brings you news from South Africa’s Super Rugby franchises.

Jantjes back in blue – Bryan Habana’s shoulder injury has warranted a recall for fullback Conrad Jantjes.

Jantjes will start at No 15 against the Lions with Gio Aplon replacing Habana on the wing. Juan de Jongh will continue at centre in place of Jean de Villiers, who is unavailable due to a groin injury.

Coach Allister Coetzee has also been forced to make a change at lock, with De Kock Steenkamp replacing the injured Rynhardt Elstadt. CJ van der Linde rotates with Brok Harris at prop.

Anton van Zyl will take Steenkamp’s place on the bench.

Stormers – 15 Conrad Jantjes, 14 Danie Poolman, 13 Jaque Fourie, 12 Juan de Jongh, 11 Gio Aplon, 10 Peter Grant, 9 Dewaldt Duvenage, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Francois Louw, 6 Schalk Burger (c), 5 Andries Bekker, 4 De Kock Steenkamp, 3 CJ van der Linde, 2 Deon Fourie, 1 Wicus Blaauw.
Subs: 16 Ethienne Reynecke, 17 Brok Harris, 18 Anton van Zyl, 19 Nick Koster, 20 Ricky Januarie, 21 Gary van Aswegen, 22 Johann Sadie.

Lions’ injury woes worsen – Derrick Minnie and André Pretorius have been added to the Lions’ injury list ahead of their game against the Stormers on Saturday.

Flanker Minnie will be sidelined with a knee injury while Pretorius is likely to miss the Johanessburg clash on Saturday with a leg injury. The Lions are already without the injured fullback James Kamana (broken leg), flanker Josh Strauss and lock George Earle (both concussed).

Utility back Michael Killian is still an injury concern after picking up a hamstring injury against the Reds a fortnight ago.

Geel to front Canes – Barry Geel will start at centre for the Cheetahs against the Hurricanes this Saturday.

The Cheetahs will also be boosted by the return of wing Rayno Benjamin and hooker Adriaan Strauss. Benjamin will start while Strauss will make his comeback from the bench.

Cheetahs – 15 Riaan Viljoen, 14 Philip Burger, 13 Robert Ebersohn, 12 Barry Geel, 11 Rayno Benjamin, 10 Sias Ebersohn, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Davon Raubenheimer, 7 Ashley Johnson, 6 Kabamba Floors, 5 Wilhelm Steenkamp (c), 4 Francois Uys, 3 WP Nel, 2 Ryno Barnes, 1 Coenie Oosthuizen.
Subs: 16 Adriaan Strauss, 17 Lourens Adriaanse, 18 Martin Muller, 19 Leon Karemaker, 20 Tewis de Bruyn, 21 Naas Olivier, 22 Corné Uys.

@Rhys7(Rhys7)-150: Jantjies has had his day. Not even a has-been, but a never was.

No Elstadt???? Cant agree with that.

I would also like to see Nick Groom on the bench instead of Ninja Turtle

Ag nee, man. We just got rid of Habana and now Jantjes is back. Our biggest attacking weapon in Aplon is not going to see the ball the whole damn day and Jantjes is going to have the crowd in awe with his pace…a lack of it.

  • 156.wp_boytjie: Reply to this comment

Jantjies the weakest of all Sa Fullbacks on the counter attack.

Seriously , compared to even Riaan Viljoen or Hennie Daniller the guy has nothing. Just a kicking game.

If only we still had good ol Joe Pietersen and Naqelavuki down here.

A back 3 of Joe Pietersen , Aplon and Fiji.

I think I might skip the Stormers-Lions game this weekend. Jantjes attacking from the back makes Johan Roets look like a creative genius.

  • 159.mshiniwami: Reply to this comment

Jantjes is a Bok be it a former one thus he gets the nod ahead of anyone in same selection race. He was starting 15 before he got injured. This selection criteria is used by majority of coaches in pro set up. Dont be suprised when habs comes back Poolman is relegated to bench.

And those lambasting Habana,go ahead but great players always arise from slumps. I remember when all and sundry were calling for Mils Muliaina to be dropped for first Cory Jane in 2009,then in early 2010 it was Izzy Dagg…But we all know how that turned out…..mils is class & so is HAbana

I smell an upset this weekend. The Lion’s first real scalp of 2011.

very happy to see CJ back at tighthead where he wants to play, a great opportunity for him to show the detractors what he is made of.

Jantjies at 15? I saw him play for wp vodacom team last week, afraid he seemed to lack any real pace, I may have rather given JJ Engelbrecht a shot at wing, a real flyer …..also feel Aplon counter attack from 15 would have been a real plus.

Simply put Stormers have to go full out for a bonus point win against an injury ridden Lions team [ if weather plays ball that is ].

A loss to Lions would be a disaster and show that Stormers still unable to really talk with the big boys.

I sense some attacking and a huge onslaught from Stormers…..

I am one of them, never quite saw the value in CJ.

  • 164.nama1: Reply to this comment

Afa CJ goes, I never really rate him in the past when he played for other teams. Nothing changed now that he is playing for my team, the Stormers. He should learn to get stuck in there and not stand around in the back line waiting to score a head line making try. He is a prop and should play like one.

This game on Saturday makes me more nervous than last weekends. The Lions have prevented us in the past from reaching a semi final by denying Stormers a bonus point or by beating us. They seem to rise up to the occasion against Stormers and they are bound a victory sooner rather than later.

    Nervous times.

Pity about habana….though the rest might be a blessing in disguise…kinda like we all just waiting for him to find top form. Wonder why the stromers dont get that Sheryl Calder to help out….worked a charm in 07.

  • 166.grant10: Reply to this comment

@PissAnt(PissAnt)-163: go see how he handled the wc final 2007

go see how he scrummed in Dunedin 2008.

Problem is his versatality….he is a 3 at heart, at best a reluctant 1.

And I do hope this ‘ break ‘ for him will see him grab the opportunity with both hands…

  • 167.grant10: Reply to this comment

if stormers dont win this game well….then we dont deserve f all….plain and simple.

excuses time long gone….stormers want to be taken serious they have to start showing some fight and attacking nous…..

far too much talent to be dishing up the s hit of last sat .

Time to shape and walk the talk stormers…

@PissAnt(PissAnt)-163: Dont know much about front row play but what iv seen from CJ hasnt been too impressive. Thing is Pdv will probably pick him as a bench player due to his versatility…he plays both 1 and 3. Gonna be interesting coz i think Smit will probably also be on the bench….and he covers 1 and 2. So then we can pick a specialist tight-head ….either CJ, Mujati, Botha

  • 169.Mustard: Reply to this comment

@grant10(grant10)-166: he hasnt shown the form of 07…hes not a destructive scrumager, not going to dominate anyone….if anything hed probably hold his own, and hes work rate around the park (what hes known for) hasnt been too impressive to date. Hopefully with some game time he will improve.

  • 170.grant10: Reply to this comment

    @Mustard(Mustard)-169: ja….

he said in a recent interview that although he is prepared to assist at 1 he really wants to play at 3 where he feels he is best suited. He has not really been given a chance with Brock playing really well.

This is his chance and I do hope he grabs it…..he too has no excuses, he is now in his favorite position, so lets see how he goes….

  • 171.Mustard: Reply to this comment

@grant10(grant10)-170: hes versatility is costing him i think…will end up always being a bench player. if he is going to be picked for the boks he needs to be playing regularly. But for the boks we have much bigger problems than the front row me thinks. Our back row wont have a fetcher and our no.1 enforcer lost his grunt…..our no.14 wing is playing 11 for the sharks…and spies…well the less said the better

In 2007 and 08 Smit was in top form! ;)

It is 3 years on now, and he has not impressed.

But would be happy if he proves me wrong.

  • 173.nama1: Reply to this comment

    @Mustard(Mustard)-171:
His versatility is what gets him selected for the Bok team imo. If not for the fact that he can play on both sides, he probably never would’ve played for SA.

    Habana has a shoulder injury
    When did he pick it?
there was nothing that I watched last 6 games to suggest he might got injured
His absent not critical against the Lions though, especially if Pro Legota will be on hand ;)

  • 175.sharks_lover: Reply to this comment

@Hondo(Hondo)-174: he did go down with an injury and got attention in the last match

you trying to insinuate there is nothing wrong with him??

lambie got injured in the chiefs game which noone was aware of, not even the coaching staff during the match, so he faked it?? they put pins in fakers hands???

come now hondo , so you never saw it means it cant be that he is injured??

at least the sharks won’t lose again this weekend !!!

Sometimes an injury – I’m not talking of a serious nature here – is a blessing in disguise. Obviously, the body needs to recover but it also helps heal the mind. An opportunity to refocus.

Unfortunately, in Habana’s case, he’s dragged some of last year’s poor form into this year’s S15. To me, he seems to tense on the field. That is why he seems to be snatching at the ball instead of relaxing his hands and let the ball come to him. He workrate is high. Pissant has aluded to this.

A couple of weeks off might do the trick. Hope he is working again with Cheryl Calder. Should be an improvement when he’s back.

@I am a stormer(I am a stormer)-177: You right buddy. Sometimes a break does the body and mind good. Read on another blog that Habs has a infection in that shoulder. So not sure how long he will be off.

Also read somewhere here that Calder is working with Ireland now. Whether she is over there right now, not sure of that. But she sure did help Habs plenty.

She should have been with the Boks. How we let her slip out our hands is daft.

London – Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn have both been honoured in the 2011 Wisden Cricketer’s Almanack by being named in their select Test XI for the 2010 calendar year.

The Almanack was officially launched on Wednesday.

    “Respect”

Well done to both Jacques and Dale.

Heard recently that Habana has committed to start working with her again. Hope it helps. Does seem his hand/eye coordination is a bit off. If she makes a difference – well lets see.

  • 184.Yetirat: Reply to this comment

CJ is ok for the first 50 mins. Don’t think he has the legs anymore to go any longer than that. More worrying is the re-introduction of Jantjies. Only reasoning I can think of is to add some kicking power to the back 3.
