Leinster topple Toulouse

Leinster knocked the defending European Cup champions Toulouse out of the tournament with a 32-23 victory at Lansdowne Road.

It was a reversal of the result of this fixture at the same stage of the tournament last year. Ireland internationals Jamie Heaslip and Brian O’Driscoll crossed the whitewash, while Jonathan Sexton kicked 22 points help seal the result. Former Cheetahs hooker Richardt Strauss started for Leinster and impressed.

Toulouse started well with an early try by Florian Fritz, but Heaslip grabbed a try well deserved by the Irish side. Toulouse piled on the pressure just before the break but could not finish, despite O’Driscoll having been binned for a ruck infringement.

Toulouse scored through Louis Picamoles after the restart and David Skrela added the extras, but Sexton kept his side ahead with his superb goal kicking. O’Driscoll glided over for the crucial score and Sexton converted to establish a nine-point lead.

Nicolas Bezy kicked a penalty to bring the scores to within a converted try, but Leinster resisted well and Sexton’s sixth penalty set up a final against either Perpignan or Northampton.
