Saints march into Euro final
1 May 2011
Northampton Saints downed Perpignan 23-7 in the second European Cup semi-final in Milton Keynes on Sunday.
Former Springbok tighthead prop Brian Mujati played a part in Northampton’s dominant forwards display. This set the platform for flyhalf Stephen Myler to kick 13 points with the boot while outside centre Jon Clarke and fullback Ben Foden sealed the victory with a try apiece.
It was all Saints in the first half as Foden and Clarke dotted down inside 30 minutes. Despite being reduced to 14 men when wing Julien Candelon was yellow-carded, Perpignan struck back through hooker Guilhem Guirado shortly before the break. The hosts led 20-7 at half-time.
Northampton only managed to add one Myler penalty in the second stanza but that was enought for the win. The English club will now face Leinster in the final on 21 May after the latter beat Toulouse 32-23 in the first play-off on Saturday.

We don’t have any quality 3′s at the moment and he could just be the answer. The guy is cooking in NH rugby.

@Bill Reyts(Gumboots)-2: impossible unless he gets an SA passport – he is in the same boat that Beast was when he became ineligible for selection.

Yeah it is a pity I guess! How did he play for SA without one in the first place?

Saints played a really good game and deserved to win. It is a pity that the best of the Super15 cannot compete with the best of the Heineken Cup!
Bill, they became eligible to play for SA on WRU’s criteria, even though they were both not SA citizens at that stage. Makes you wonder how many players in the England cricket team still travells on other passports!!

WRU? Meant IRB!

Watched this game. I’m still underwelmed with the STD of N-hemisphere club play.
Players tend to be less athletic. Very little innovation in the backs – like south Africa but the backs are slower or smaller.
The intensity and speed of play just does not compare to the super15.
It’s simply why Southern players up north always look good!!

I find it funny how there was a ridiculous media blitz from KEO about bringing BJ Botha home a few years ago when he was a leading Tighthead in Europe. This time around Mujati is clearly the dominant Tighthead in European rugby but receiving less of the fanfare……food for thought

Vuyisile should be brought back

“Mujati is clearly the dominant Tighthead”
