Paul Roos denied by Bosch penalty
8 May 2011
A controversial last-minute penalty from Rondebosch brought a dramatic second half to a close and saw them draw 17 apiece with Paul Roos.
Though a draw may have been the right result between two evenly matched sides, inside centre Hilio de Abreu’s controversial last-minute penalty which brought Rondebosch back from the brink of defeat will be hotly contested.
The referee overruled his touchline officials to award the penalty, which looked to have slid past the posts, but Paul Roos have no-one but themselves to blame for not converting pressure into points, failing to convert 70 minutes of dominance into a convincing lead.
Only 10-7 up early in the second-half despite a monopoly on possession, simple errors from Paul Roos and great defence from the hosts saw no change to the score until the final seven minutes, when rare spells of Rondebosch ball brought the game to life.
De Abreu converted extended phases into a converted try when he burst through the middle of a ruck, giving the hosts a 14-10 lead. Paul Roos countered quickly, lock Jan Uys bustling over in the corner. Luhann de Kock added the extras to take a three point lead. But the Bosch boys were able to retain possession again, and forced a penalty inside opposition 22 which would save them from a home defeat.
Rondebosch: Tries: Nicholas Roebeck, Hilio de Abreu. Conversions: De Abreu (2). Penalty: De Abreu.
Paul Roos: Tries: Dalen Goliath, Jan Uys. Conversions: Luhann de Kock (2). Penalty: De Kock.
In another big Cape clash, Paarl Boys’ travelled to Bishops for what proved to be a great match between the two Top 10 sides. Bishops captain Tarquin Carlsson again showed his worth with the opening try, but visitors hit back quickly through wing Arthur Festus. Penalties were exchanged as Paarl Boys’ found dominance up front, and they went into the half-time break 11-8 ahead.
The visitors came out firing in the second half, adding 10 points for a 13-point lead which they held into the later stages of the half.
Kris Otto reduced the deficit with a converted try to leave the score at 21-15 with 10 minutes remaining but the Paarl Boys’ pack would not loosen its hold on the match, and JE van der Merwe dived over in the dying stages to close out the clash.
Paarl Boys’ High: Tries: Arthur Festus, Ignis Nagel, JE van der Merwe. Conversions: Ryno Smith (2). Penalties: Smith (2). Drop-goal: Ruben van Zyl.
Bishops: Tries: Tarquin Carlsson, Kris Otto. Conversion: Tim Swiel. Penalty: Swiel.
