Selborne take sting out of Grey College

Grey College remained unbeaten but Selborne’s effort in East London was as good as win.
The Eastern Cape Schools side, having been Grey’s whipping boy for the past decade, changed it all with a deserved 16-all draw.
Grey College have been run close in several matches this season, most notably by Monument (18-14), Paarl Gymnasium (14-10) and Waterkloof (21-16), but there was no houdini escape against Selborne and the winning run has been halted at 10 matches this season.
Every other school in the country would settle for nine wins and a draw against the very best in the country, but not Grey College. In East London the draw was as good as a defeat.

Hey Keo I understand that the Selborne College /Grey College game was played in East London.
Nevertheless what your report does not mention is a fact that absolutely astounds me. Grey College I am told play the game with 15 +7 reserves. Selborne on the other hand do NOT utilise any reserves and only bring on a replacement if a player has to leave the field permanently due to injury……and that player would have played in a previous game (normally from the 2nd team). Can you imagine a professional team doing that? Come on Selborne..wake up and stop giving yourself an unfair handicap. Especially when you play the best team in the country!

Your point is a bit ambiguous, the first time I read it it seemed like you were implying Selbourne had the advantage.
You’re right, Grey will always have an advantage if they use 7 ‘full time’ reserves but if you ask me that seems a bit much for school boy level. The sport should be more about participation than results.

@Lions_Soutie(Lions_Soutie)-2: the original report said that the game was in Bloemfontein. Hence my first sentence and paragraph.
Your argument is a good one but I think that at 1st team school level in SA it seems to be all about results now. And hence why Selborne are handicapping themselves.

@XV one must remember Selborne only has +-700 boys while Grey College have well over a 1000 Pupils. So Asking for a more professional approach (including 7 players on the bench) will only mean you watering down the quality of rugby at the school. However the focus is slowly shifting towards a more modern approach the school has invested a substantial amount of money in its sporting programme over the past few seasons with the building of a new school gym the hiring of a personal trainer and dietitian, and the full time employment of a physiotherapist. The draw over the past weekend for the 1st XV and the fact that the rest of the games weren’t the normal “cricket scores” is testament to this. Hopefully with a lot of hard work the tides can slowly start too turn, looking forward too seeing more talents in the likes of the Mark Andrew’s, Brent Russells and Andre Vos’s being molded at the school.

Schools in the eastern cape hardly ever use the 22 match day squad system.Grey P.E has 1300+ boys but they still have a starting XV for the day only with their reserves playing for the 2nd XV.Queens,Dale and St.Andrews also apply that system. The bigger Rugby playing schools however e.g Monnas,paul roos,affies etc employ the 22 matchday squad.

@Damo(DAmo374)-4: Thanks for that. I just think that its about time the Eastern Cape schools modernised their thinking. The talent in the Eastern Cape is undoubted……with a more professional approach the results will improve and slowly the area will attract more investment etc. Success begets success.
