NZ latest – McCaw, Carter return

Keo.co.za brings you news from New Zealand’s Super Rugby franchises.

McCaw, Carter return – Richie McCaw and Dan Carter have recovered from their respective injuries and will start against the Cheetahs on Saturday.

Ben Franks is also back in the front row in one of the few unforced changes to the side that won in Cape Town. Because of the injuries to Kahn Fotuali’I, Israel Dagg, Sean Maitland and Adam Whitelock, coach Todd Blackadder has had to bring in some new faces.

Will Heinz (scrumhalf), Tom Marshall (fullback) and Ryan Crotty (centre) are all in the starting line-up with Brent Ward coming onto the bench. Crotty will play outside centre which will see Robbie Fruean moving to the wing.

Crusaders – 15 Tom Marshall, 14 Robbie Fruean, 13 Ryan Crotty, 12 Sonny Bill Williams, 11 Zac Guildford, 10 Dan Carter, 9 Willi Heinz; 8 Kieran Read, 7 Richie McCaw (c), 6 George Whitelock, 5 Chris Jack, 4 Luke Romano, 3 Owen Franks, 2 Corey Flynn, 1 Ben Franks.
Subs: 16 Quentin MacDonald, 17 Wyatt Crockett, 18 Joe Wheeler, 19 Matt Todd, 20 Steve Alfeld, 21 Matt Berquist, 22 Brent Ward.

Latimer boost for Chiefs – The Chiefs have made just one change with Tanerau Latimer reinstated at openside flank for Saturday’s match against the Stormers. Latimer returns from a concussion to replace Scott Waldrom.

Chiefs - 15 Mils Muliaina (c), 14 Lelia Masaga, 13 Richard Kahui, 12 Dwayne Sweeney, 11 Sitiveni Sivivatu, 10 Stephen Donald, 9 Brendon Leonard: 8 Fritz Lee, 7 Tanerau Latimer, 6 Liam Messam, 5 Romana Graham, 4 Craig Clarke, 3 Ben Afeaki, 2 Hika Elliot, 1 Toby Smith.
Subs: 16 Aled de Malmanche, 17 Sona Taumalolo, 18 Isaac Ross, 19 Sam Cane, 20 Tawera Kerr-Barlow, 21 Tim Nanai-Williams, 22 Jackson Willison.

@poppa69(poppa69)-2: If Mc Caw is back, what happens to Matt Todd. Bench? I am really loving Matt Todd on the pitch.

Well the Cheetahs have had the Saders number in the past but this year i think there is a clear class distinction …. saders by 20

@rossoneri(rossoneri)-7: Todd has been playing very well – with a mentor like McCaw he is being taught by the best – should be a future Ab if he continues

Talking to reporters from Auckland, where the Stormers are based until they go through to Hamilton on Friday,

@stew(stew)-9: What I love most about him, is that he doesn’t give away penalties. The refs don’t bother with him, Richie get’s harrased by the Refs all the time.

@rossoneri(rossoneri)-7: hi Rossi, he is a wonderful prospect and has really stood up in the absence of McCaw, so much so Ritchie hasnt been missed too much…

The team that wins this year’s Tri-Nations will find it hard to peak again at the World Cup which starts just three weeks after the southern hemisphere tournament’s conclusion, South Africa captain John Smit said.

We may see Tood during the game, come on to play openside and McCaw to blindside. Fruen on the wing? Not sure why they would break up the form centre combo of S15, but I guess after last weeks performance, they can afford to do whatever, just thought Ward to fullback and Marshall to wing was a better set up.

Never heard of this Luke Romano before but he very impressive. Another off the production line.

  • 18.poppa69: Reply to this comment

@CSI:Rugby(CSI:Rugby)-17: have been watching Romano the last few weeks, still very raw at this level but does look to have the goods… still early days though..

I would like to see the McCaw at 6, Todd at 7 and read at 8 to see how they combine… said it a week or two ago on here actually..

As a Cheetahs supporter, it is great being the underdog in this match with nothing to lose! I am extremely jealous of the Saders’ depth. Bringing in a qaulity centre like Crotty and having such a starting line-up with all their injuries, while the Cheetahs had to dig deep with all theirs!! At least they are not starting their physio/fitness coach!!

The Saders’ “baked bean” (#9) will be getting a lot of attention in order to prevent quick/good ball to their backline!!

@justrugby(justrugby)-3: it won’t be such an upset, the cheetahs beat the crusaders as recently as 2009.

    ‘piece of advice’ ?

so sacrifice 1 for the other ?

1 day Safas will wake up, Bill wont be there any longer, and they might just realise that its not ALL and ONLY about the RWC

    might

  • 32.Nils: Reply to this comment

Potential banana skin – in theory Crusaders should dispatch them with ease and usually do, in reality, they have lost there before even without current injury plague.

    Nevermind, Crusaders by 10+.

@Sasuke(Sasuke)-27: Jip, apparently just a niggle, but Geel will start

  • 34.Sasuke: Reply to this comment

@Black Panther(Black Panther)-31: In a World Cup year yes i will sacrifice the Tri-Nations for the World Cup. Where will Bill be?? In our trophy cabinet thats where!

One day the RWC will be extremely competitive and there will be about 10 teams who can realistically win the thing(not three like is the case now). Then where will NZ be?? Sitting there with there Millionth Tri-Nations trophy and 0 Rwc trophies. Shame.

Also the Tri-Nations is always there to win every year…why dont you guys give it a rest this year and see if you guys might win the World Cup.

    Might.

instead of just crowing LIKE they do.

    might.

there hasnt been a Series in SA since.

in NZ, SA has missed opportunities to win a Series in 1956, 1965, 1981, 1994, 2008* and 2010*.

Unbelievable rugby experience & treated with much hospitality by your countrymen. Would love to see the return of those days
