Saturday’s big schoolboy match between Grey College and Affies in Bloemfontein has been called off because of heavy rain.
Grey College head of rugby Dries van der Wal confirmed the news on Friday morning, adding that all 28 teams won’t be able to play on the water-logged fields.
‘This match was definitely a big one and everybody was excited heading into the weekend,’ Van der Wal told keo.co.za. ‘But we’ve had some terrible, terrible rain here in Bloem and we’ve been forced to call the match off as the fields are underwater.
‘We will try to find an alternative date, but I doubt it will happen because it’s very difficult to accommodate an extra date during a busy season. But if both schools can, it will happen.’
This fixture was an important one on the schools calendar as Affies and Grey College are currently ranked No 1 and 2 on the FNB Top 20 rankings respectively. Word is that the match will be moved to 16 June, but this is yet to be confirmed.
After unbeaten runs in 2008 and 2010, Grey were expected to struggle this season but managed 9 wins and 1 draw from their 10 games. A win over Affies would see the Bloemfontein-based school regain the No 1 spot on the standings. They will still face Paarl Boys’, Grey High (PE), Glenwood and Paul Roos later this year.
