The Pampas XV beat the Blue Bulls 14-9 in the Vodacom Cup final in Potchefstroom on Friday night.
A try from inside centre Agustin Gosio and a penalty from flyhalf Nicolas Sanchez was enough to claim an 8-0 lead at the break as the Bulls displayed a flat performance in the first stanza. Sanchez and replacement pivot Santiago Iglesias extended their team’s tally to 14 soon after the restart.
The Bulls could only manage six points up to the third quarter through Marnitz Boshoff’s boot before the flyhalf slotted his third penalty in the 77th minute to put his team within reach of victory at the death. But there was no fairy-tale ending as the defending champions produced a tired finish to the match and the Pampas XV managed to hold on.
The Argentinians are deserved champions as they enjoyed an unbeaten run to the 2011 Vodacom Cup title, beating teams like the Lions, Leopards and Cheetahs on route to the final. The victory in the tournament decider was the Pampas XV’s second win over the Bulls as they downed the men from Pretoria in March.
