SA latest – Brussow breaks down again

Keo.co.za brings you news from South Africa’s Super Rugby franchises.

Brussow breaks down again – Cheetahs flank Heinrich Brussow will be sidelined for three to four weeks with a hamstring injury.

Brussow left the field during Saturday’s clash with the Crusaders and it was confirmed at half-time that he had pulled a hamstring. The latest news from Bloemfontein is that he will be sidelined for the better part of a month.

Lock Walti Vermeulen sustained a concussion in Saturday’s match and won’t be available for the game against the Rebels.

Rassie quashes Pienaar rumours - Rassie Erasmus says Ruan Pienaar will not be available to the Stormers this season.

Sport24 confirmed this with Erasmus over the weekend, following rumours that the former Sharks utility back will join a South African Super Rugby franchise to prepare him for the Springboks’ Tri-Nations and World Cup campaigns. Pienaar’s club Ulster were knocked out from the Celtic League play-offs over the weekend, making him available.

The deal was believed to be 50-50 according to Western Province vice-president Thelo Wakefield.

‘I haven’t heard any confirmation from the [Western Province] MD or president at this stage, so I can’t say whether Pienaar is coming or not. I also spoke to [Springbok head coach] Peter de Villiers last night and he didn’t mention anything, but I think there will be clarity later this week. Right now, it’s still a rumour,’ Wakefield told keo.co.za on Sunday.

‘If Pienaar does come on board, it will be difficult because we have Peter Grant, Lionel Cronje and Kurt Coleman in the flyhalf department and Ricky Januarie and Dewaldt Duvenage as our two scrumhalves. I’m not sure what we’re going to do with four flyhalves. But Pienaar is a quality player and if the move does happen, he will be welcomed.’

Fourie concern for Stormers – Jaque Fourie may miss the Stormers’ clash with the Blues this Friday because of a hip injury.

Fourie picked up the injury following the Stormers’ defeat against the Chiefs last weekend. The player went for scans on Sunday and the immediate results indicate that he’s likely to be sidelined.

Head coach Allister Coetzee said he may have to call in backline cover. Juan de Jongh is expected to replace Fourie at outside centre if needed.
