SA latest – Cronje crocked

Keo.co.za brings you news from South Africa’s Super Rugby franchises.

Cronje crocked – Lionel Cronje will return to South Africa after picking up a serious knee injury in the Stormers’ clash with the Blues.

The Stormers’ flyhalf went down with a medial ligament injury in the 23rd minute of Friday’s game, and was replaced by regular scrumhalf Dewald Duvenage. The extent of Cronje’s injury is yet to be determined, but coach Allister Coetzee told keo.co.za that the young flyhalf won’t play any further part on the Stormers’ Australasian tour.

The Stormers will announce their replacement for Cronje in the next 48 hours. Gary van Aswegen is already out for the season with a knee injury, and Peter Grant has been sidelined with an ankle problem. Grant is expected to be back before the next game against the Brumbies, but the Stormers are likely to fly in somebody like Kurt Coleman as cover.

Tough luck. But, boy, does he kick like a jackass! Really needs to sort that out.

Another test of the Stormers’ depth, which is proving something of a revelation.

Who thought Duvenage could play flyhalf. There surely is talent in this team.

    Pienaar for back-up flyhalf perhaps?

Boland’s Elgar Watts is another possibility – played in some of the warm-up games earlier in the season

Just leave Duvenhage as backup flyhalf! He did a sterling job when he came on and all stormers tries were scored with him there…. brave I know but surely an option?

Suddenly Pienaar would be more than welcome in Stormer land. I would start him ahead of Grant – if he was willing to play flyhalf of course.

Coleman looked composed and controlled when I saw him [ just for a couple of minutes ]…

    Trust the youth…

lionel is a great player .cant understand why he was told to take a penalty straight after his knee was strapped and was looking really uncomfortable .this guy definately gets the backline going . .. we saw that against the sharks and crusaders . . .he also has a huge boot when kickin out of hand which gets his forwards going forward unlike grant who doesnt get much distance..its a pity that now that his confidence was growing that he had to get injured .hope to see him back soo

Lionel also has a tendency to stand much shallower than Grant, making it easier to get over the advantage line.

Funny – just a few days ago the Stomers top brass proclaimed they have no need for Ruan P as they have a truckload of flyhalfs. Now all of a sudden it is panick stations with top 3 choices all out injured. Looks like Dewaldt is the new FH for rest of season! Not a bad combo with Dewaldt and Ricky varknek running the show. Whatever Ricky slows down at 9 Dewaldt will speed up at 10.

Oh, and congrats to Juan DeJ – you are the fire that lites up this Stomers side.

Does this even matter? A scrumhalf did a better job than him. Had he stayed on the Stormers would have lost, awful player.

All four Stormers flyhalves have impressed me to some extent this year. More of a concern to me is what management do with Sadie once the old midfield pair return. As I said after the Crusaders game he is a special player with time on his hands and great running lines. He reminds me a bit or Marius Joubert 2006 in NZ. Habana needs to be dropped to create the opening. He is rushed off his feet and has shown nothing in 11 games compared to what Sadie has done in 1.5 games. Well played boys!

    @Olivergm(Olivergm)-14:

Jantjes to be dropped to make way for him. He has given away 3 tries in 2 games from his poor decision making and offers nothing in counter attack.

Aplon to move back to fullback, Sadie to 14.

i see AC now saying he is willing to find a 10 from outside the Stormers team and squad,Perhaps Ruan Pienaar deal may be resuscitated?

Lionel Cronje is a class act….next year he may be stormers trump card at 15….with Gary van aswegen and Grant at 10

lionel showed yesterday that he is a 15. his moments came when in broken play when attacking from the deep cover position.

considering the stormers cant play their old hands from 10-15 they will line up

    10 gary
    12 JdeJ
    13 sadie
    poolman
    aplon
    cronje.

depth is there for the future
