The Blitzboks will face Australia in the Cup quarter-final of London leg of the Sevens World Series after defeat to Fiji in their final pool match.
The South Africans had played poorly throughout day one, and deservedly lost to the islanders, who scored two first half tries and held on for victory.
The Blitzboks had set up the pool decider with Fiji by beating Portugal 22-7 in their second match of the day. Branco du Preez and Frankie Horne scored first half tries, while Neil Powell opened the second with a five pointer. Du Preez later grabbed his brace.
Earlier they recorded a comfortable 17-7 victory in their first pool match against Russia. Bernardo Botha scored within 51 seconds, but Russia lead 7-5 at the break.
However, coach Paul Treu’s men secured the win with second half tries by Steven Hunt and Johannes Prinsloo.
