Ailing Joost returns home

Former Springbok captain Joost van der Westhuizen is out of hospital following tests to verify a motor neurone disease.

Van der Westhuizen’s doctor, Jody Pearl, said in a statement that while the diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease is unfortunately a possibility, it is not confirmed.

‘Joost has been discharged from hospital following multiple investigations and is currently on a trial of therapy with his condition being regularly reassessed,’ said Pearl. ‘We are doing everything within our power based on global best practice to rapidly establish Joost’s diagnosis, and to offer him the best possible therapy.

‘I am pleased to report that he is stable and in good spirits,’ added Pearl.

cane is my ultimate hero on this blogosphere thingymajiggy, if ever there were a blogger who deserves numero uno blogging status here on this board Mr. Cane is it.

As re desertfaffa’s input he has a definitive good point also regarding P’s and Q’s and all things rugby related …. So how or where to draw the line , a sterile chip and putt la di da atmosphere or else give a little take a little but always call a spade a spade.

Bookmakers believe the All Blacks will win the Tri-Nations but remain even more confident about their World Cup chances.

The TAB released its betting option for this year’s Tri-Nations today, perching New Zealand as strong favourites to defend their title at $1.90. South Africa are paying $3 and Australia $4.

“The prices reflect the relative depths of talent for each team,” TAB rugby bookie Mark Stafford said.

“While some believe that Australia should be second favourites, they are not blessed with the depth of the other two.

“From here on in we will be keeping a close eye on injuries and expected return dates of key players.”

Stafford believed the outcome of the Tri-Nations would hinge on a clash in Port Elizabeth on August 20.

“The key game of the tournament for me, as it is every year, is the All Blacks’ match in South Africa. If New Zealand win that, they’ll win the Tri-Nations”

Stafford’s team feel even more sure that the All Blacks will break their World Cup duck when that tournament begins three weeks later.

That market has been open for several months and New Zealand have come down to $1.70 to win.

Australia are rated second-favourites at $5, followed by South Africa ($6), England ($9) and France ($15).

I must say, and don’t take this as bad sportsmanship or anything, but firstly:

What will Kearney add that we do not already have? Fitting into a team setup, moves, calls and mode of play at this late stage of the comp doesn’t make sense, and,

secondly, why would we be interrested in assisting a team that we will in all likelyhood meet in the quarter finals, giving him valuable insight into moves, calls, playing strengths and weaknesses of players that will play a big part in the WC campaign?

  • 61.ashampoopaloo: Reply to this comment

Bad idea to bring Kearney here it don’t help Stormers one little bit all it does is aid Ireland but it don’t do our campaign any favors at all and even less for our tight knit team camaraderie

If it is he has a seriously switched on agent. Hopfully it all goes away and he is declared 100% disease free.

You all having a go at Great White Shark for saying this ?? He was not running Joost down just mentioning a possibility, not a nice one, but think Shabir Sheik (sp) , dont think he would be so stupid as to pull this kind of stunt though because it would be unforgivable.

Who in their dilly minds would try fake a life threatening disease for publicity stunt?

BTW who’s Shabir Shakey Shake Shake …. sounds like another one of these over aggrandized dumb sharkievarkie frauds lurking about the shallow waters.

I’ve just read on news 24 that the doc who initially diagnosed him has given him 3 years to live. That’s quite a shocker.

Let’s hope he’s wrong. Good luck fella.

Shut it putu lips. The foulest mouth with the most disgusting and controversial slant on life should rather sit down and behave like a good little racist.

    @Stormersboy(stormersboy)-69:

You kinda have already written the oke off bru.

All he could say was that “I might only have three years left…”
When asked about motor neuron disease, Joost says: “It’s a disease they don’t know much of. My condition has not been caused by stress and definitely not due to a hectic social life. It’s my nervous system disintegrating.

He has since visited Dr Jody Pearl – a neurologist from Johannesburg – to get a second opinion. She has discharged him from hospital, but is still waiting for a final diagnosis.

  • 71.Great White Shark: Reply to this comment

“But, I will fight this thing. Even if it’s the last thing I do.”

Joost said this so don’t shoot the messenger but I did laugh.

  • 72.Stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@Great White Shark(Predawn)-70: I haven’t written anyone off, I was referring to the part of the article (which you conveniently left out) where it quotes

“The doctor who examined him, have given him three years to live. ” (sic)

i know he’s gotten a second diagnosis, and as I said, i hope he’s wrong.

I don’t wish the worst on Joost or anyone else for that matter. But Joost has led a charmed life recently and when one does that, there will always be skeptics out there and who can blame them. GWS did over-react but then that’s the nature of the site. Skop, as much as I admire your rugby stance and knowledge, I do think this is a case of the size 50 potjie calling the little kettle black. ;)

I wasn’t a huge fan of Joost the player, as I’ve posted here before, and certainly wasn’t fond of the cr@p he pulled in the public eye. But when you come down to it he, .like us all, is more than just that, he’s a dad, a son and a brother.

I wish him all the strength with his journey. All the best to his family who will be supporting him through this too.
