SA latest – Bulls lose Bakkies

Keo.co.za brings you news from South Africa’s Super Rugby franchises.

Bulls lose Bakkies – Bulls hard man Bakkies Botha won’t play at Newlands after failing to complete Tuesday’s training session.

Botha pulled up during a defence drill, and there is a possibility he could be out for next week’s crucial match against the Sharks as well. Danie Rossouw is likely to take his place in the second row, with Dewald Potgieter filling the void he leaves at blindside flank.

There was more disappointing news for the Bulls, with Fourie du Preez deemed unfit to play. The gifted scrumhalf said he felt ready, the Bulls’ medical team aren’t prepared to risk him.

Stormers’ Bok prop crocked – CJ van der Linde is battling a groin injury and won’t be available until the Super Rugby play-offs.

The Stormers’ management told keo.co.za on Tuesday that Van der Linde has been carrying an injury, and that playing further may aggravate it to the point where it becomes serious. As a result, Van der Linde has been placed on a rehabilitation programme and won’t feature in the last two league games.

The good news for the Stormers is that Peter Grant and Dewaldt Duvenage trained on Tuesday. At this stage, the Stormers aren’t willing to confirm whether the pair will be available to start, as further tests need to be completed before they are declared fit.

Bray disappointed in bumbling Saffas - Sanzar referee boss Lyndon Bray has condemned Craig Joubert and Pro Legoete’s decision making in sending off Waratahs lock Pat O’Connor at the weekend.

The incident came at a time when the Tahs were pushing hard for a critical victory over the Bulls.

Joubert red carded O’Connor on Legoeta’s recommendation. However O’Connor was cleared of wrongdoing by a Sanzar disciplinary panel on Monday, after no evidence of the offence he was accused of.

Bray told The Australian newspaper: ‘We reviewed the game on Monday night and clearly the decision was wrong. There are two aspects which are frustrating. The description of the event was not very accurate. The process between the referee and the assistant referee was not good. It never fleshed out the details of the incident.

‘I’ve spoken to Craig Joubert about how he could have handled it better, to get better information on which to base his decision. Craig was very disappointed he ended up with that decision. Referees are prone to make mistakes all the time,’ Bray added. ‘What we don’t want is a mistake to be compounded by a process that is not good.

‘An experienced referee’s job is to pick up on messages he is getting. When Pro said no to a red card, clearly there was a message in that.
It’s difficult in the heat of the moment. Craig believed he was dealing with a headbutt. If they had talked through what happened, maybe they would have come up with a different outcome.’

Reports suggest Legoete is in danger of being dropped from the Sanzar panel altogether, while Joubert was cautioned for the red card incident.

Viljoen off to Italy – Shortly after announcing the signing of Griquas flyhalf Naas Olivier, Aironi have confirmed the recruitment of Cheetahs flanker Frans Viljoen.

It will be Viljoen’s second stint in Europe after featuring for Stade Francais five years ago. The deal will see him in Italy for the next two years.

    Go stormers!!!!

As long as Grant isn’t rushed in.

CJ you could leave out, frankly I’m of the opinion that we’re better off without him.

My greatest nightmare: Coleman starts but gets injured …….. the sight of Earl the Pearl running onto the field in a Stormers jersey against the Bulls will be enough to give me a stroke!

@stormersboy(stormersboy)-3: Agreed. Brock’s been solid for a long time now. Very underrated IMO. And we all know that Wicus has Werner Kruger’s nr. This will be the 4th time he will embarress the so called “next Springbok tighthead”

@Blokkies(Blokkies)-4: Mine too!! I was gutted when he came on last week and even more when he kicked a conversion !! Now it will forever be on his record that he scored points for us !!! TWat

This game will be decided in the forwards as usual. Whoever wins the collisions and secures the best ball will come out on top, The Bulls will favour their inside backs and the Stormers their outside backs. No doubt the Bulls will try and emulate the Reds successful kicking game, but the Stormers should be wise to it by now. Conrad may have lost his attacking edge but he remains the safest hands in the country at 15, with a monster boot as well. I expect FdP to be a bit rusty after his break – he usually is. Morne is back in fine form though. I am certainly relishing the prospect of an excellent game. Confidence in both sides will be high going into this one.

Lol, to be fair to Earl he did not do anything wrong during the 15 minutes on the field except missing the last conversion – his distribution was very good in fact.

I wonder what you will say if he win the game against the Bulls for us with a drop in the last minute :)

  • 9.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@Old School(Old School)-5: Ja, I think his game has come on nicely in the last couple of seasons. He’s not a total powerhouse but he’s partly responsible for the more stable scrum we’ve had the last while.

You’d have to think the chances of Coleman picking up an injury are at their highest.

Desperate Bulls will look at every option and piling loads of physicality towards the 10 channel seems obvious.

Earl Rose put in one good segment of play, history tells us he is due for a bad one now. I hope otherwise.

  • 11.Caper: Reply to this comment

I’m not gonna get my hopes up, because it’s been a few times that Peter Grant has had a 95% of playing, but then it’s confirmed on the Friday before the game that he won’t play. Don’t bluff us, AC.

How will Grant fair in a teritorial kicking game?

    “popgun boot”

    ?

  • 13.Old School: Reply to this comment

@Mr Black(Mr Black)-12: That may be an issue, but I feel that when playing the Bulls that is one area of the game(tactical kicking) where you should not try and match them. Keep ball in hand and patiently break them down. We have the muscle up front to dominate the breakdown and collisions

  • 14.Mr Black: Reply to this comment

    @Old School(Old School)-13:

I understand that rain is expected. This will make it even more difficult to win field dominance with ball in hand.

@Mr Black(Mr Black)-14: Really? Thought I read earlier in one of these Keo articles that a sunny day is expected. In that case I would much rather prefer Grant to Coleman. We are also gonna need Dewaldt for his boot

Current forecast for Saturday’s match is as follows:

Moderately overcast, 19 degrees Celsius, light breeze Southeaster (15km/h), no rain.

There will be sustained rain for most of Wednesday and early Thursday, but the pitch should be fully dry by the time the match starts.

    @poppa69(poppa69)-35: Ooh, that smarts.

    Right back at you:

    Ma’a Nonu to leave Hurricanes

Ma’a Nonu will leave the Hurricanes at the end of the Super Rugby season in the first big move of new coach Mark Hammett’s tenure.

The All Blacks midfielder was told yesterday he will not be offered a 10th season at the franchise.

The Chiefs are understood to be the frontrunners to secure the 29-year-old’s service for 2012 and new coach Dave Rennie is also believed to be chasing the signature of at least one other big name in Wellington rugby.

Hurricanes chief executive James Te Puni and coach Hammett were unavailable for comment last night, but the decision will be made official today.

Hammett has shed arguably the Hurricanes’ biggest drawcard in terms of both bums on seats and sponsorship appeal at a time when there are dwindling crowds at Westpac Stadium.

And many fans will be asking why a player with 104 Super Rugby caps, a Wellington representative since 2002 and a Rongotai College old boy has effectively been shown the door in the prime of his career.

But it appears Nonu’s ill-discipline on the field – he is one of Super Rugby’s most penalised and yellow carded players – was a driver for the decision not to offer him another contract.

Hammett took Nonu aside for a chat about standards following his early season yellow card against the Highlanders and his standards at training, but the pair have appeared to get along well throughout the rest of the campaign.

Nonu is believed to be extremely disappointed that he is no longer wanted in his home town.

Although his form was poor during the first half of the season he has been at his game breaking best in recent weeks and is building well towards the World Cup.

Wing Hosea Gear is believed to be close to re-signing but the respective futures of halfback Piri Weepu and fullback Cory Jane remain uncertain. Jane, who was set to take up a contract in Japan but pulled out after the earthquake and tsunami, would be a logical replacement for Chiefs fullback Mils Muliaina (Japan).

Captain Andrew Hore is said to have been told to find a new franchise.

there you go exactly as I pronounced at the immediate moment of madness. Pro Legoete and Craig Joubert cost Waratahs and promoted Bulls at a critically crunch time in the game and entire competition which gave Bulls at least 6 and perhaps 10 point swing advantage. Had that ridiculous head butt call not been made Bulls would have lost and probably out the competition. Now they got everything to play for with tails up, and contrary to what keohane has predicted the momentum is actually with Bulls for Saturday not with Stormers. I got grave fears Burger in his headless chicken vokmavoort anxiety gonna vokmavoort our hopes into oblivion once again.

We need a captain with some smarts for Saturday to settle it down, work it out and grind out a win, Van Zyl of JdV, not a f’ng robotic neanderthal on steroids marauding into mayhem madness like a lunatic on valium.

Let’s guess… if the Stormer’s win… and Schalk is not only the captain but form flanker again… it will be because Matfield and FDP were ‘in his deluded old mind’ the reason… and if the Bulls pull-off and up-set… it will solely be down to Schalk Burger…

Typical traits of an aging, disgruntled and deluded bakkie-bouer… not the brightest of fellows!
