MARK KEOHANE, in Business Day Newspaper, writes the Boks gained more the battle in Nelspruit. Rather a scrap than a sensational effort against a courageous but limited Scotland. The Springbok coaching staff gained more because of the struggle against Scotland and there certainly won’t be complacency against Samoa. South African rugby supporters tend to be reactionary and very different in their reactions every weekend. When New Zealand struggled to beat France in the first Test in Auckland and South Africa were brilliant in patches against Italy many on social networks expressed confidence ... The Bulls are South Africa's best team and they proved it in Bloemfontein. The Cheetahs have been outstanding all season and they were as good on Saturday night as they have been at any stage. Still it wasn't good enough to beat the Bulls, who won 30-25 after leading 30-13 with 10 minutes to play. The Cheetahs finished brilliantly and deserved the bonus point, but the Bulls consolidated their top two league placing thanks to an imposing first hour. Pierre Spies was impressive as team and pack leader, Arno Botha was ever present and the No 9, 10, 12 Bulls axis of Francois Hougaard, Morne ... Read Article11 Jun 2013
Brendan Venter's appointment as Sharks Director of Rugby is a good one. But the decision to end John Plumtree's Sharks coaching tenure is not. Former Springbok and Italy coach Nick Mallett turned down an invitation for the role of Sharks Director of Rugby and Venter, formerly the head coach and Director of Rugby at Saracens, will start his job at the outset of the Currie Cup season. Plumtree remains the Super Rugby head coach until the end of this season's tournament but his contract has not been renewed. Plumtree is highly rated in Europe and will in all likelihood link up with a European ... Read Article8 Jun 2013
Rene Ranger was among the few highlights in New Zealand's 23-13 win against France in Auckland. The All Blacks led 17-10 at half time but France dominated field position for most of the match and enjoyed the greater quality in possession. However they couldn't translate the advantage in the set phase and at the breakdown into points. New Zealand defended well in a match of poor quality. France lead early through Wesley Fofana's try and it took Ben Smith's break to start up New Zealand's international season. Smith has been the form New Zealand back in Super Rugby and he looked a class ... Read Article27 May 2013
Kiwi Vern Cotter is Scotland's new head coach. Cotter will only take up the position in a year's time. He will see out his contact with French club Clermont. Cotter's appointment means that New Zealanders will coach Scotland, Ireland (Joe Schmidt) and Wales (Warren Gatland). New Zealander Robbie Deans has been at the helm of Australia for the last five years and current Blues coach John Kirwan coached Italy and Japan. Kiwi coaches have also been at the helm of Samoa and Fiji in recent years. Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article8 Jun 2011

No doubt sadie is a talent, was beyond impressed with the way he played against the blues and crusaders, next to de jongh the stormers have another class center pairing to do they the hard yards for the next 5 years after jdv and fourie, in 3 years or so we will have awesome bol centers in Jdj Sadie Robert dippenaar whitehead hollenbach riaan swanepoel those are just a few and hell throw lambie into the mix why not, world cup 2015 is looking good already, and about johnston screw the critisim of his conditioning, look at the French first center who played for the Baa baa’s on the weekend as well as the winger for Toulouse, both are over weight fat pigs for backline players and yet NH coaches don’t complain and those two turned in good performances, so johnston keep the lol beer belly man, don’t change what Ain’t broken, he’s one of the best players in sa and let’s keep it that way
8 Jun 2011, 07:45 am
Johnson is in better condition than Alberts.
8 Jun 2011, 07:49 am
@seabiscuit(seabiscuit)-1: spot on.
Where are the guys that were saying Sadie X-factor how can you tell?
8 Jun 2011, 07:50 am
Naught champ I’ve chatted with alberts befor he is built like a brick **** house trust me
8 Jun 2011, 08:16 am
Damn.
This Keo TV slows everything down and HM Keo looks plain scarey.
8 Jun 2011, 08:21 am
PS Ryan. the 80′s called. They want their jacket back.
Yes I’m still on the old email. Feel free to mail me personally to kuk me out about that comment.
8 Jun 2011, 08:27 am
At least the spelling and grammar ain’t too bad on Keo TV.
8 Jun 2011, 08:40 am
Keo, as much as I’ve always like Johan Sadie – it’s way too premature to make a call like that now.
Let’s see him in the Currie Cup, if he sustains his magic, then by all means.
But not now.
8 Jun 2011, 08:44 am
Problem is who do you leave out? How many players go to the World Cup? In the past it was 30 but I believe the limit this year is going to be 28?? If that’s the case you’d think one of the Beast or Steenkamp would have to stay home, and only 5 loose-forwards would go? It’s gonna be more a case of who stays at home then who goes… which means no bolters because good solid players who have established themselves won’t be left at home ahead of them.
8 Jun 2011, 08:55 am
And if I had to pick a bolter it would be Nick Koster (he can play on the wing as well, and finds space the way you would expect from Schalk Brits). Also I think you’d find that Willem Alberts is statistically one of the top loose-forwards in the competition. He’s run for almost 900m so far in the competition and averages around 7metres per run? Not sure if we have any stronger ball carrier, or as efficient.
8 Jun 2011, 09:03 am
We already have a bolter. His name is Juan De Jong.
8 Jun 2011, 09:13 am
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-11: How can he be a bolter when he´s already firmly established within the squad??? Duh.
Obviously we´re looking at new guys here who are impressing – De Jongh was a new guy last year. He´s now an experienced and farkin good Bok.
8 Jun 2011, 09:18 am
@Slumtown(Slumtown)-12: I know boet. That was an ironic post. I was referring to the fact that he can’t get a regular first team game as his “bolter” satus.
Try and keep up.
8 Jun 2011, 09:27 am
Let me tell you I agree here with both Mark and Ryan – unfortunately the powers that be will stick to the older heads.. so expect to see Habana, Adi Jacobs, Frans Steyn, and possibly Ricky Januarie. Only thing thats going to shake it up could be injuries at the end part of the Super Rugby tournament, in the Tri Nations or in the World Cup itself. Guys I fear wont make it to the World Cup and he most certainly deserve to have a crack:
1 Coenie
2 Deon Fourie & or Schalk Brits
3 Brian Mujati
6 Francois Louw
7 Ashley Johnson
8 Joshua Strauss
8 Duane Vermeulen
9 Sarel Pretorius
10 Sias Ebersohn
10 Pat Lambie
11 Mvovo
12 Johann Sadie
15 Riaan Viljoen/ Jaco Taute
I believe Basson will go along with Houghaard, possibly Lambie
I reckon this will be the squad:
1 Gurthro
1 Beast
2 Smit
2 Bismarck
3 Jannie du Plessis
3 CJ van der Linde
4 Bakkies
4 Danie Rossouw
5 Matfield
5 Becker
6 Brussouw
6 Schalk Burger
7 Juan Smith
7 Willem Alberts
8 Spies
8 Kankowski
9 Fourie du Preez
9 Ricky Januarie/ Francois Houghaard
10 Morne Steyn
10 Butch James / Lambie
11 Habana
11 Basson
12 Jean de Villiers
12 Juan de Jongh
13 Jacques Fourie
13 Adi Jacobs
14 Jp Pietersen
14 Gio Aplon
15 Frans Steyn
15 Ruaan Pienaar.
Either way there are a lot of talented people who wont be going.
1 Coenie
1 Dean Greyling
2 Deon Fourie
2 Schalk Brits
2 Tiaan Liebenberg
3 Eugene van Staden
3 BJ Botha
4 Rynhardt Elstadt
4 Flip vd Merwe
5 Anton van Zyl
6 Keegan Daniel
6 Jean Deysel
7 Dewaldt Potgieter
7 Ashley Johnson
8 Joshua Strauss
8 Duane Vermeulen
9 Sarel Pretorius
9 Charl McCleod
9 Dewaldt Duvenhage
10 Peter Grant
10 Sias Ebersohn
10 Possibly Lambie
10 Elton Jantjes (not ready anyway)
11 Mvovo
12 Doppies la Grange
12 Johann Sadie
13 Robert Ebersohn
15 Jaco Taute
15 Zane Kirchner
15 Riaan Viljoen
8 Jun 2011, 09:28 am
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-13: okkkayyy … not suyrprising he cant get a start with Fourie and de Villiers ahead of him though.
8 Jun 2011, 09:34 am
If we’re picking backline bolters, then surely Jaco Taute is ahead of Johan “2 Games” Sadie. Just saying.
8 Jun 2011, 09:40 am
@>^..^< katman(katman)-16:
Fully agree.
8 Jun 2011, 09:42 am
every so often a player comes along and he just looks like he has been there all his life. Sadie, for me, is that player. He was awesome at u21 level and the manne in which he has slotted in when given such limited chances with Stormers has confirmed my view that the kid has something very special. I thought his performance against the Blues was very good and his composure, when playing wing, against Saders also showed a lot about his temperament.
I rate Taute, but when I talk bolter I talk about an exceptional talent and Sadie is this talent.
8 Jun 2011, 09:51 am
@keo(keo)-18: Jeez keo, given the Cape Town context, “the manne in which he has slotted in” is a pretty bad Freudian slip.
And, at only 21, Jaco Taute has had two very impressive seasons in a struggling team. Even if you only look at this year’s Super 15, he’s done far more than Sadie (who looks to be one for the future) to warrant a Bok look-in. By this I mean all-round contribution, not just a handful of sniping runs.
8 Jun 2011, 09:52 am
jeez man….ashley johnson must annoy the hell out of the opposition.
whenever he scores a try, the opposition spend twice as long as the usually do under the poles for the simple reason….they are still waiting for his arse to arrive and cross the line. And only then….can the kicker start lining up.
hell, last week against the sharks…..I’m sure I saw bismark taking a call from someone on a cell.
8 Jun 2011, 09:59 am
@keo(keo)-18:
Agree I posted on here 2 years ago that he is a special talent, also mentioned that with the depth of centres at the Stormers /Province set up, that the Sharks with their centre woes should of approached him.
Glad they did not !!!
Again we will really only know how good he is once he has played a full S15 and the opposition have had time to work him out, I think he will survive the acid test and go on to become a superstar !!
8 Jun 2011, 11:01 am
@keo(keo)-18: I don’t agree. You guys posted the last few weeks that Ashley J was done an injustice by forcing him into the Bok team too quickly.
So, do you want Sadie to go the same route as Bosman and Rose?
Rather have him compete in the CC first. He’s only played in a strong team with momentum, so he has to experience playing in a depleted WP team first.
With the Bok team already settled for some time now, I’d be careful to take away a spot from the small squad allowed for the World Cup, for a ‘Wild Card’. It may upset the team dynamic.
8 Jun 2011, 11:07 am
@keo(keo)-18:
Surely he’b be better served staying at home and working on his conditioning, coz carrying tackle bags in the Springbok camp will do nothing for his confidence or develpment, as has been written on this site about other players with potential, or is that reserved for certain players?
8 Jun 2011, 11:39 am
Is it weird for me to say that I get excited to see Sadie playing at centre?
Some really great prospects in midfield for years to come:-
17-18 yrs: Jordaan, Small-Smith, Mbovane
19-21 yrs: Sadie, Venter, Moolman, Lane
2015 Bok Backline (assuming these guys are nutured and grow)
9. Hougaard / Rademan / Duvenage
10. Lambie / Goosen / Jantjies
11. Engelbrecht / Basson
12. De Jongh / R. Ebersohn / Venter / Jordaan
13. Sadie / Small-Smith / Moolman
14. Van der Heerver / Mvovo / Mjekevu
15. Taute / Cronje
8 Jun 2011, 11:55 am
@Gambit25(Gambit25)-24: I can’t wait for Goosen to start playing senior rugby!! That guy is everything everyone expected from Frans Steyn as a no10 (which didn’t quite work out for Steyn) and better! Wow! Can he kick!
8 Jun 2011, 12:11 pm
@Bouts(Bouts)-25: Yeah… Another special player!
But thats what we seem to breed here in SA, alot of young special talents… Its up to coaching and management to nurture and grow these exeptional talents into world number 1′s in their respective positions!
I see guys like Frans Steyn, Lionel Cronje and Ruan Pienaar to an extent and it sucks that we let such special players lose their brilliance!
But then again… its all the extra special players that step over any obstacles and find their way back to the top!
I look forward to the coming years of SA rugby as long as SARU administrators don’t stuff things up…
8 Jun 2011, 12:46 pm
@Gambit25(Gambit25)-26:
I don’t see how Steyn, Cronje & Pienaar have ‘lost their brilliance’. Francois Steyn is a fullback out and out. He plays instinctively, and has a monster boot. His skill set is perfectly suited to fullback. He takes too many ‘risks’ to be playing at 10.
Ruan Pienaar is still an excellent player. He was never going to be able to continue making multiple linebreaks every game for his entire career. Players are ‘figured out’, get worn out, and lose that extra split second of speed needed to do that when they near the 30 mark. Fourie du Preez is the best 9 to ever play the game in my opinion because he overcomes that by being really really smart.
And Lionel Cronje… he is still a kid. He’s what, 22? He needs to mature. He’s been terrible playing S14 rugby. He played terribly against the Blues before going off injured (two of his mistakes resulting in 14 points for the Blues). I can only hope that he’s got the desire to be as good as he can be. Sometimes when play speeds up, and the guys running at you are bigger and stronger, the self confidence & determination isn’t always there.
8 Jun 2011, 13:02 pm
@Slumtown(Slumtown)-14:
Its not as simple as picking 2 players in position for 30 man squad. Its the right dynamic chosen
For instance:
-3 hookers
-3 scrumhalves
specialist positions where skillset is imperative.
-a loosefwd/lock utility fwd which reduces need for an extra lock or loosie
-a utility back who can cover 10/12/15-which reduces need for 2 extra wing cover
This involves these players:
-Danie Rossouw-4/5/6/7/8
-Frans Hougaard-9/11/13/14
-Ruan Pienaar-9/10/15
-Frans Steyn-12/15
Squad:
16 forwards
14 backs
1.Guthro/Beast
2.Smit/Bismark/Rallapelle
3.Jannie/CJ or Mujati
4.Bakkies/Rossouw
5.Bekker/Matfield
6.Brussow/Burger
7.Smith/Alberts
8.Spies
(No second 8 option needed as Alberts,Rossouw can play 8 as well)
9.Du Preez/Hougaard/Pienaar
10.Morne/Butch
11.Habana/Basson
12.De Villliers/de Jongh
13.Fourie/Jacobs
14.JP
15.Aplon/F.Steyn

@mshiniwami(mshiniwami)-28:
seems pretty much spot on for the RWC squad.
alot of players left at home that i think could form a v good RWC squad too, but we’ve seen SA think theyve had depth before only for their 2nd stringers to get plastered. I do think though that this is the strongest SA rugby has ever been since readmission.
As for Keo’s bolter on Sadie, i’d rather go with Rob Ebersohn.
8 Jun 2011, 14:03 pm
@Hendrik Pienaar(hendrikp)-27: Yeah… didn’t mean “lose their brilliance.” Shouldn’t have said that!
They were messed around and weren’t allowed to grow in their position. Right now, they aren’t the best in respective positions because of that and thats why I say we need to manage and look after the special talents. Pienaar and Steyn are good players but they are not the best in their positions because of how they were managed and I guess to some fault of their own as well.
Cronje has time to develop but he should’ve developed earlier considering he was the best u20 player 2 years ago when Lambie & Jantjies were in the same squad! This again is just a case for better management and nurturing for our players
8 Jun 2011, 14:22 pm
Both Sadie and Lionel are exceptional talents but both def need game time, but we gotta back both of em, Lionel runs brilliant lines and thinks brilliantly has a brain like larkham if u ask me, kicking will improve with time but he is a awesome prospect for the future, Sadie I’ve only seen in 2 games so he needs more time too, but he thinks well on his feet and runs hard lines, next to Jdj he looks really classy and I’m sure will come of age soon, as for Frans steyn he has to play 15 no matter wat he is too hot headed for 10, he has that cannon of a boot and every tram is gna hate kicking onto him as he’ll no doubt have a better return his size is also a factor and with aplon and mvovo next to him he’ll b able to carry it up n put hard runners like themselves into space, BOKKE!!!!!!!
8 Jun 2011, 14:25 pm
@Hendrik Pienaar(hendrikp)-27: Actually, I think Cronje’s mistake was to leave the FS, because Cheetah style of rugby suited him better. Defensive rugby isn’t for everyone.
8 Jun 2011, 15:26 pm
@mshiniwami(mshiniwami)-28: I think that’s the squad there, injuries and Div brainfarts permitting.
Unlucky fringe players are Johnson, Lambie, Vermeulen and Sarel Pretorius.
8 Jun 2011, 15:43 pm
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-11: NYCE
9 Jun 2011, 04:19 am
Taute…the guy remnds me of Reds fullback Latham.
Taute manged to draw two players, take both out of the play, unload the ball to the player in space and still stay on his feet in support. You cant teach that. He does need lesson on his brainfarts he gets sometimes when he drops the ball dead cold.
Another is Mbovane…and terror too.
Aaah the future looks bright.
Have your say
