  @puff(puff)-48: Bekker has historically never filled in well for Bakkies. Usually gets injured or easily nullified. To date has not made an impact, much like Olivier. Bismarck is not test class. Has zero BMT, has a very long list of yellow card, and penalties, poor hands, poor lineout throwing, mostly aimless or petulant. Smit is a substandard prop, end of story. Frans at 12 is perfect. Aplon is defensively our best 15 and offers much more than Frans. but Kirchner beat more defenders and made more breaks last year than the entire backline did in 09!! So Kirchner is by miles our best attacking 15!!

  I reckon you have well over a 1000 Smit posts. Now I know some of the keo members are slow but none are that slow.

  I think PDV isn’t only looking at the Brussow-Smith-Burger trio because Spies is out of form.
  I reckon he’s also looking at it because he obviously wants his captain to start in his preferred position.
  With Brussow there, we have the pilfering skills we need in the first half before Bismark comes on the field.
  Yes, it can be argued that Bismark is stronger and faster than Smit.
  But Smit is a great lineout thrower, knows his team mates and the game plan better than anyone else, knows how to handle pressure situations better than anyone else.
  Both Du Plessis bros are prone to bullying, getting penalised and partaking in nasty off the ball tactics that can get the Boks into trouble during a World Cup.
  Bismark’s discipline is a worry.
  I AM PRETTY CERTAIN SMIT WILL START AT HOOKER MORE OFTEN THAN NOT.

  @puff(puff)-54: Bismarck has amassed 3 turnovers since the start of the 2009 test season! Not a big threat at the breakdown at all!! Bismarck is a GUARANTEED penalty maching in high pressure situations. Save him for the minnows instead.

  I’m not disputing your stats and, in my mind, Kirchner has held his ground at test level.
  But I am confident if Aplon is given an extended run in the number 15 jersey, he will surpass Kirchner’s attacking stats without too much discomfort.
  Especially with Burger making tackles and Brussow stealing ball for quick recycle.

  Sexton turned that game – why – because of the platform the Leinster tight 5 were placing on the Northampton tight 5.

  Yes Grant, I saw the 1st half – mujati was off for 10 minutes and as I stated and so did the commentators how much impact Mujatis replacement had. There was even a tighthead and a penalty I think.

  Not saying he is cr@p, but I don’t think that he is a saviour.

  There are a few other players who have upped their games.
  Steenkamp’s scrummaging has improved.

  JDV getting back to his best.
  JP Pieterson hitting a purple patch.
  Daniesaurus…
  It all bodes well.

  The fact is 3 is a problematic position for the Boks, much like 13 was for the All Blacks after Umanga retired.
  But these things work in cycles.
  Look at the 13s available to the ABs now.
  10 was a problematic position for the Boks for the longest time too but look at the options coming through at the moment – very exciting.
  The real truth is tighthead has been problematic for years and years.
  CJ and BJ were hailed as the saviours in that position.
  But CJ has always had problems at scrum time.
  And I’ve only really seen BJ be dominant once or twice in a Bok jersey.

  1.) Ricky is the world’s most explosive scrumhalf. Nobody can read the game like him in tight situations. He is a national treasure.

  2.) Adi Jacobs is part of the worlds elite centres. He does his job quietly but he is deadly. The only thing that Sonny Bill has that Adi hasn’t got is tall height. Adi has more pace, more line-breaking and even better passing than Sonny Bill.

  @puff(puff)-64: Look i’m no scrummaging expert … although since moving to the States I could be considered a prop soon.

  My point is, Mujati did not seem to be very effective in a key game – the Heineken Cup final – he also is not competing against the best in South Africa; or the best of NZ and Aus who in my opinion are the favourites for the WC.

  I think Jannie Dup, has been diosappointing this season and even Smit has taken stick because of it (Crusaders game – Jannie was getting popped but Smit was getting blamed).

  Out of your list, I would go with BJ (I’m a biased Sharkie); to me CJ has never let the Boks down and has great experience and can play both sides … so I guess I would go with experience over a player who never set the house on fire in SA and is competing in a different world to prove his worth.

  @kevin w(kevin w)-68: The forward play up North is lightyears ahead of everything in SA! We still have coaching methos from the 60s and 80s… very slow to keep pace, and too arrogant to look farther afield and learn. If you want your front rowers to learn, send them up North. Without a shadow of a doubt the best thing that Mujati ever did. And look, he has turned into a star performer. The only area of weakness that the North has is England’s stale back play. But even that is starting to change. South Africa does not have great coaches and an even worse coaching culture, that’s why we’ve struggled since readmission. We’ve always had the players, but never the brains. How many rubbish coaches, i.e., Straeuli’s, McIntoshs, De Villiers, Viljoens et al have you seen coach NZ? It just doesn’t happen. Smooth transition after smooth transition, one astute rugby brain hands the reigns over to the next, Whilst we have one good coach pop up ever decade or so. Our Super rugby sides only started to improve on 2007, after foreigners came in to do their work. Look what happened to CJ, BJ, Beast, Jannie, Steenkamp, Maku, Chiliboy, Van Der Merwe were destroyed on the 09 EOYT. In one game against Leicster, three front rowers were mangled one after the other and cried off injured! Do not underestimate the quality up North. Italy has produced more quality props in the last 10 years than we have in the last 40. We are very far behind. Added to that, we are being sucked into this new League mentality, of lighter forwards who like to dance in defensively scrappy, sloppy high scoring games. These are not good things.

  @Blitzbok(Blitzbok)-69: Mate, the NH has managed 1 WC out of 7? Aussies who are **** at scrummaging apparently have triple the amount of world cups than the entire NH???? We have double and you claim Italy are better than us. Our tight 5 has always set the platform for the Boks so i just can’t agree with you. From Stransky, to De Beer, to Morne Steyn , you need a platform to put drop goals over. Your tight 5 create that platform. We wouldn’t be succesful, if they weren’t succesful. It’s common sense.

  @kevin w(kevin w)-70: Incorrect, every credible mind in the game is in agreement that the North is leading the way here. Scrummaging up North is much better. Our flimsy scrums have been consistently destroyed up North. Only NZ during the last cycle lead the way. The Aussie side of the 90s had a world class scrum and the best lineout in the world, so that again is wrong. Italy can rotate any one of 8 props without weaknesses. The one that faced us in 08 was a 4/5th string front row, and they mangled us. On the 09 EOYT Castrogiovani mangled THREE front rowers in one half. How you can say we have led the way is ridiculous, we have had a pap scrum for 12 years. The SH has not been on par for a very long time. Just look at Aus.

  Well i would say that the win ratio favours NZ, Aus & Boks over their NH counterparts both home and away. I guess scrums aren’t that important then, because they don’t really result in victories.

  Boks had a k@k EOYT – i personally wouldn’t base too much on that. Bring me a NH side that would win the Super 15.

  @kevin w(kevin w)-72: I never mentioned win ratios, I mentioned competency in the set pieces, particularly the scrum. They place far more emphasis on it, and coach it better. Even Dan Carter said that the NH hemisphere is slower but more tactical. How this translates to test wins is irrelevant, as it plays no part in what I am talking about.But on the subject, Australia and South Africa do not have great away records, and as we know NZ’s 47 penalties per yellow card ratio and the fear factor means they usually come out on top up north. So there, that argument is still suspect anyway.

  if mujati is not the answer (either unavailable or even overrated) then why not re-run the the experiment of playing smit at 3. we have 2 fantastic looseheads in beast and gurthro and we did completely dominate the tri-nations and win 3 in a row against the ABs with Smit at 3…

  thing is the scrum is a lot less important these days. its all about collisions, lineouts and ruck/mauls.

  @munkiboi(munkiboi)-79: With Smit at 3 our scrum got manhandled badly. We were not so dominant either. Suspect defence and woeful backline play meant we coasted those games. Brussow was the only real difference, should have been player of the year. He totally humiliated McCaw, who never had ONE good test that year, yet came away with the IRB award!! This nonsense of playing players out of position has never helped the Boks, Smit (1, 3) Adi (12, 11), Olivier (13, 14), Pienaar, (10, 15), Frans (15, 13), Morne (15), Kankowski (6, 7), Rossouw (6), Bekker (4), Butch (12), Jean (14), Monty (13), Potgieter (6), Carstens (1), Kirchner (13), Rose (15). Yes, all have been tried by de Villiers, and all have failed. His mantra of players not being specialists has to come to an end. It’s messed Smit around more than anyone else either. I wonder why he wasn’t enjoying his rugby, eh Divvy? Being stuffed around the front row, losing weight, bulking up, losing weight again, not knowing whether he is coming or going, and as he said actually concerned about his safety as he is not a real prop! But Divvy goes and persists with this garbage anyway. Adi injured and a liability at 13 in 2009? Solution: Put him even closer to the action at 12! Wanted to speed the game up in the first Lions test? solution: Replace Brussow with the slower Rossouw, out of position. Bok scrum keeping us in the game against Ireland in 09. Unsolution? Sub BJ, move Smit to 3 and bring on Bismarck. The entire game fell apart for us! This nonsense must stop now. It’s a World Cup year for goodness sake! Smit at 2, end of story.

  @TheAgent(TheAgent)-76: I fail to see your point. How many of those bully boys at younger level make it successfully at test level? Most end up being technically beaten with the senior level opponents. Body positions and all those things are inferior. Thats why we rely on brute force to compensate for our technical shortcomings. Because we do not coach these aspects of the game properly. Like I said, we still have coaching methods from the 60s and 80s!! And we do not have a system of progression for coaches like Nz. Nobody really knows who the best backline coaches and forward coaches really are. So we end up paying the price for this.

  @munkiboi(munkiboi)-79: Smit at 3 is not the worst plan Munki and the results bear that out. If the Boks could get Bismarck, Beast, Smit, Steenkamp all putting in a high intensity shift in one test they would be in a great position. Most times the scrum is not the winning and losing of any game, collisions and rucks as you say carry much greater importance.
