Jean de Villiers will be given the rest of the week to recover in time to face Samoa in Pretoria. Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer wants his captain to lead the side in the Boks final international of the month. If De Villiers does not recover from the chest injury, Jan Serfontein will start at inside centre. Morne Steyn again starts ahead of Pat Lambie. Willem Alberts will also be given the next 48 hours to prove his fitness. Adriaan Strauss retains the run on No 2 jersey while Bismarck du Plessis is nursed back after nine months out of the game. Boks - 15. Willie le Roux, 14. Bryan ... Read Article1 Jun 2013
The Bulls are South Africa's best team and they proved it in Bloemfontein. The Cheetahs have been outstanding all season and they were as good on Saturday night as they have been at any stage. Still it wasn't good enough to beat the Bulls, who won 30-25 after leading 30-13 with 10 minutes to play. The Cheetahs finished brilliantly and deserved the bonus point, but the Bulls consolidated their top two league placing thanks to an imposing first hour. Pierre Spies was impressive as team and pack leader, Arno Botha was ever present and the No 9, 10, 12 Bulls axis of Francois Hougaard, Morne ... Read Article11 Jun 2013
Brendan Venter's appointment as Sharks Director of Rugby is a good one. But the decision to end John Plumtree's Sharks coaching tenure is not. Former Springbok and Italy coach Nick Mallett turned down an invitation for the role of Sharks Director of Rugby and Venter, formerly the head coach and Director of Rugby at Saracens, will start his job at the outset of the Currie Cup season. Plumtree remains the Super Rugby head coach until the end of this season's tournament but his contract has not been renewed. Plumtree is highly rated in Europe and will in all likelihood link up with a European ... Read Article8 Jun 2013
Rene Ranger was among the few highlights in New Zealand's 23-13 win against France in Auckland. The All Blacks led 17-10 at half time but France dominated field position for most of the match and enjoyed the greater quality in possession. However they couldn't translate the advantage in the set phase and at the breakdown into points. New Zealand defended well in a match of poor quality. France lead early through Wesley Fofana's try and it took Ben Smith's break to start up New Zealand's international season. Smith has been the form New Zealand back in Super Rugby and he looked a class ... Read Article27 May 2013
Kiwi Vern Cotter is Scotland's new head coach. Cotter will only take up the position in a year's time. He will see out his contact with French club Clermont. Cotter's appointment means that New Zealanders will coach Scotland, Ireland (Joe Schmidt) and Wales (Warren Gatland). New Zealander Robbie Deans has been at the helm of Australia for the last five years and current Blues coach John Kirwan coached Italy and Japan. Kiwi coaches have also been at the helm of Samoa and Fiji in recent years. Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article15 Jun 2011

@I am a stormer(I am a stormer)-95: couldn’t agree more. And there are plenty more behind them. Watching young Etsabeth bardge through the Irish at the U20 RWC is a case in point. But yes, plenty of talent this side of the Hex River still to be mined IMO.

Habana is a legend in his own infatuated blessed up koptoe kop, he ain’t even a team player, just a solo legendary loner with a massive ego problemo, seems rugby has sold its soul right down the Swanee mercenary river a long long time ago… anyway back to brass tacks?.. nah… doubt it much

@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-102:
This is the sort of Stormers team I would envisage in 2012.
15 Aplon
14 Sadie
13 Jaque
12 JDJ
11 JJ Engelbrecht
10 van Aswegen
9 Duvenhage
8 Vermeulen
7 Elstadt
6 Schalk
5 Bekker
4 Eben Etsebeth
3 Brok
2 Liebenberg
1 Blaauw
And there’s still Koster, rooi-kop Etsebeth, Deon Fourie,Lionel Cronje, JDV etc on the bench.

@I am a stormer(I am a stormer)-103: JdV on the bench is like leaving the Picasso’s in the storeroom on exhibition day.
15 Jun 2011, 21:51 pm
I’d love to know which way skoppie sees the Bulls/Sharks going this weekend… his two least favourite teams… hates them with a passion… usually he backs the underdog but I can’t see him saying a nice thing about the Sharks
15 Jun 2011, 21:51 pm
seriously, Rassie and Co have developed a serious and structured support base of talent, who have been groomed and managed exceptionally well to slot into the shoes of older departing shoes. Players want to stay in the setup but when and if they decide to move on, there always seems to be a young talent waiting in the wings. Supporting evidence: the two young props, the long string of young No 10′s and so on. Rassie is planning ahead.

@TASSIES(TASSIES)-104:
I hear you. I’m a huge JDV fan. Always have been. But. Life goes on. These guys only have such a long shelf life. In this professional set-up one sometimes has to be brutal.
JDV is approaching 30 if not already. And he’s still in the match 22. It’s not like I’ve ditched him like I did Bryan. The guys I have selected are the future.
And the future looks bright.

@wooden spoon: Plumtree must go(wooden spoon)-105: its getting close to Xmas WS. Chill in the air is entirely your imagination. You might get lucky. It’s the Bulls remember. Guppies lesser of two evils.

Van Aswegen
Duvenhage
Koster
Elstadt
Carr
Bekker
Etsebeth
Harris
Fourie
Blaauw
Kitschoff, Liebenberg, Steenkamp, Vermeulen, Schreuder, Cronje, Aplon
JdV, Burger, Fourie, Coleman
where that Venter in die center No.12 at u20′s from? wtf happened to the all promising Elgar Watts? who’s the No.2 hooker at u20′s? where is the No.15 and No.10 and No.8 from?
15 Jun 2011, 21:57 pm
@I am a stormer(I am a stormer)-107: Yip but Jean is playing some of the best rugby of his career. He’s also the de facto leader of the backline and what a backline that can be when firing. I’d mark him down first. rest to follow.
15 Jun 2011, 22:00 pm
@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-109: I buy that thinking Skop. Good teams.
15 Jun 2011, 22:04 pm
I’m outta here. Night girls. Book beckoning.

I reckon Bully Brekers gonna catch a fright Saturday, they were by no means as dominant at Newlands as Keohane and most Bully Breker disciples like to believe, they were actually Stormpies bevrees and played kak, only that Schalk and Bekker and Januarie and Habana were even more Bully Breker bevrees and played even kakker.
If Lambie and Michalak and Bismark and Beast and Alberts and Deysel and JPP and Mvovo wake up and don’t step back like Stormers did for 70 minutes last week, Sharks can actually pull an upset in Tswane Town under the Jacaranda trees and show the Bully Breeks they not as super duper invincible as they might have thought they are.
Between, Ludick, Bosman, Terblanche, Steyn, WO, Pretorius and Kirchner you might have the most mediocre one dimensional backs parading around in world rugby. Only the 4 wings got any gas and any rugby revolutionary rectitude going the other 6 or 7 half participants are a snore a minute if and when they get hold of the ball.

@TASSIES(TASSIES)-112: night Oom Tass
15 Jun 2011, 22:13 pm
@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-109:
1 Your team is dependent on Viljoen going to the Cape. Hope it happens.
2 Poolman is solid – but never really impressed me. Rather have Sadie there.
3 You left out Jaque – not sure what his plans are post WC -hope he re-signs with WPRU.
Elgar Watts is with Boland – should’ve started ahead of Coleman as he played in a couple of the warm-up games before the S15.
That young 10 with the baby Boks is Johan Goosen – from the Free State. That’s one to watch.
Not sure of the others.
15 Jun 2011, 22:27 pm
@I am a stormer(I am a stormer)-115:
I’d possibly go
9 Duvenhage, 10 Van Aswegen, 11 Engelbrecht, 12 JdJ, 13 Sadie, 14 Fourie, 15 Aplon / Viljoen
15 Jun 2011, 23:01 pm
this former nazi-loving sadf township oppressor boring us to death again with his team compilations which bizarrely includes players that have no inclination to sign for the stormers!
15 Jun 2011, 23:04 pm
aah what the fck does this self confessed stupefied dumb idiot know about anything let alone rugby?
15 Jun 2011, 23:41 pm
the dumb prick trying to soothe his conscious by allowing his labourers to sit in the front seat of his bakkie thus believing it will transform him into an english speaking cape liberal.how the fck can a springs nazi lover believes he can transform himself into a cape liberal?
16 Jun 2011, 00:10 am
Wow. Van Asweging must be good as everyone rates him higher than Cronje?
@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-116: Aplon’s position is non-negotiable at this stage.
Next year, if de Villiers go and Viljoen moves to Cape Town;
Viljoen
Fourie
Sadie
de Jongh
Aplon
Cronje
Duvenhage
Vermeulen
Elstadt
Burger/Koster
Bekker
Fondse
Harris
Fourie
Blaauw

It should be a tight game, there’s not much seperating the top 3 SA teams, they all have their pros and cons.
The Stormers v Cheetahs game promises to also be a humdinger, the tahs are in spectacular form, reckon not many sides will get a result in bloem at teh moment.
16 Jun 2011, 00:34 am
News 24:
Stormers after Hougaard, Bulls after Sadie. Interesting.
