Duane Vermeulen is out of the June Tests. Stormers strong man Duane Vermeulen returned home from the Stormers Super Rugby tour because of injury and conservatively won't play again until July. It could be that he is out for the remainder of the Super Rugby season as well because of knee ligament damage. Stormers loose-forward Rynhardt Elstadt is also out for at least six weeks as the Cape-based franchise's season went from bad to worse in Sydney. Vermeulen, Meyer's first choice No 8, will be nursed back to action for the Rugby Championship in August. His injury means a likely Bok start ... Read Article18 May 2013

Jan Serfontein, the player of last year's under 20 World Championship, will head the baby Boks defence in France. Serfontein and Kings wing Sergeal Petersen are two Super Rugby regulars to make Dawie Theron's squad and brilliant flyhalf Handre Pollard is another to play in a second successive tournament. Theron's squad lost a three-match series 2-1 to Argentina in Argentina. Serfontein, Petersen and Western Province's Cheslin Kolbe did not play in those matches. Bulls loose forward Ruan Steenkamp is captain. Serfontein and Pollard are the only two squad members from last year's ... Read Article14 May 2013
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has selected several uncapped Blues players in his training group. Hansen confirmed 38 names and this included many from the potent Blues backline. The Highlanders, despite only winning one match in this year's Super Rugby competition, have six players in the group. An obvious area of weakness is at hooker where Hansen has selected veterans Andrew Hore and Keven Mealamu and Canes Dane Coles. Options are limited and it certainly is a concern for New Zealanders. No overseas-based players were considered, as it is NZRFU policy. Among the uncapped players ... Read Article15 May 2013
French coach Philipe Saint-Andre has included three South African-born players for the three-Test series against the All Blacks in New Zealand. Racing Metro flank Bernard le Roux and Clermont prop Daniel Kotze join Antonie Claassen in a squad that includes eight new caps. Fijian-born Clermont winger Noa Nakaitaci is among the newcomers. Saint-Andre has rested flyhalf Francois Trinh-Duc, but included Toulon's Frederic Michalak. France play world champions New Zealand on June 8, 15 and 22 in Auckland, Hamilton and New Plymouth respectively. French super club Toulon's foreign dominance ... Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article24 Jun 2011

hope I am wrong
but just cannot see a sharks win
24 Jun 2011, 12:32 pm
Its so true, if the Sharks are to beat the Saders, it will need to be a 100% committed effort from all 8 forwards for 80min. Same goes for the whole teams defense. Should also stop putting so much emphasis on SBW. If we can make them go backwards for 80min with a dominant forward display and defense, he will be nullified as a threat. He needs to operate on front foot ball take that away from him he will struggle! And Bossie and Steffie need to be at their best, defensively, cut down their space!
24 Jun 2011, 12:38 pm
I can see the Sharks do it.
But they will have to give everything.
24 Jun 2011, 13:08 pm
The Crusaders have lost enough games this year to make this a possibility. Not a big possibility, but one that is possible.
24 Jun 2011, 14:03 pm
Like most Saffers I’d LOVE to see the Sharks win, but they’ve blown their load after the Bulls game. Not gonna happen …
24 Jun 2011, 15:05 pm
I just have a feeling that it will be Sharks by 8 – no good reason, but I reckon that’s going to be their winning margin (fingers crossed)!
Sharks Forever
24 Jun 2011, 15:09 pm
best of luck sharks….
bloody important you boys do well ….
24 Jun 2011, 15:18 pm
Sharks will win the forward battle (perhaps scrums aside), it’s the backline defence which needs to be optimum. Terblanche and Bosman have a heck of a task on their hands.
24 Jun 2011, 15:55 pm
Just cant find a reason to like this ryan dude, anyways cant wait for the game, cancelled all of my clients so i have my day for this game, got belief!!!!!! sharks are gonna do it!!!!
24 Jun 2011, 18:45 pm
Ryan, its the Super 15 playoffs
24 Jun 2011, 19:51 pm
The Crusaders haven’t been so great lately, in fact they were quite bad, but then their opposition slip up so badly and let them snatch the win.
As long as Bosman doesn’t miss any tackles unlike what he did at Twickenham against the Crusaders a while back, the Sharks have all the right firepower to give the Crusaders a hiding. Michelak has really done wonders for the team at flyhalf, good thing that he re-joined the Sharks once again:)
24 Jun 2011, 21:50 pm
@daydreamer(daydreamer)-11: Bosman played very well in that game. the sharks were on the back foot in the first half. but in the second bosman reduced sonny to a wild offload and a grubber kick down the touchline. he dominated sonny in that second half totally out playing him ball in hand too!
24 Jun 2011, 21:57 pm
@daydreamer(daydreamer)-11: crusaders have not been playing well for most tournament. teams have not been smart when playing them. sharks showed the way at twickers. kill them at the source and get in their faces. confined defence limits sonnys offloading which is way too depended on by the saders. sonny also cannot attack the gainline like a nonu. so that offload is his chief threat. a smart and physical sharks side will win. but must be patient. bissmark better control himself and that Doctor Do Little (sweet fek all) brother of his.
24 Jun 2011, 22:02 pm
@Big Hit(Big Hit)-8: the inside ball has been a helluva problem for them! too easy to slip one through and boom! so yeah i agree defence will be huge. hope its like that second half at twickers eh? totally stuffed saders and circus boy sonny bwahahaha
24 Jun 2011, 23:24 pm
If Crusaders manage to snatch the title, IMHO, it will be the greatest ever.
Even reaching the semis will be great result without a single game in the home city.
24 Jun 2011, 23:29 pm
@Blitzbok(Blitzbok)-14: You mean “totally stuffed” when sharky roasting job was already done?
24 Jun 2011, 23:45 pm
@Nils(Nils)-15: Without doubt a great achievement. Similar to the Bulls winning their semi and final in Soweto.

Barring a late stampede by fans, the Crusaders will cop a financial hit from their Super playoff match against the Sharks in Nelson tonight.
Last night only about 11,000 tickets had sold for the semifinal qualifier at Trafalgar Park – 7000 short of capacity – ensuring the Crusaders are set to bleed money from the fixture.
Playing in Nelson was always going to be a gamble for the franchise, which will barely break even if the match is a sellout, because they have to pay the Sharks a hosting fee of A$75,000 (NZ$97,000), their travel and accommodation costs and overhead costs.
Despite the expected loss, chief executive Hamish Riach says the Crusaders have no regrets about taking the match to Nelson.
If they beat the Sharks the Crusaders will earn a fee of A$100,000 from their semi against the Stormers in Cape Town next weekend. If they face the Queensland Reds in Brisbane for the final they will be awarded A$125,000.
But if they “host” their final at Eden Park in Auckland, as planned, their income will be from gate takings – although that venue could change if the Blues are also a finalist.
Playing in front of their own supporters was a strong incentive for the Crusaders’ senior players to insist they play in Nelson and the fact it also inconvenienced the Sharks by forcing them to board an extra flight may also have been factored in.
Although Riach would not comment, it is understood the Crusaders asked Sanzar to consider helping to pay the fee – something that is unlikely as the body does not have any cash reserves.
Approaches to the New Zealand Rugby Union also made little headway, but given the Crusaders’ parlous financial situation it seems likely the NZRU will be eventually required to cover the cost in the form of a loan or grant which is currently being considered.

@Big Hit(Big Hit)-8:
Can you confirm that a Kiwi will captain the England side this year and a Samoan will be vice captain, its only a rumour at this stage?
25 Jun 2011, 05:44 am
@Blitzbok(Blitzbok)-14:
Yer you really carved them up, it was by far your best loss ever.
25 Jun 2011, 06:38 am
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-4: a possibility that is possible as opposed to…?
25 Jun 2011, 06:43 am
@Blitzbok(Blitzbok)-12: You are deluded…the game was won in the first 30…only a fool would try to justify the sharks’ purchase of Meyer Bosman.
25 Jun 2011, 06:43 am
@NZINCHINA(NZINCHINA)-20:
I agree, it’s like a last minute try when the game is over, the winning team are thinking about the beer already.
But the Sharks have something of a resurgence going at the moment, it started in the second half of the Lions match and continued against the Bulls. I know it’s a monumental task but if they are as committed to winning today, as they were last week, then i think The Sharks may cause a massive upset.
25 Jun 2011, 06:46 am
Anybody know what the weather’s like in Nelson?
25 Jun 2011, 07:02 am
So how many ppl was at the Blues game last night? about 5000? shocking an they will be hosting a RWC?? also only 16 000 expected at the Sharks/Saders game??? wtf? in SA you get 50 000+ people! you get even more ppl at a EP kings vs Pumas game! shocking!!!! ditch a NZ team for the Kings!! maybe the Canes or Highlanders or Chiefs – they are k@k anyway!
25 Jun 2011, 07:05 am
@Willy(willyzn)-24: 12 degrees, partly cloudy
25 Jun 2011, 07:06 am
@Jorrie_Habana(WO_to_kill_Sir_Elton)-25: Fk the Kings, a bunch of politics wrapped up in Bok hating pompous captain Sir Puke Alot
25 Jun 2011, 07:19 am
@Willy(willyzn)-23:
Why would it be a massive upset, Sharks are a quality side they had to travel so what, no different from the Crusaders C team beating the Stormers at Newlands.
25 Jun 2011, 07:20 am
@goyougoodthing2(goyougoodthing2)-26:
Looks perfect, I hope the plan to stay on ‘SA time’ worked out okay.

25 Jun 2011, 07:24 am
@NZINCHINA(NZINCHINA)-28:
Yeah, you’re right, it’s just that everybody has written the Sharks off already.
That ought to be a good motivator for the Sharks in itself.
25 Jun 2011, 07:27 am
@goyougoodthing2(goyougoodthing2)-32: Are you in Nelson?
25 Jun 2011, 07:43 am

25 Jun 2011, 08:06 am
@NZINCHINA(NZINCHINA)-28: Sorry,I am a bit slow>Iknow now what you mean.Ha-ha.
25 Jun 2011, 08:11 am
hate to say it but I just watched the Waratahs game again and they were done by the referee at every turn. Blues first try was forward and every single call that could go the Blues way went.
In short the Tahs perhaps were not up to it, but a very average Blues team beat them with some help. Sorry to say it.
25 Jun 2011, 08:17 am
@LITELOCK(LITELOCK)-40: Mate are you going to the game?
25 Jun 2011, 08:29 am
@goyougoodthing2(goyougoodthing2)-44: No,if you want to talk conspiracies, then how come its always me on on call out duties every time theres a Saders game in Nelson?????
25 Jun 2011, 08:33 am
@LITELOCK(LITELOCK)-45: That sucks mate
25 Jun 2011, 08:34 am
@goyougoodthing2(goyougoodthing2)-26:
Does the sun ever shine there….
25 Jun 2011, 08:36 am
@goyougoodthing2(goyougoodthing2)-46: The battery may go mysteriosly flat for 90 min later tonight though…..
25 Jun 2011, 08:36 am
@Great White Shark(Predawn)-47: From what I hear and Litelock can confirm this, Nelson gets more sun than most of NZ, about 3 days a year LOL. Seriously though, it is a sunny part of the country I hear
25 Jun 2011, 08:39 am
@goyougoodthing2(goyougoodthing2)-49:
Oh okay. Not sure then why the South African teams don’t like touring there. Can’t be much different from Bloemfontein or Kimberley.
