Italy pivot pulls out - Craig Gower has ruled himself out of the World Cup because of a knee injury.

The Australian-born Italian flyhalf feels he will not recover in time for the tournament in New Zealand by September.

‘I’m not in a position to express myself 100 percent and I don’t think I will be in the next few months,’ he said. ‘It’s not been an easy decision. Playing in a World Cup is the target of every player.’

Gower has been replaced by another Aussie, Kristopher Burton. There are three South African players in the 36-man group, locks Cornelius Van Zyl, Quintin Geldenhuys and Carlo del Fava.

Head coach Nick Mallett will name his final World Cup squad of 30 after their warm-up games against Japan in Cesena on August 13 and Scotland in Edinburgh on August 20.
