Boks beef up defence

Stormers defence coach Jacques Nienaber will work with the Springboks in the build up to and at the World Cup.

Coach Peter de Villiers will name his squad for the home leg of the Tri-Nations on 9 July. The best available players will be selected for South Africa’s home matches, but a second string side will tour Australasia for the last two games of the tournament.

According to the Cape Argus, Nienaber has been drafted into the set-up to help with the defence following his great success with the Stormers. The Cape side has been the best defensive team in Super Rugby for the past two seasons, and Nienaber is largely responsible.

Bok technical advisor Rassie Erasmus and Nienaber will work with the senior Boks while the ‘B’ side tours Australasia. The new systems will be complemented by strength and conditioning sessions with Derik Coetzee, who held the post of conditioning coach during Jake White’s tenure.

Nienaber will resume his duties at the Stormers and Western Province after the World Cup.

@nama1(nama1)-48: why are u asking rhetorical questions? alucard doesn’t give jake the credit of winning the 07 RWC, that honour goes to eddie jones, rassie erasmus, anton eddy, ian mac, gary gold -who taught jake the rush defence!

“..Stormers defence coach Jacques Nienaber will work with the Springboks..”

What defence did the Stormers have against the Crusaders for ****** sake?

I honestly think the the Bok management are a bunch of morons.

Jean Devilliers and Jaque Fourie had a defence full of holes in the Semis

Is this the same centre pair who are going to defend our RWC ?

    Boks are Doomed

    and i dont care

i think were agreeing on this point, are’nt we? jake white (along with his assistants) did in fact win the world cup, no? or are you saying that he was similarly to pdiv a ‘token’ of sorts? and does this also hold for woodward who had all those specialist assistants like the hand-eye coordination lady coach and so on?
    i am agreeing with you.

the bookies had the boks at 10 to 1 odds for the 2007 wc and a lot of guys had the last laugh with some big wagers placed. the boks came last in that years 3nations you’ll recall – lost 3 won 1 but went on to win the wc.

Oh man that is fantastic news! I was hoping it would come together with Nienaber for the RWC after Divvy’s first attempt at getting him in earlier didn’t work out. Already our 2 biggest weakesses, our conditioning and our defence, have been addressed through quality aquisitions. Well played.

Chris Rattue, NZ Herald (6.7.11) discovers the Bok RWC game-plan…

“Peter de Villiers didn’t look like a happy man in the stands as the Crusaders pummelled the Stormers at Newlands on Sunday.

Away from the public glare though, the Springboks coach might have afforded himself a wee smile because the Super 15 semifinal provided further confirmation that the world champions don’t have what it takes to compete with New Zealand and Australia’s attacking game.

Knowing he doesn’t have the players to attack, de Villiers can get back to basics, which in South Africa involves trench warfare, lineout supremacy, field position, bombs, kicking the goals and letting opponents make the mistakes. This is a formula by which they are more than capable of defending their title.

The Stormers, with a test-class three-quarters line, were second rate, if not third. The more South Africa relies on their traditional strengths and the more they forget about any so-called obligation to make the World Cup an entertaining showpiece, the more dangerous they will be. They still have ample power in the forwards to win this year’s World Cup so long as the champs have enough belief in their limited approach. It’s only when South African teams get away from this philosophy that they look out of their depth.

However a major mystery remains about South African rugby: why are they such ordinary scrummagers?

They have the bulk but not the attitude and/or technique to match. South African rugby should forget about the frills and institute a crusade to turn their scrums into massive weapons of destruction. At the moment, South Africa is letting the rest of the world off on this score, considering scrums should be at the heart of their power game.

But they are unlikely to ever match New Zealand and Australia in attacking flair for the simple reason they don’t have Maori and Pacific Island players.

Virtually all of rugby’s most dangerous attacking backs have Maori or Polynesian/ Melanesian heritage, to the point that even England sneak visiting players with those bloodlines into their national lineup.

Sonny Bill Williams, Ma’a Nonu, Robbie Fruean, Israel Dagg, Hosea Gear, Joe Rokocoko, Sitiveni Sivivatu, Rupeni Caucaunibuca, Rene Ranger, Isaia Toeava, Will Genia, Quade Cooper, Digby Ioane, Lote Tuqiri – there’s a strong common denominator there and one not available to South Africa. If you can’t beat them, don’t even bother trying. That will be the South African motto.

The past two World Cups have been won by teams with narrow gameplans. The rules may have changed, but that rule can still apply.

De Villiers got the message loud and clear at Newlands, and his team is still dominated by an old guard of influential forwards. What’s the bet South Africa arrive at the World Cup with a plan you could write on the back of a postage stamp, so long as it is big enough to fit the words “drop” and “goals” on it? They could swap notes with England – and rest assured, both countries will be all the more dangerous for sticking to their knitting, rather than trying to weave any fancy patterns.”

Boks to man handle the fancy playing southern hemisphere teams! unfortunately that how it works.. in pressure environments the boks/england game plan is equally dangerous if not more than a reds game plan during super rugby! destructive like hell!! Not pretty but darn effective!

just hope some of the oupas in the bok set up still has enough grunt left to give their young opponents a thorough and brutal PAKSLAE!!!!

we can slate bakkies for all we like but in the past when our front rows folded it was normally when bakkies was off the field. If we are going to replace him we need someone who can give the same support to the front row and Bekker not the answer. Bekker must come off the bench in Matfields place and either Danie or Flip to replace Bakkies.

  • 80.boktillzero: Reply to this comment

boks need people who are not scared to tackle and don’t fall off tackles – they’ve lost their rep as the bullies of the game , they need to harden up …again!

best tacklers/defensive team the boks have

    1.Beast
    2.Bismark
    3.no one/ Mujati
    4.Bakkies
    5.Bekker,
    6.Brussow
    7.Juan
    8.Dannie
    9.Du Preez
    10.**Butch
    11. no one / *Habana/ *JP
    12.JDV
    13. JF
    14. Aplon
    15.F Steyn

    Bench : Chilly,Guthro,Burger,Vermulen,***Ruan, JDJ,Lambie

These players man up game in game out collectively they can smother any attack while having enough talent to and power to go forward and attack

    * = major defensive liability but no other options
** = yellow card waiting to happen
    *** = lack of a better option

@boktillzero(boktillzero)-80: Nice team. Am surprised by how much it resembles our normal starting lineup.
I would play JP at 11 and swop Hougard for Ruan. How difficult is it to move a loosehead to tight? Never been a forward. If possible, Guthro should be tried there. He is stronger and more reliable than Smit and Jannie.
