Currie Cup latest – Bulls keep it steady
20 Jul 2011
Keo.co.za brings you news from the Currie Cup.
Bulls keep it steady – The Bulls have named the same starting line-up that lost to the Sharks last weekend for their match against the Cheetahs on Saturday.
Head coach Pine Pienaar will persist with the run-on side that went down 35-16 in Durban. The only changes are on the bench as prop Frik Kirsten and scrumhalf Ruan Snyman replace Juan Schoeman and Lohan Jacobs respectively.
Bulls – 15 Jurgen Visser, 14 Gerhard van den Heever, 13 Stephan Dippenaar, 12 Stefan Watermeyer, 11 Akona Ndungane, 10 Francois Brummer, 9 Dustin Jinka, 8 Gerrit-Jan van Velze, 7 Dewald Potgieter, 6 Derick Kuün, 5 Juandré Kruger, 4 Fudge Mabeta, 3 Rossouw de Klerk, 2 Gary Botha (c), 1 Corné Fourie.
Subs: 16 Willie Wepener, 17 Frik Kirsten, 18 Okkie Kruger, 19 CJ Stander, 20 Ruan Snyman, 21 Marnitz Boshoff, 22 Francois Venter.
Same Sharks for Pumas – The Sharks’ made no changes to their run-on side for their match against the Pumas in Nelspruit on Friday.
Prop Eugene van Staden is the only possible change as he’s bracketed with Julian Redelinghuys on the bench. Van Staden will face a late fitness test to determine his availability.
Sharks – 15 Stefan Terblanche, 14 Louis Ludik, 13 Marius Joubert, 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 Mark Richards, 10 Frederic Michalak, 9 Ross Cronje, 8 Keegan Daniel (c), 7 Marcell Coetzee, 6 Jacques Botes, 5 Ross Skeate, 4 Anton Bresler, 3 Wiehahn Herbst, 2 Craig Burden, 1 Dale Chadwick.
Subs: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Julian Redelinghuys/Eugen van Staden, 18 Jan Marais, 19 Francois Kleinhans, 20 Jacobus Reinach, 21 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 22 Sibusiso Sithole.
CJ linked to Lions – CJ van der Linde has been released from his contract with Western Province and could join the Lions as early as 1 August.
Van der Linde had a disappointing first season for the Stormers, but the news will come as a blow as his departure will leave the Cape side with only one experienced tighthead in Brok Harris. Van der Linde is expected to sign with the Lions until 2013.
Meanwhile the Johannesburg union have announced three changes to the side that will face Griquas.
Michael Killian comes in at fullback for the injured Jaco Taute. Dylan des Fountain is replaced by Deon van Rensburg at right wing and centre Waylon Murray comes in at outside centre for Alwyn Hollenbach.
Lions - 15 Michael Killian, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Waylon Murray, 12 Doppies La Grange, 11 Lionel Mapoe, 10 Burton Francis, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 Joshua Strauss, 7 Derick Minnie, 6 Cobus Grobbelaar, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Wikus van Heerden, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 Pat Cilliers
Substitutes: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 JC Janse van Rensburg, 18 Johan Snyman, 19 Dries van Schalkwyk, 20 Michael Bondesio, 21 Hein Cronje, 22 Alwyn Hollenbach

Rassie we need experienced props. Dragons
20 Jul 2011, 07:56 am
Just like WP / Stormers.
Allow our tightheads to leave and chase flanks and backs….
P Grant allowed to buggeroff to Japan again as well….while we now head to Varsity Cup flyhalves and 1 3 prop.
All the while a few of us stupid fool fans continue to travel to Newlands only to leave frustrated and dissapointed….time after time.
Rassie/ AC////come on gents….how much more pain and suffering for the faithful?
20 Jul 2011, 08:01 am
Leave the pain and suffering to us lions fans;) excited about CJ though.
20 Jul 2011, 08:19 am
It seems Rassie and AC have a lot of faith in old Brokkie and Wickus.
20 Jul 2011, 08:22 am
Yeah.. we need a couple more quality props… and losing CJ may be the first step in that process… He’s being paid a premium salary and when he was fit (all two-and-a-half games) he hardly set our scrum in concrete…
Now we can use his salary to employ a better scrummager…
so cheerio CJ… won’t really miss you…
20 Jul 2011, 08:23 am
we do need another good tighthead.. harris can’t keep playing every single game as he has for three years now…
20 Jul 2011, 08:27 am
the next bok 3 is Wiehahn Herbst.
20 Jul 2011, 08:35 am
i’m surprised he still put his faith in the lions given all the shhit going on there. must be a money move but will they be able to pay at the end of the day.
20 Jul 2011, 08:40 am
JC Kritzinger I guess…..
20 Jul 2011, 08:54 am
wp only has brok harris now, yoh i would worry if i were their fans, brok “the rock” is rubbish.
20 Jul 2011, 08:56 am
@Transformation(Transformation)-10: Leave the rock alone!
20 Jul 2011, 09:02 am
smell what the rock is cooking!!
20 Jul 2011, 09:15 am
Hell and there I though CJ had a bit of ambition……………
20 Jul 2011, 09:24 am
cj is turning out to be a real “journey man” cheetahs, leinster, wp/stormers & now lions nc nc nc

@stormersboy(stormersboy)-11:
Province team for Saturday
Western Province: 15 Conrad Jantjes, 14 Danie Poolman, 13 Johann Sadie, 12 Tim Whitehead, 11 JJ Engelbrecht, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Dewaldt Duvenage, 8 Nick Koster, 7 Siya Kolisi, 6 Rohan Kitshoff, 5 De Kock Steenkamp, 4 Hilton Lobberts, 3 Brok Harris, 2 Deon Fourie (captain), 1 Wicus Blaauw.
Replacements: 16 Tiaan Liebenberg, 17 Frans Malherbe, 18 Adriaan Fondse, 19 Nicholas Fenton-Wells, 20 Louis Schreuder, 21 Isma-eel Dollie, 22 Marcel Brache.
Steenkamp and Lobberts ahead of Fondse??? what your take?
20 Jul 2011, 09:34 am
@mxhosa(mxhosa)-15: that Poolman was rubbish on the weekend, rocco jansen made him his beeeyatch
20 Jul 2011, 09:34 am
Demetri Catrakilis let’s see what the greek boy got…
20 Jul 2011, 09:35 am
Isma-eel Dollie the prodigal son is back
20 Jul 2011, 09:37 am
@mxhosa(mxhosa)-15: I must admit I’m surprised, although Fondse has struggled to find the form of last year.
I wondered if he’s give a guy like Eben etsebeth a go, it is against a lesser team so give him a look and see,….
Lobberts is a bit hot headed but he does have a physicality that we need so maybe….
What do you think?
20 Jul 2011, 09:38 am
Dollie is on the bench? I thought he was playing in Japan?
20 Jul 2011, 09:38 am
@Transformation(Transformation)-16: I agree. i’ve met him, he’s a big fella for a wing, but I always preferred JJ to him.
20 Jul 2011, 09:40 am
sorry spelling is bad on that post, meant to say I was wondering if they’d give Eben Etsebeth a go at some stage, he’s an up and comer for sure, and this weekend is against one of the weaker teams that we are likely to face in the CC, so not a bad time to blood him…
20 Jul 2011, 09:44 am
yeah i was surprised fondse didn’t start last game…
give Eben a go…
also thought v d walt (6) was waaaaay too slow… not surprised he’s not there…
20 Jul 2011, 09:45 am
WP developing alot of depth at 10 at the moment. I think its right that they allow Peter Grant to play in Japan, it allows the youngsters some game time and it allows Grant to drown his sorrows in saki for not making the world cup squad.
20 Jul 2011, 09:50 am
@ufo(ufo)-23: Yes very dissapointed in Wimpy. Grant rates kitshoff, I guess we’ll see how it goes.
Quite a young loose forward combo. lacking a stalwart in there to steady the ship IMO.
Waiting for PLO to come back. He’ll make a difference for sure.
20 Jul 2011, 09:51 am
@ufo(ufo)-23: Ja wat hapened to Fondse? He couldnt of slipped that much in form? It must be a problem between him and management. Hope he comes right. Ja would love to see what Eben can do in the Currie cup. WP has totally given up on winning the Currie Cup, it seems they just use it for development purposes.
20 Jul 2011, 09:53 am
Why is Liebenberg on the bench?
20 Jul 2011, 09:55 am
@Transformation(Transformation)-16:
Didn’t watch the game, but I wasn’t impressed with what I saw in the super15, very pedestrian….. three former Grey High boys in that starting XV
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-19:
I honestly don’t care who they play, just wanted your view as a WP fan, no disrespect….
20 Jul 2011, 09:57 am
@mxhosa(mxhosa)-28: none taken. Wondered if you had an opinion on the matter, that’s all. Which team do you support?
20 Jul 2011, 10:10 am
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-29:
I support the EP Kings!
I just don’t think you can go from being one of the best forwards the previous year then lose your place to an u21 flanker, just because he had one or two very good pre-season games…. especially when you consider that the team persisted with Habana and Jantjies.
20 Jul 2011, 10:14 am
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-29:
If they don’t rate Fondse, they might as well give Eben a chance. The last time I saw a Saffa lock that dominant at age group was at 2003, u21 World Champs. Care to take a guess who it is?
20 Jul 2011, 10:28 am
@mxhosa(mxhosa)-30: Good for you mate.
I agree with Fondse, there must be something behind it.
@mxhosa(mxhosa)-31: I really rate Eben too.
Who was the lock? Andries? Not Hilton?
20 Jul 2011, 10:35 am
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-32:
Yep, Andries Bekker….
20 Jul 2011, 10:42 am
@mxhosa(mxhosa)-33: i spoke to Eben earlier in the year, apparently he’s 1cm shorter than Andries was at the same age (he’s was 19 years old and 2.03m when i spoke to him). Bodes well for the future.
He’s bulkier than Andries was at the same age, by some margin.
20 Jul 2011, 10:42 am
@mxhosa(mxhosa)-30: Ja exactly. I said the same thing above. he must of had a fall out with management.
20 Jul 2011, 10:52 am
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-34:
If the WP management do a better job of keeping hold of their young players, the future of SA rugby is WP
These guys could all be playing for the u21 side
8 Koster
7 Kolisi
6 vd Walt/Carr
5 Etsebeth
4 ????
3 Malherbe
2 Ntubeni
1 Kitshoff
20 Jul 2011, 10:56 am
@mxhosa(mxhosa)-36: Too true. Let’s hope they can stay, although I’m sure you’d love Siya to come home, but we’d lik eto keep him here if it’s all the same to you
20 Jul 2011, 11:13 am
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-37:
Him, Whitehead, JJ and Tiger Bax
20 Jul 2011, 11:18 am
@mxhosa(mxhosa)-36: Ha ha, you two should get out more, there is a big wide world outside the borders of the Cape! Not every player coming out of the Cape is SA’s next best hope. The players mentioned are all good players, but there is hordes f young players equally as good!
You only have to see how the WP performed in the Craven Weejk, to realise, the future of SA is definately not in WP!!
The WProblems have had wnderful players over many years, but alas STILL NO CUPS!! 11 years and counting!!
20 Jul 2011, 11:20 am
@mxhosa(mxhosa)-38: A couple, ne?
20 Jul 2011, 11:31 am
WP has a kark team, hey? Even playing with 2 Bulls trainees.
“Building for the future” is the new Sunday morning excuse!!
Sharks are taking this CC on a canter!!!
20 Jul 2011, 11:48 am
@Cheetah 4 Eva(Cheetah 4 Eva)-39:
Please mention a few! apart from Arno Botha and CJ Stander at the Bulls can’t think of anyone…. they must be eligible to play for the u21′s
20 Jul 2011, 11:51 am
@mxhosa(mxhosa)-42: ungamhoyi wena, ukuba umdlali akaphumi evrystaat lenkewu ayimboneli ntweni.
nangoku ndiyakuthembisa izakuxelela ngabadlali abaphuma kwelaphondo
20 Jul 2011, 12:05 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-43:
Hay’suka! ukuba uzakundixelela ngesa scrumhalf nala flyhalf ye u20, I was not impressed….
Going to the game tomorrow?
20 Jul 2011, 12:11 pm
AC on why Catrakilis is better than Dollie….
“Since Van Aswegen will be out for much longer than expected we [WP] had two ways of addressing the matter,” said Coetzee.
“The one approach was to be conservative and the other was to be aggressive in our selection.
“I’ve had a chance to look at the two players at training and I looked for one that had the ability to run the show along the backline.
“I needed a flyhalf who could give the side direction, make good decisions, make the right [playing] calls as well as holding his own on defence.”
Catrakilis’ goal-kicking ability may have also swung the vote in his favour as Coetzee referred to him the “most accurate place-kicker in our system”.
Coetzee felt that Dollie will have a chance to prove himself again at Currie Cup level but felt Catrakilis was the one to go with for Friday’s game.
“He’s [Dollie] a talented player and it’s my duty to provide him with an opportunity to show what he can do at this [Currie Cup] level,” said Coetzee.
“I also won’t consider bringing in a flyhalf from outside to solve the problem because at WP we want to back our own guys.”

@mxhosa(mxhosa)-44: might go, must look for tickets…
20 Jul 2011, 12:59 pm
@mxhosa(mxhosa)-42:
Marchell van der Merwe/John-Henry Harris (Props)
Michael van Vuuren (Hooker)
JC Astle (Loose Forward)
Carl Wegner (Lock)
Piet Rademan (Scrumhalf)
There you go, and taht’s just from the Cheetahs!
20 Jul 2011, 14:03 pm
@Cheetah 4 Eva(Cheetah 4 Eva)-47:
Do you know who vd Merwe played for in the 2008 Craven Week? besides only two of those players have either superrugby or SA u20,,,,
and you forgot Hendrik vd Walt
20 Jul 2011, 14:27 pm
Yes I do, i know he played for Wp, just saying that there are an abundance of young players ready to step up!
John-Henry Harris Junior Boks 2011
Michael van Vuuren Junior boks 2011
Piet Rademan Junior Boks 2011
JC Astle Junior Boks 2011
Carl Wegner called up to Junior boks 2011 as cover
Johan Goosen Junior Boks 2011
Then you can add Mjekevu, Jaco taute, and paul Jiordaan as well. See many players outside WP
20 Jul 2011, 14:50 pm
BTW… with all the hullaballoo of Sadie and Engelbrecht joining the Bulls… the guy I rated above them all seems to have slipped quietly out of town and joined the Bulls with no fanfare or articles…
Jurgen Visser…!!
How the hell did we let him go…?? it’s not like we have a whole bunch of fullbacks clogging up the game pipe like we do at centre…
Good luck to Visser… One to keep our eyes on…!!!
