Van Zyl makes Italy squad – Former Free State lock Corne van Zyl has been picked in Nick Mallett’s 30-man squad for the 2011 World Cup. Van Zyl has been selected despite the fact that he’s yet to play a Test.
Mallett has also raised some eyebrows by omitting flyhalf Kristopher Burton, with Riccardo Bocchino and Argentine-born Luciano Orquera the No 10s picked in the group.
‘From our point of view, Orquera is the most complete player for the No 10 and Riccardo Bocchino has in these weeks shown great determination and will to mature and be part of the 30,’ said Mallett.
Prop Andrea Lo Cicero and flanker Mauro Bergamasco will both be heading for their fourth World Cup.
‘This group is the result of four years of work,’ said Mallett. ‘We have no doubt that the quarter-finals are within our capabilities.’
Italy will play two warm-up Tests against Japan and Scotland next month.
Italy squad:
Forwards: Martin Castrogiovanni, Andrea Lo Cicero, Lorenzo Cittadini, Salvatore Perugini, Leonardo Ghiraldini, Fabio Ongaro, Tommaso D’Apice, Marco Bortolami, Carlo Antonio Del Fava, Qintin Geldenhuys, Cornelius Van Zyl, Robert Julian Barbieri, Mauro Bergamasco, Paul Derbyshire, Sergio Parisse (captain), Alessandro Zanni.

Apparently he is Anton van Zyl’s twin brother. Fascinating…

I think it is Corniel & not Corne … Was a very decent lock while playing for Cheetahs and competed well with Matfield at the time when cheetahs won the Currie Cup(s)
