Crusaders’ travels to continue in 2012

Officials have confirmed AMI Stadium, the Crusaders’ home ground, isn’t safe to be used in 2012.

The stadium suffered significant structural damage when Christchurch was hit by a devastating earthquake in February. The Crusaders were forced to play home matches in Timaru and Nelson.

Christchurch City Council said the stadium’s long-term future was still being assessed, but was in no doubt that the venue would not host matches next year. ‘At this stage, we can confirm that the stadium will not be available for the 2012 season,’ councillor Sue Wells said.

Wells added the stadium’s Hadlee Stand would most likely be demolished, while solution were being sought in a bid to save three other stands. ‘Engineers are working now to determine the best method of repair and to establish the costs involved,’ Wells said.

No decision is expected before October, but the Christchurch press reports the Crusaders have already enquired about the use of Riccarton racecourse in the suburbs.

There is a possible silver lining here.

The structural engineers might condemn the Deans Stand.

I wonder whether they could be bribed?

This will cost the Crusaders a pile of cash in terms of gate takings.
But they were always extremely good at including their Provincial Partners in their success.
