    The biggest issue I have seen is with players not trusting one another to make the tackle. We have 2, or even 3 guys committing to a tackle, and in the case of SBW, an offload means game-over. It seems to me like the players need to trust one another to hold their lines, and make the tackles they commit to. The Cheetahs did this so well against the Crusaders earlier this year, but other than that, all of our teams have been very poor regarding defending.

    If one player misses a tackle, it’s an individual error, but when gaps start to appear, and 2 or 3 players mark one or two attackers, then the defensive pattern comes into play. Each player needs to know their role, and stick with the pattern.

    I also wonder why it took so long, but rather late than never I suppose.

    Vrede you forget the Boks were fantastic in defence in 2009.
    Niebenaar didn’t take 18 months to get his defensive pattern to work.

    It also doesn’t mean that the Stormers dfensive pattern will be the Boks. It means that he takes what works with the Boks and tweaks it, refines it and brings it up to date.

    what’s more worrying is the complete focus on defense, the point of backline play is to to attack and we better start learning to do that cos defense will not win this RWC, the ABs and Ozzie backlines are simply too good this time around. Defense is important, but our boys MUST also be encouraged to take on their man when they have recieved good ball from the pack.

    They better strike a balance, too conservative and you can forget it, JW was teetering on the brink were it not for EJ in this regard.

    @Michael(mikeybrass)-9: The Bok defence in 2009 was very poor. It was dominance at the breakdown, exclusively through Brussow, and field position that took the sting out of NZ and AUS. At no point under de Villiers has our defence been good. We must have the 9th best defence going into the World Cup. Nienaber may get it right, but there is so little time that it really is cutting it fine! Added to that, we face teams in our pool that can EASILY rip through a weak defence. Fiji, Samoa and Wales can all beat us. So there is no room for experimentation in the pool stages. This is not looking good. Divvy calling in Neinaber and Rassie to overhaul their game systems and tactics on the eve of a World Cup is madness!

    Name the conspicuously poor tacklers: Morne, Adi, Smit, Matfield, Bryan, Aplon, Jannie duP… that’s 7 out of 15. Gaps WILL appear when half the team can’t tackle and have to rely on pack-tackling one ball-carrier.

    2 points. Firstly congratulations to Ryan for accommodating the hearing impaired by signing all his KeoTv offerings. Secondly Ryan has it spot on about defense being the bedrock of test match rugby and it being a bit late a month out to start concentrating on this aspect now.

    Jake White introduced the rush defense immediately and it took a few years before we got it completely right.
    Defense wouldn’t be a major problem if we were scoring tries galore but the fact is that we cannot expect to score 4 or 5 tries against top oppo at the moment we are lucky if we manage 2.
    Our only hope is that the NH refs pick on McCaw and co. like they did at the last world cup.
