Lions to investigate racist attacks

The Golden Lions Rugby Union has confirmed that an investigation has been launched following the alleged racial attacks in a club match at Edenvale.

In a Presdient’s League club match played between Soweto Rugby Club and Panthers on the weekend, half a dozen Soweto players were allegedly attacked by Panthers players and spectators towards the end of the game.

The GLRU has received reports from referees, players and coaches involved in the incident, and will now take the matter further.

‘The union hereby wishes to confirm that it has a clear process that is followed in such matters and that this incident is currently being thoroughly investigated,’ the GLRU said in a statement.

‘The process will encompass, amongst others, the receipt and perusal by Advocate Max Bare which will then, in turn, be submitted to the union’s disciplinary committee as well as a committee for racism and development which will run a parallel process at the same time.’
