Currie Cup latest – Cheetahs won’t risk Juan

Keo.co.za brings you news from the Currie Cup.

Cheetahs won’t risk Juan – The Cheetahs have decided not to risk Juan Smith against the Pumas this weekend as he was left out of their match 22.

The Springboks released the hardman to the Cheetahs on Monday, with the hopes he could make his return to rugby after a long Achilles injury lay off. However, Naka Drotske has decided not to include Smith after several fitness tests this week.

Cheetahs – 15 Riaan Smit, 14 Philip Snyman, 13 Robert Ebersohn, 12 Corné Uys, 11 Ryno Benjamin, 10 Sias Ebersohn, 9 Tewis de Bruyn, 8 Boom Prinsloo, 7 Pieter Labuschagne, 6 Johan Wessels, 5 Izak van der Westhuizen, 4 Francois Uys, 3 WP Nel, 2 Adriaan Strauss (captain), 1 Coenie Oosthuizen.
Replacements: 16 Hercu Liebenberg, 17 Marcel van der Merwe, 18 Ockert van Zyl, 19 Pieter Myburgh, 20 Enrico Acker, 21 Johan Goosen, 22 Philip Burger.

Joubert in, Terblanche out – John Plumtree has decided to rest Stefan Terblanche as Marius Joubert slots in at outside centre against the Leopards this weekend.

Scrumhalf Charl McLeod and skipper Keegan Daniel also feature on the bench while Conrad Hoffmann and Jacques Botes start in their places respectively. Botes also takes over the captaincy for the clash in Durban.

Sharks – 15 Louis Ludik, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Marius Joubert, 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 Sibusiso Sithole, 10 Frederic Michalak, 9 Conrad Hoffmann, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Marcell Coetzee, 6 Jacques Botes (c), 5 Ross Skeate, 4 Anton Bresler, 3 Wiehahn Herbst, 2 Craig Burden, 1 Dale Chadwick.
Subs: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Eugene van Staden, 18 Alistair Hargreaves, 19 Keegan Daniel, 20 Charl McLeod, 21 Adrian Jacobs, 22 Stefan Terblanche.

Bok duo on WP bench – Allister Coetzee has added Gio Aplon and Juan de Jongh on the WP bench for the match against the Lions this weekend.

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers released the players on Tuesday afternoon after they were not included in his match 22 for the Test against the All Blacks. After Coetzee received the late call, he decided to name the duo on the bench as they have not spent any time with the team since they left for Bok duties.

WP – 15 Conrad Jantjes, 14 Danie Poolman, 13 Johann Sadie, 12 Tim Whitehead, 11 JJ Engelbrecht, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Dewaldt Duvenage, 8 Nick Koster, 7 Siya Kolisi, 6 Pieter Louw, 5 De Kock Steenkamp, 4 Hilton Lobberts, 3 Brok Harris, 2 Deon Fourie (c), 1 Steven Kitshoff.
Subs: 16 Tiaan Liebenberg, 17 Frans Malherbe, 18 Quinn Roux, 19 Nick Fenton-Wells, 20 Nic Groom, 21 Juan de Jongh, 22 Gio Aplon.

Bulls rope in Chiliboy – Bulls coach Pine Pienaar has made a late change to his match 22, with Chiliboy Ralepelle named on the bench for the game against Griquas this weekend.

Ralepelle was called up to the Springbok squad earlier this week to provide cover for injury concern John Smit. But with the Bok skipper named on the bench for the All Blacks Test, Ralepelle replaces Willie Wepener amongst the Bulls reserves.

Bulls (revised) – 15 Jurgen Visser, 14 Akona Ndungane, 13 Zane Kirchner, 12 Wynand Olivier, 11 Bjorn Basson, 10 Louis Fouche, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 CJ Stander, 7 Warwick Tecklenburg, 6 Arno Botha, 5 Juandr Kruger, 4 Flip van der Merwe, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Gary Botha (c), 1 Dean Greyling.
Subs: 16 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 17 Rossouw de Klerk, 18 Gerrit-Jan van Velze, 19 Jono Ross, 20 Dustin Jinka, 21 Marnitz Boshoff, 22 Francois Venter.

    @Sasuke(Sasuke)-4:

Looks average. They aren’t going to the play-offs! And think they’re looking at Wilhelm Steenkamp as their future at 5 :) Also JJ Engelbrecht has reason to be angry if they don’t play him ahead of Gerhard van den Heever.

It’s amazing how so many people , like the post above, are quick to say the only reason the Lions are top is because they have their Super 15 team playing CC. Not once during that tournament did i hear anyone say after beating the Lions that it “was only their CC team playing in the Super 15.” Each province puts out the best they can each weekend and it just so happens that while many Bulls, WP and Sharks players are disgracing the Bok jersey, the Lions are getting on with building a team worth watching!!

@wade(wade)-7: Now dont get your panties in a bunch!

If you do not realise that those three teams you mentioned are not having all the best players to their disposal, you know nothing about rugby. I am one to believe it is not the players fault for dismal performanes, but lack of coaching and expertise in the clown box…. there is enough talent in the bok squad to win a world cup!

However, there is some responsibility towards players to not make stupid errors like they did on Saturdey. droppin balls and knocking on…. just not on.
Lastly, I hate this excuse AC is throwing our Wp fans that he is building in the CC towards the S15.. fackoff I say.. Fisrt win the CC and that should be sufficient building for the S15…. Baby Steps Ac.. We have not won the CC for 10 years now!! Why play if you are not there to win???

WP have some serious talent in the midfield, but they should be shaded in all other departments on Friday. Even the midfield will be hotly contested, with Hollenbach and Mapoe (in his new outside centre role) in top form recently. We’ll miss Waylon, but not as much as I had feared. And soon Doppies will be back. Oh happy days.

Elton Jantjes is going to give that little Greek a valuable lesson in flyhalf play. Hope he takes notes.

so its WP Vodacom Cup vs Super Rugby Lions! all of a sudden all Lions players looking like Legends and Mitch like the best coach in rugby history! Not good for Currie Cup Rugby — very low standard. This could be the k@kkest team ever in SA rugby history to win the Currie Cup! sad indeed!

yeah… happy days for you… you’ve been one of the longest suffering and loyal lion’s fans on this site… when most of the others disappeared you fronted up week in week out, year in year out…

it’s good to have the roar back in the lions…

so… enjoy your happy days… you and they both deserve it…!!

@Desmond_Tiete(p0ppa69)-10: Ill bet my bottom dollar they will not win the CC! One simple reason.. They played the lower ranked teams in the first five rounds… (Yeah I rate the bulls lower rank team Heheheh)

So I believe their first good contest will be against the sharks. Thye will whip Ac stupid game plan as the lions favours running the ball and playing the situation… Wp are instructed to kick all day and play defensively the whole game and wait for mistakes… I hate it!!!

But round 2 will be more of a test to them when most boks are back that did not make the 30 man squad en in semi final time all the boks will be back from losing the QF.. heheheh

@>^..^< katman(katman)-9: mapoe looked to be having a great game last week – the little i saw of it. but he played there for the cheetahs and was found wanting on defence, hopefully mitch has worked on that as defence can be learnt.

  • 14.HHS: Reply to this comment

@Provvas(Provvas)-12: You call that Cheetahs team lower ranked? Looking at the Cheetahs team sheet that was their S15 team as well. Thumbs up….

    @>^..^< katman(katman)-9:

our (WP) star of the midfield is proving to be Tim Whitehead… IMO…

Sadie again reverted to being selfish with ball in hand, ran across the field and didn’t pass… He needs to learn to run straight and pass the damn ball… Whitehead is distributing well, defending like crazy and marshalling the line… he will grow into the midfield general role as he gains more confidence…

So the lions winning streak will come to an end comes Friday night.

@HHS(Hop Hop Spinnekop)-14: Did you not see that I did not mention the Cheaters in there? I said I rate the bulls as a lower rank team.. not the cheaters…
They are the only decent team thelions faced so far…

Province will be tough this weekend, but ultimately their coach is my lack of belief that they can beat the lions…
The sharks will be too good for them…
In the second round the lions will ose to the sharks, the Cheetahs in Bloem, and possibly Wp in Hillbrow….

  • 18.>^..^< katman: Reply to this comment

@Provvas(Provvas)-12: Hey tottie, those “lower ranked teams” included Griquas (who hammered the Sharks and drew with WP), Vrystaat (who beat Province at home) and the Bulls (who beat the high flying Cheetahs). So run that logic by me again?

  • 19.HHS: Reply to this comment

@Provvas(Provvas)-17: “They played the lower ranked teams in the first five rounds” this include the Cheetahs.
Yes, friday will be tough but I think the weather will make it close one. I think the reason the Lions is playing so is because of their loosies. Beardface, Minnie and Baywatch is schooling everyone atm. I hope you are wrong about your 2 round prediction. I think the Lions will get better…. no team goes to Kimberly and put 40 against the Griquas, even with your S15 players in them, just a thought.

@>^..^< katman(katman)-18: Historically the Griekwas is one of the smaller unions.. they will possible be out of the next CC!! Tottie!!
And like I said in the previous post.. the Cheetahs is the only good side the lions faced.

The way I look at it: The Traditional bigger unions all should beat the Pumas, Leopards, and Griekwas. Then they normally figth it out amongst themselves….

Wp Drew the Griekwas which puts them at a disadvantage…. Same goes for not scoring 4 tries against these unions….. Lions just did what should be done.. and that is beat hte minnows (Which is those three teams) and then they beat the bulls who I believe is like the minnows as they struggle to beat the Pumas…..

Just my assessment.. not the law…..

@Provvas(Provvas)-21: Wel, you seem to put the “***” in assessment.

    @Sasuke(Sasuke)-4: they’ve dropped boshof too :D

“Having already tried (and, it seems, failed) to run Francois Brummer into a dependable flyhalf option over the course of three seasons, the Bulls appeared to have finally given up the experiment in naming Marnitz Boshoff at pivot for last week’s clash against the Pumas. His rise to glory was short-lived, it seems, with youngster Louis Fouche set to be the third starting flyhalf in as many weeks against Griquas.”

@Provvas(Provvas)-8: the only Bulls missing from their CC team is Hougie, Spies and Steyn … add these Boks to their team for this weekends match and they still end up losing to the Griqua’s … that’s right a Bully team missing only 3 super players loses to a CC team.

@Transformation(Transformation)-23: Burton Francis is better than all of them.

The lions are looking good, but I have to agree with fake poppa, only butch missing from super rugby and they still not invincible, lions will have to work hard to beat wp at home

  • 31.Michael: Reply to this comment

@RL(RL)-28: Hougie, Spies, FdP, Steyn, Matfield, Botha, Gurtho; they are the spine of the team.

I don’t like seeing the Bulls in disarray for the sake of Bok rugby. As a WP supporter on the other hand, I sure as hell do! :-)
