MARK KEOHANE, in Business Day Newspaper, writes the Boks gained more the battle in Nelspruit. Rather a scrap than a sensational effort against a courageous but limited Scotland. The Springbok coaching staff gained more because of the struggle against Scotland and there certainly won’t be complacency against Samoa. South African rugby supporters tend to be reactionary and very different in their reactions every weekend. When New Zealand struggled to beat France in the first Test in Auckland and South Africa were brilliant in patches against Italy many on social networks expressed confidence ... The Bulls are South Africa's best team and they proved it in Bloemfontein. The Cheetahs have been outstanding all season and they were as good on Saturday night as they have been at any stage. Still it wasn't good enough to beat the Bulls, who won 30-25 after leading 30-13 with 10 minutes to play. The Cheetahs finished brilliantly and deserved the bonus point, but the Bulls consolidated their top two league placing thanks to an imposing first hour. Pierre Spies was impressive as team and pack leader, Arno Botha was ever present and the No 9, 10, 12 Bulls axis of Francois Hougaard, Morne ... Read Article11 Jun 2013
Brendan Venter's appointment as Sharks Director of Rugby is a good one. But the decision to end John Plumtree's Sharks coaching tenure is not. Former Springbok and Italy coach Nick Mallett turned down an invitation for the role of Sharks Director of Rugby and Venter, formerly the head coach and Director of Rugby at Saracens, will start his job at the outset of the Currie Cup season. Plumtree remains the Super Rugby head coach until the end of this season's tournament but his contract has not been renewed. Plumtree is highly rated in Europe and will in all likelihood link up with a European ... Read Article8 Jun 2013
Rene Ranger was among the few highlights in New Zealand's 23-13 win against France in Auckland. The All Blacks led 17-10 at half time but France dominated field position for most of the match and enjoyed the greater quality in possession. However they couldn't translate the advantage in the set phase and at the breakdown into points. New Zealand defended well in a match of poor quality. France lead early through Wesley Fofana's try and it took Ben Smith's break to start up New Zealand's international season. Smith has been the form New Zealand back in Super Rugby and he looked a class ... Read Article27 May 2013
Kiwi Vern Cotter is Scotland's new head coach. Cotter will only take up the position in a year's time. He will see out his contact with French club Clermont. Cotter's appointment means that New Zealanders will coach Scotland, Ireland (Joe Schmidt) and Wales (Warren Gatland). New Zealander Robbie Deans has been at the helm of Australia for the last five years and current Blues coach John Kirwan coached Italy and Japan. Kiwi coaches have also been at the helm of Samoa and Fiji in recent years. Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article17 Aug 2011

@I am a stormer(I am a stormer)-192:
If there’s 3 backs on the bench, you’ll have Butch or Morne depending who’s starting, Hougaard, and it would then make sense to have JdJ.
Might be better to have the fight out between Lambie and Butch for FH, but Div will have Morne in the mix somewhere. No doubt whatsoever.
Catch you later mate. Gotta shoot for a while.

@Sheriff(Sheriff)-193: As long as they respect the red and white, I don’t give a shet who they are.

To cater for most, we could have in the squad:
SH: FDP & Hougaard
FH: Butch & M Steyn
12: JDV & Lambie
13: Jaque & JDJ
FB: Frans Steyn & Aplon.
Oops. No Ruan. Sadly, there are only so many places available.

which poephol do u know will spend all of his money on a promise of ownership?
when it came to the crux the verkrampte gemors that have run that union down for years resisted change!
mtn would’ve never associated itself with the lions if it wasn’t for gumede

sorry my sunshine – shows you are hiding something.
16 Aug 2011, 22:41 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-215: He is a moegoe. And he bailed out because no one there shared his dream of a pan African “all black” rugby franchise. Surprise surprise. If he is so keen on this whack plan, why doesn’t he back the EP Kings? Surely this hot spring of black talent is the ideal place for him to realise his Malcolm X rugby dream.
16 Aug 2011, 22:42 pm
Guys I need some assistance here.
I quite like the concept of ‘keoTV’ – was not here a few years back
Has Simon ever done a recording?

Big fan of Appels myself
However, I feel they – ABs and Aus – target him and unfortunately his team mates do not always cover for him
Great with ball in hand, however I need him to finish more often

yes, he is a moegoe…but so are the people he tried to work with…

@we have it on good authority that on september 11, a legend will rise…(i_love_u_bakkiesbotha)-223: You’re right, they are. And two moegoes only make a moegoemoegoe.
16 Aug 2011, 22:52 pm
i still say ep married to transvaal is the way to go. they could alternate their base camp every season and for a bonus would have a great name…the lion-kings…
16 Aug 2011, 22:54 pm
@we have it on good authority that on september 11, a legend will rise…(i_love_u_bakkiesbotha)-225: Alternatively, The Kings of Lion.
But cool names aside, it’s a very kak idea. Hope you’re sufficiently embarrassed.
16 Aug 2011, 22:54 pm
Still waiting on mpundulu’s reply on my question on 12′s
I need to say that my soccer knowledge has improved by more than 100%; coming off a low base of course
So soon I will be able to hold my own there as well
It’s just the positions thing that I’m not getting
16 Aug 2011, 22:55 pm
@Sheriff(Sheriff)-218:
I was actually introduced to Simon…..he was eating a sandwich at his desk at the time!!
Better looking than Keo and does not have a ‘funny accent’ like Ryan!!

watching this french u18 vs sa academy……
the days when sa kids were physically superior has long gone.
our guys are getting manhandled.
bit of a worry for our future.
and with that negative note………………………..
cheers all – logging off.
16 Aug 2011, 22:59 pm
@carol(carol)-228:
Yes but Simon would not have hit on you, or did he?
Ryan does not have a funny accent. Ryan is the Herschelle Gibbs of keo, but I like the fact that he is just being himself.
I’ll still have a gatsby with him…

16 Aug 2011, 23:06 pm
@carol(carol)-228:
Have I confused you?
16 Aug 2011, 23:08 pm
@Sheriff(Sheriff)-212: i just think helen’s point, whatever it was, disappeared and she was ‘romanticised’ and when i quizzed her original thought all i got was how i wipe my a_ss and how stupid i am for not seeing that rassie & nienaber were going implement this stormers defence that impenetrable. i never got an answer on the dynamics of how all of this was going to happen, nothing.
but hey she ostensibly made an impression here
16 Aug 2011, 23:08 pm
@carol(carol)-228:
“Better looking than Keo”…wow, i cant imagine who should be more offended by that if they read the posts at all…keo or john?…
16 Aug 2011, 23:13 pm
Ok I agree with Mark about this because both coaches know their starting 15′s by now, the boks knew theirs at the end of the EOYT, as have the all blacks for a long time. This cannot be put down to experimenting..
If SA and NZ do meet in the RWC and with everyone whos available now still not injured the teams would look like this:
15 Francois Steyn
14 JP Pietersen
13 Jaque Fourie
12 Jean De Villiers
11 Bryan Habana
10 Butch James
9 Fourie Du Preez
8 Pierre Spies
7 Juan Smith
6 Schalk Burger
5 Victor Matfield
4 Bakkies Botha
3 Jannie du Plessis
2 John Smit
1 Tendai Mtawarira
16 Bismark Du Plessis
17 Gurthro Steenkamp
18 Danie Russouw
19 Heinrich Brussouw
20 Francois Hougaard
21 Morne Steyn / Patrick Lambie
22 Gio Aplon / Juan De Jongh
V
15 Mils Muliaina
14 Cory Jane
13 Conrad Smith
12 Ma’a Nonu
11 Sitiveni Sivivatu
10 Daniel Carter
9 Jimmy Cowan
8 Kieran Read
7 Richie McCaw
6 Jerome Kaino
5 Ali Williams
4 Brad Thorn
3 Owen Franks
2 Keven Mealamu
1 Tony Woodcock
16 Andrew Hore
17 Ben Franks
18 Sam Whitelock
19 Liam Messam
20 Piri Weepu
21 Colin Slade / Israel Dagg / Zac Guilford
22 Sonny Bill Williams
The boks need to perform or they will be winless in the tri nations and face a Wales side which showed that when it truly matters they can defend like a champion team.

@I am a stormer(I am a stormer)-211:
You could look at it this way:
SH: FDP / Pienaar
FH: Butch / Steyn
11: Habana / Hougaard
12: JDV / Lambie
13: Fourie / JDJ
14: JP / Mvovo
15: F Steyn / Aplon

@keo(keo)-28: “Disgusting that they see fit to drop the Bok game to bt the Wallabies in Brisbane (as those 8 will all be available for last test) … disgusting on our part because they rate the Wobblies higher than us”
Because it is exactly so, like it or not. Unless Boks themselves start to treat voyages seriously.
On a positive note, those B+ Blacks are more than capable to pull Boks pants down, unlike those examples of “vast pool of talents” sent to the slaughter.

@Helen(Helen)-145:
An opensider is not about making turnovers. It is about slowing down the ruck ball so that your defensive line can realign and that you stifle the opposition of a quick recycle.
In other words, it is about attempting a steal or making it difficult for the tackled player (in the air or on the ground) to place or offload the ball and the supporting players to support the tackled player.
Come ruck or collision time, the deck player (I don’t like the word fetcher) also needs to help structure the ruck on defense or offense, and it helps to have a low center of gravity here as it is very difficult to counterruck a player with a low center of gravity.
Otherwise you are entering the vicious circle where you are just going to make tackle after tackle and the opposition ruck ball just gets quicker and quicker. And not even the best tacklers in the world (which Burger certainly falls under) can save you from this.

@willievz(willievz)-168: Willie, you forget that it is the second player at the breakdown who performs this function and his job is made easier when the opposition is tackled aggressively, either backwards or being turned…

16 Aug 2011, 13:58 pm
@Helen(Helen)-182: Where did I forget this?
Why can’t your 6 be the second guy at the ruck?
And in any case, you will not have the same player attending consecutive rucks anyways.
The trick for the opensider is to cherry pick the collision he enters, it is about anticipating which phase in general or collision in particular there is a chance to slow down or potentially poach the ball.
Which is why having Bismarck and Brussow (and Burger to a lesser extent) helps tremendously.

Huh?
The three 80-min players should not be subbed at all, barring injury.
Which means there are 12 players instead of 15 who should be subject to being subbed, of which (as you rightly state) only 7 can be subbed.

@willievz(willievz)-217: Willie, let me explain something. You can’t have only 3 players playing the full 80 mins. With 7 subs, that means that you need 8 players to play the full 80. Do the math, it’s not that difficult.

Hold your horses there. You either misinterpreted what I said, or are looking for fun, or are trying to pick a fight because I disagree with you about Schalk and now you are trying to get me involved in a ping-pong exchange of posts.
So consider this my final response to you.
By 80-minute players I meant that those are the guys I don’t want to get subbed, ever.
Of course I know there are 8 players who would need to play the whole 80.
So on that note, adios.

Interesting. So still 3 days to the game, but hands down, the boks have got the game won.
Personally, I think probably the boks will probably get up in a close encounter, but the last 20 mins might change that, I certainly don’t think anything is set in stone for this match. What the ABs lack in experience, the should make for in skill and fitness levels and a determination to win and a pride in the jersey that used to be part of the bok mindset as well.
Just remember, it just that sort of pride that cometh before a fall.
17 Aug 2011, 03:13 am
@Black Magic(Black Magic)-248:
Just as long as its the ABs learning that very same lesson. Im wondering whether Lord Ted will be toooooo worried about a Loss to the A-Boks as it would give him some focus-points heading in to the Cup, as the HK-Bledisloe did prior to Eden Park’11.
Altho, beating the Boks on home turf – where the ABs have never won (under Home Refs) – would certainly come with deep satisfaction too.
