Jean de Villiers will be given the rest of the week to recover in time to face Samoa in Pretoria. Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer wants his captain to lead the side in the Boks final international of the month. If De Villiers does not recover from the chest injury, Jan Serfontein will start at inside centre. Morne Steyn again starts ahead of Pat Lambie. Willem Alberts will also be given the next 48 hours to prove his fitness. Adriaan Strauss retains the run on No 2 jersey while Bismarck du Plessis is nursed back after nine months out of the game. Boks - 15. Willie le Roux, 14. Bryan ... Read Article1 Jun 2013
The Bulls are South Africa's best team and they proved it in Bloemfontein. The Cheetahs have been outstanding all season and they were as good on Saturday night as they have been at any stage. Still it wasn't good enough to beat the Bulls, who won 30-25 after leading 30-13 with 10 minutes to play. The Cheetahs finished brilliantly and deserved the bonus point, but the Bulls consolidated their top two league placing thanks to an imposing first hour. Pierre Spies was impressive as team and pack leader, Arno Botha was ever present and the No 9, 10, 12 Bulls axis of Francois Hougaard, Morne ... Read Article11 Jun 2013
Brendan Venter's appointment as Sharks Director of Rugby is a good one. But the decision to end John Plumtree's Sharks coaching tenure is not. Former Springbok and Italy coach Nick Mallett turned down an invitation for the role of Sharks Director of Rugby and Venter, formerly the head coach and Director of Rugby at Saracens, will start his job at the outset of the Currie Cup season. Plumtree remains the Super Rugby head coach until the end of this season's tournament but his contract has not been renewed. Plumtree is highly rated in Europe and will in all likelihood link up with a European ... Read Article8 Jun 2013
Rene Ranger was among the few highlights in New Zealand's 23-13 win against France in Auckland. The All Blacks led 17-10 at half time but France dominated field position for most of the match and enjoyed the greater quality in possession. However they couldn't translate the advantage in the set phase and at the breakdown into points. New Zealand defended well in a match of poor quality. France lead early through Wesley Fofana's try and it took Ben Smith's break to start up New Zealand's international season. Smith has been the form New Zealand back in Super Rugby and he looked a class ... Read Article27 May 2013
Kiwi Vern Cotter is Scotland's new head coach. Cotter will only take up the position in a year's time. He will see out his contact with French club Clermont. Cotter's appointment means that New Zealanders will coach Scotland, Ireland (Joe Schmidt) and Wales (Warren Gatland). New Zealander Robbie Deans has been at the helm of Australia for the last five years and current Blues coach John Kirwan coached Italy and Japan. Kiwi coaches have also been at the helm of Samoa and Fiji in recent years. Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article17 Aug 2011

@Dawn(Dawn)-500: wasn’t that Langenhoven?
17 Aug 2011, 22:40 pm
His testicle is not big enough for deep penetration.
That’s why he need Extra.
17 Aug 2011, 22:42 pm
@WP Till I Die(WP-Forever)-499: he was a pioneer of the undercover movement, sadly no one else listened
@Dawn(Dawn)-500: ah yes, as he was walking past on his way to invent the wheel.
we owe him so much.
17 Aug 2011, 22:43 pm
Juan Smith confirmed out of the RWC, what a blow for us
17 Aug 2011, 22:44 pm
@Dawn(Dawn)-502: actually i had a crack there but i refuse to discuss another mans testes
17 Aug 2011, 22:45 pm
@JL1(JL1)-504: seriously?
where did you read that jl1?
17 Aug 2011, 22:46 pm
Langenhoven, testicle, two sides of the same sorry pseudo socialist mysoginist coin.
17 Aug 2011, 22:47 pm
so far, out of the rustenburg 21, alberts, juan, bekker and schalk are confirmed walking wounded.
so its down to 17 our kiwi pals.
17 Aug 2011, 22:49 pm
add guthro who hasnt played in months and you are down to 16.
now how many abs arent travelling?
hmm.
kiwi FARCE.
17 Aug 2011, 22:49 pm
@JL1(JL1)-504: Massive blow. Our chances to defend the trophy just took a major hit.
17 Aug 2011, 22:52 pm
Thankfully we have Alberts to take his place.
Spies (if he keeps up his recent good form)
Alberts
Brussow
is a very well balanced trio.
17 Aug 2011, 22:52 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-508: Announced on Sport24, now confirmed
@willievz(willievz)-510: Nt yet the end of the world, but close, very close
If John Smit sustains such a big injury then it is tickets for sure
17 Aug 2011, 22:53 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-511: Yes, but Aberts is not Lapa Lips love child like Spies and Burger
17 Aug 2011, 22:54 pm
Yup, it’s official, Juan Smith is out of the RWC.
17 Aug 2011, 22:55 pm
@JL1(JL1)-512: that is terrible news.
bekker and now juan?
both big men who have wonderful skills.
in fact, juan was my bok player of the tournament in 2007 rwc and is probably my favourite bok.
very bad news.
17 Aug 2011, 22:57 pm
if pdv insists on playing danie at 7 then we may as well not bother honestly.
but in alberts and deysel we have capable replacements (no one can replace juan, let me make that clear right now)
17 Aug 2011, 22:57 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-515: That is one of the reason why our Boks cannot do all these Sper games plus Currie Cup plus Tri Nations
They train and play in more contact situations than the ABs and the Wallabies
SA Rugby players clock more miles on their bodies due to this
17 Aug 2011, 22:59 pm
agreed, Danie Rossouw is no longer good enough for flank and in Mostert we have a better number 4 lock replacement anyway.
17 Aug 2011, 22:59 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-516: Neither Deysel nor Alberts provide Lapa Lip with a line out option, Alberts maybe, but Deysel not, and Deysel is one dimensional
Alberts is good
17 Aug 2011, 23:00 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-518: Mostert played 2 games
1 he was good
The second one we cannot judge, so I am baffled to understand what you base your comment on
17 Aug 2011, 23:01 pm
Deysel is already in the Bok mix and will now no doubt be a squad member at RWC. He is very, very good as a blind side but I would def start with Fat Alberts at 7.
17 Aug 2011, 23:02 pm
@JL1(JL1)-520: Because Dinosaur Rossouw is old and slow and has butterfingers, and Flippie is injured.
17 Aug 2011, 23:03 pm
@JL1(JL1)-519: nah, deysel is a cracker and a tall bugger to boot but ja, alberts is a better lineout option.
ja, the rustenburg camp was great, screw the anzacs.
17 Aug 2011, 23:05 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-522: Mostert is not better at 4 than Danie, imo
17 Aug 2011, 23:06 pm
@JL1(JL1)-520: danie looked disinterested overseas and lacklustre in sa.
he is no longer a loosie but as a 4 option, maybe.
17 Aug 2011, 23:07 pm
This changes everything.
Such an important lineout option and impact at the collision. Impossible to replace IMO.
I can see why Div has gone for Danie as a replacement, but I have my reservations about him at 7 like many bloggers here.
However, in Juan’s confirmed absence, I will not start Alberts. I will use Alberts solely as an impact player because that is where he is adding the most value.
The best man to start in the 7 jumper is now arguably Schalk.
So Brussow, Schalk and Spies it is.
17 Aug 2011, 23:07 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-521: So then we have a full team of fatties
Phat Smit
Phat Steyn
Phat Alberts
Now we just need Phat Ricky and watch them fight over the Krispy Kreem Donuts
17 Aug 2011, 23:08 pm
@JL1(JL1)-524: its a little too late to be fiddling with 4 options imo.
mostert is a rookie of a rookie and flip is not far better.
i guess hargreaves will be on the plane if he recovers.
very poor planning imo.
17 Aug 2011, 23:10 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-525: Yes at 4 as back up, what about Davon Raubenheimer, seems thatbhe has developed since the EOYT of a year or two ago?
Elstad would also be a proper trench war soldier, play him at seven
17 Aug 2011, 23:11 pm
Hargreaves has disappointed this season…
Rossouw looked very disinterested. For a such a big guy he has always suffered from losing the ball in the tackle a little too often than should be expected. And last Saturday either Elsom or Pocock (can’t remember which) ran around him – can’t have a carthorse on the side of the scrum.
17 Aug 2011, 23:14 pm
@willievz(willievz)-526: funnily enough that will be one helluva backrow, in fact it might just be the only way brussow is included as a starter since schalk would always have started at 6 had juan been fit.
not a bad option for a griquas fan.
17 Aug 2011, 23:15 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-528: Yes and Hargreaves will not hurt a fly, big mistake
17 Aug 2011, 23:17 pm
andres iniesta you beaut!!!
Hard luck Juan
17 Aug 2011, 23:17 pm
@willievz(willievz)-526: …and that is what it will be
Excellent trio!
Chaser, fetcher, carrier, link all of the above
17 Aug 2011, 23:19 pm
@JL1(JL1)-529: raubenheimer is playing fantastic rugby.
how this guy hasnt stepped up to s15 is beyond me.
elstadt is ok, a 7 i agree but i think it is a bit late to start talking wc for these guys.
maybe davon as he has been in the mix, play him in the pool games?
17 Aug 2011, 23:20 pm
Agreed on that trio Willie. Alberts as an impact player is arguably a better use of his skills.
That’s if Schalk can be convinced to play 7…
17 Aug 2011, 23:20 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-533: dont bring those roundballers here when we are mourning for juan please.
17 Aug 2011, 23:21 pm
always somehow knew Juan weren’t gonna make it.. its actually a blessing in disguise.. his body was too over worked and its far better he don’t try stretch the extra mile in vain..
Now what is necessary is for John Smit to see the reality writing ON THE WALL and QUIT before he sinks the team any further than he has already.
17 Aug 2011, 23:21 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-536: schalk will play where the coach needs him.
he is no prima donna.
17 Aug 2011, 23:22 pm
football schmootball.
roundball fagball.
17 Aug 2011, 23:22 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-539: oh really but we are told that’s why Luke left
17 Aug 2011, 23:24 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-536: Lapa Lip will check with Schalks dad
@Transformation(Transformation)-533: Sow some respect, Juan is 100 times a round ball player can only dream of being
@rangerman(rangerman)-535: Yes, it is too late for trying things. Davon Raubenheimer is really good this year, not that he was not in the past
17 Aug 2011, 23:24 pm
@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-538: ho hum, here comes the mon key.
17 Aug 2011, 23:25 pm
Damn that is a big blow. Definitely if PDV goes with Danie as the replacement 7 its going to be a huge balls up. Burger is probably the best replacement at the moment, Not sure about Alberts for a full 80- Deysel good backup to have but hasnt had enough big test game time to be thrown in the deep end at the WC. Dammit. Either way we have some big blokes just please not Danie ffs. Play him at 4 but nowhere else.
17 Aug 2011, 23:26 pm
leave the bananas in the cupboard…
17 Aug 2011, 23:26 pm
@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-538: John Smit, blah blah blah blah blah, yadda, yadda, yadda, yadda
17 Aug 2011, 23:27 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-541: who cares why he left?
not me.
i hope he is happy.
@JL1(JL1)-542: davon has a lot of potential, man he is a powerful kid.
17 Aug 2011, 23:27 pm
Schalk is all show and not much substance.. Alberts far better, Deysel or Alberts before Schalk.. Schalk better as impact off bench.. If Schalk starts much like Smit starting… all show but little reward.
Vermeulen is better than Schalk at 8 and Alberts or Deysel better than Schalk at 7, but 7 is still better position for Schalk than 6 or 8.
Schalk and / or Spies off bench.
8. Vermeulen / Spies
7. Deysel / Alberts
6. Brussow
5. Matfield / Roussow
4. Bakkies / Mostert
3. Jannie / CJ
2. Bismark / Chili / Strauss
1. Beast / Greyling / Gurthro
17 Aug 2011, 23:30 pm
@JL1(JL1)-546: Seems you need to lose another 10 from 11 games before you ever see the light… how stupefied blind you still wanna be … yadda yadda hail hero worshiping imbecile
17 Aug 2011, 23:30 pm
i think alberts will be great at 7 though.
he is a monster and i think he was slightly overplayed by the sharks leading to a tapering off of his game over the last few months.
he has had a rest now
