Massive blow for Boks

Massive blow for Boks

Juan Smith is out of the World Cup.

Smith sustained an Achilles injury during the Cheetahs’ Super Rugby campaign and has been in a race to regain fitness ever since. However, on Wednesday an emotional Smith confirmed to the Volksblad that he was withdrawing himself from the squad.

‘I am not 100%,’ Smith said. ‘I won’t be able to give everything and realise I should put my team, team-mates and the Bok fans first. I must stop lying to myself – what I’ve been doing these last three weeks – and realise that I’m not ready.’

The 30-year-old flank conceded that he has trained through considerable pain in recent weeks in the hope of representing the Springboks at his third World Cup. ‘The pain level that I have been practising with was seven out of ten,’ he explained. ‘I really cannot describe how disappointed I am…immensely.’

Smith has been central to the Springboks’ success in the last eight years, his powerful ball carrying and physical defence lending immense impetus to their cause. Springboks coach Peter de Villiers has consistently expressed fears about losing him and now has to attempt to fill the huge void he leaves.

De Villiers has intimated that Danie Rossouw will be the player to step in in the event of Smith’s unavailability. He isn’t short of talented options outside of the Bulls man, with Willem Alberts and Jean Deysel competent replacements. He could also opt to use Schalk Burger in the position, combining him with Heinrich Brussow and Pierre Spies in the back row.

I knew ALL Cab’s phrases and have never spoken Zulu ever. Not all that much difference among all those mere regional dialects. What much more than the clicks separates the two regional dialects?

Who even cares about a regional language when in a foreign country.

    Certainly not me.

Digging deeper holes to sell the game
DAVID LONG Last updated 12:52 17/08/2011

OPINION: There will be Champagne corks popping at the offices of adidas this morning.

They’ll be relieved that they’re no longer the All Blacks sponsor everyone loves to hate and they can now happily – and quietly – get on with their business of charging extortionate money for All Blacks jerseys and forcing their coloured boots on our players.

Telecom’s “Abstain for the All Blacks” campaign has rightly been slammed by all and sundry. It’s a terrible idea and will have Kiwis mocked around the world if it goes ahead.

Not surprisingly Graham Henry and the All Blacks players saw sense and refused to have any part in the advertising campaign.

It’s unfortunate that the players have become the gate keepers to some of the ridiculous ideas exploiting our most famous brand.

They are the ones who’ve refused to allow the haka to become a marketing gimmick and thankfully, they see the black jersey for what it is, a symbol of New Zealand, that belongs to all of New Zealand.

Already we have seen Coca Cola launch that ridiculous online book where people can leave messages of support to the All Blacks.

Does anyone in their right mind think Owen Franks is going to read Sandra from Palmerston North say “Go Abs we’re all proud of you”?

There is the awful Coca Cola’s “unsung heroes of New Zealand” campaign where Josh Kronfeld and TV personality Drew Neemia (no, I’d never heard of him before either) scour the country to find Kiwis who’ve done great things for their communities and give them World Cup tickets.

Other terrible ideas from the past have been the painting of the All Blacks on Air New Zealand planes, having DNA from the players put into posters and bits of mud from grounds around the country put into test tubes and presented to the players.

For the vast majority of these campaigns – and Abstain for the All Blacks is the worst example of this yet – it’s about multi million dollar companies wanting to be seen as being one of us.

They like us, they’ll be cheering the All Blacks on at the World Cup and give out a ‘we’re all in this together’ message.

But the New Zealand public are smart enough not to be fooled by all of this.

They know when a corporation is trying to force an unnatural emotion on the country.

Like calling the Westpac Stadium in Wellington the Cake Tin, it’s something that evolved and no matter how disappointed Westpac may be about this, it will always be known as the Cake Tin.

Yes, big corporation, give your money to the NZRU, but don’t pretend you’re one of us.

The trouble is that the NZRU get stuck in the middle when their sponsors come under flak.
They have to show their support to sponsors when they’re in the firing line, even though they may cringe privately.

So please Telecom, drop this stupid campaign before New Zealand becomes the laughing stock of the world.

Having *** or not won’t have any impact on whether we win the World Cup.

Scoring more – on the field – will have far more to do with it.

What a pathetic attempt to deflect and confuse again and again.

Does it really matter whether the venue was the airport, walk to the bus, walk from the bus to the beach-front hotel or even the practice venues?

The cardinal point is the self-stated demonstration(and with such pride) of the hero-worship of mere AB mortals.

Another ploy is turning furiously back into those pages of a dirty song-book when nothing new can be even vaguely offered.

Cornered like a RAT, by one HG, no less.
