As New Zealand’s rugby royalty, McCaw’s lifestyle regularly fills the society pages and always with reference to how the modest leader puts his country and his sport first.

He turned down an invitation to the wedding of Britain’s Prince William and Kate Middleton saying he wanted to focus on the Super 15 rugby competition.

He turned down lucrative offers to play for European clubs saying he would rather play in New Zealand.

He was the strong and determined frontman for television commercials inspiring people in Christchurch following the devastating earthquakes which wrecked his home city this year.

As a flying enthusiast and licensed pilot he was able to pull enough strings to get a 66-year-old DC3 out of an aviation museum to fly his Crusaders teammates to a match when an ash cloud from Chile’s Puyehue volcano had grounded more modern commercial aircraft.

What a guy !!!!

I’d have to agree on your point about wingers though, the Wallabies back three was always most dangerous when one or both of the wingers were fullbacks in their own right. Roff, Walker, Tune, and to an extent even guys like Ashley-Cooper and Gerrard in recent years.

Rod Davies is a prime example. You just can’t teach that sort of explosive speed, but it’s all for nought if you don’t have the defence, kicking and highball skills to back it up.

@Hitlar(Black Out)-2: You are so behind the times. 10-15 years ago, sure wingers needed all the speed possible but didnt really need to kick or ctatch many high balls. Jane has enough speed for a winger,he knows how to catch,kick,step,tackle and score tries. You may have the fastest man on the field but if he cant do anything else, i would rather have that sloth any day. I would have Jane over any of the South African wingers.

When I think emotionally. All through S15 season I’ve been having nightmares about the great players NZ have at their disposal:
Ranger
Sivi
Gear
SBW
Dagg
Ben Smith
Fruean
Crockett (MONSTER)

Not seeing them in the starting line up gives me hope.

Sure, Zac runs nice and straight but did so off SBW and Fruean, and yes off Dan.
Jane is class.
What the Springboks would do for wings like Rene and Hosea.
Toeava over SBW?

Springboks vs this All Blacks team. Bring it on, will be a close game.

@DonutDunning(DonutDunning)-15: 100% agreed. Guildford has produced one very fine test match, and that was at home agains the Springbok B team. With Jane, he's consistently played flawless rugby in over 20 test matches. My hunch is the back 3 in elimination matches will be Muliana, with Dagg on the left wing and Jane on the right, with Toeava covering both the midfield and the back 3 from the bench. Not my preferred back 3, but at least all 3 are prove, mistake-free operators at test match level.

@DAS(DAS)-14: Guildford would make sense to me if they didn't already have a better fast, high workrate winger in Corey Jane. But I fail to understand why Henry would not include one of the two proven gamebreakers in Gear and Sivivatu for the remaining wing spot. Especially when he will be going for the reliability of Muliaina over the more dangerous Dagg too. While extremely efficient, a back three of Jane, Guildford and Muliaina doesn't exactly strike fear into the opposition.

@Cane 73(Cane 73)-13: I at least understand Toeava -- he's got massive skills (best line-breaker in S 15, massive boot, abilityt o beat a man one on one, etc), they just haven't translated into test match rugby. My theory is his natural home is #15, not on the wing, but of the 5 best fullbacks in the world, NZ probably has 4 of them. That being said, Guildford?? He's got straight-line pace, and a great workrate...but is anyone scared of marking him? Gear's power and stepping, plus his nose for the tryline is simply a difference maker in big games. Guildford doesn't have any of that. To me it's like saying someone is a great prop, but their scrummaging is weak. To be a test match wionger, you better be an elite finisher. Guildford isn't.

@DAS(DAS)-12: Couldn't agree with you more... almost, Gear could be Lomu-esque given a bit of space. Drop Woodcock for Hammett, Slade for Evans (can the overseas based player rule as we're deep in the smelly stuff should Carter get injured), and bring Gear in for 'only catch on special occasions' Toeava - he's a liability.
