John Smit will lead the Springboks in their World Cup defence.

The biggest surprise was the inclusion of wing Odwa Ndungane, who made the squad ahead of Lwazi Mvovo, who has been part of the mix in recent months.

Francois Louw comes in as cover for Heinrich Brussow, despite being omitted for the entire Tri-Nations before heading to Bath to commence his contract with the English club.

There is no place for Gerhard Mostert or Alistair Hargreaves, with Johann Muller and Danie Rossouw expected to cover lock. Elsewhere in the pack, prop CJ van der Linde cracks the nod, his ability to cover loosehead and tighthead presumably counting in his favour.

In the back division, Pat Lambie makes the squad after an injury scare.
