Joost refuses to give up
25 Aug 2011
Joost van der Westhuizen has announced that he is undergoing experimental stem cell treatment in order to cure his motor neuron disease.
The former Springbok captain told a media conference on Wednesday that he is already undergoing the treatment. ‘I’m going to fight this thing. Don’t worry, I’m not going to die too soon,’ he said. ‘The treatment was not an overnight decision. I spent a long time with the doctors.’
The treatment was developed by Dr Steve Ray, a British neuron-scientist. There are no guarantees that the treatment will work, but Van der Westhuizen admitted that at this stage, he is willing to try anything.
The SA Rugby Legends Association has offered to collect money for Van der Westhuizen’s medical costs.

Good luck number 9.
Is Joost struggling to pay these bills? Would have thought he was fairly well off and it was more of a medical issue than financial.

Best no.9 to ever wear a bok jersey. All the best Joost, I hope you win.

@shebeen(shebeen)-2: The medical costs, especially converted into pounds, would stretch his finances to the limit.

@shebeen(shebeen)-2: Don’t think Joost has much money left after his divorce. I am sure his sweetheart ex took him to the cleaners for ******** around.

I remember once being asked who the greatest rugby player in the world was, i said it was a tricky question as players play in different positions and have different roles and abilities. But i said if i had to choose (im Scottish by the way) it would be Joost Van Der Westhuizen, he literally was perfect and could do anything, he rarely put a foot wrong – ever!
Have your say
