Willie le Roux and Lappies Labuschagne have finally been rewarded with spots in the Springbok training group. They are two of eight that are first timers in Springbok training groups this year. The others are Gio Aplon, Trevor Nyakane, JJ Engelbrecht, Lionel Mapoe, Wiehahn Herbst and Demetri Catrakilis. The group of players will assemble in Durban for the second training camp of the year, before the final squad for the Incoming Tours is selected. Players not considered due to injury include: JP Pietersen, Jaco Taute, Frans Steyn, Johan Goosen, Duane Vermeulen, Pat Cilliers and Frans Malherbe. ... Read Article25 May 2013

Jan Serfontein, the player of last year's under 20 World Championship, will head the baby Boks defence in France. Serfontein and Kings wing Sergeal Petersen are two Super Rugby regulars to make Dawie Theron's squad and brilliant flyhalf Handre Pollard is another to play in a second successive tournament. Theron's squad lost a three-match series 2-1 to Argentina in Argentina. Serfontein, Petersen and Western Province's Cheslin Kolbe did not play in those matches. Bulls loose forward Ruan Steenkamp is captain. Serfontein and Pollard are the only two squad members from last year's ... Read Article14 May 2013
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has selected several uncapped Blues players in his training group. Hansen confirmed 38 names and this included many from the potent Blues backline. The Highlanders, despite only winning one match in this year's Super Rugby competition, have six players in the group. An obvious area of weakness is at hooker where Hansen has selected veterans Andrew Hore and Keven Mealamu and Canes Dane Coles. Options are limited and it certainly is a concern for New Zealanders. No overseas-based players were considered, as it is NZRFU policy. Among the uncapped players ... Read Article15 May 2013
French coach Philipe Saint-Andre has included three South African-born players for the three-Test series against the All Blacks in New Zealand. Racing Metro flank Bernard le Roux and Clermont prop Daniel Kotze join Antonie Claassen in a squad that includes eight new caps. Fijian-born Clermont winger Noa Nakaitaci is among the newcomers. Saint-Andre has rested flyhalf Francois Trinh-Duc, but included Toulon's Frederic Michalak. France play world champions New Zealand on June 8, 15 and 22 in Auckland, Hamilton and New Plymouth respectively. French super club Toulon's foreign dominance ... Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article26 Aug 2011

Hoskins should be accountable for what? Money talks and the provinces will select teams that will ensure that sponsorships, especially TV, continue. Hoskins is accountable for keeping the game in good financial health rather than the number of black faces in the team. Business is business.

Well your argument is the equivalent of SA Rugby spending R27,000,000-00 to keep the Eastern Cape out of super rugby.
Where is your crying and gnashing of teeth for this?
Or is this selective memory?
25 Aug 2011, 17:18 pm
Meanwhile SA Rugby has given their blessing for the players to have intacourse during the RWC with their partners (for whom they will have to pay to be there)

They should just dissolve and accept the Sharks as their home Union. Maybe the mighty Sharks can play a couple of games in the new PE stadium to give the EC something to really shout about.
Good crowd at games though.

Transformation should be taking place from age 8 to 18.
It’s purpose should be to encourage black kids who wouldn’t ordinarily play rugby to start.
You do this by improving access to facilities and coaching (through junior clubs) and fostering a love for the game – free tickets to stadiums for kids and free to air rugby on SABC. That’s where the government’s and SARU’s money should be going.
25 Aug 2011, 17:42 pm
@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-225: Why should PE/EC miss out on a promotional opportunity.. Having your own Franchise is massive in terms Tourism and general business promotion.. I thought you would have a better understanding of the Evironment and Structure of business.

25 Aug 2011, 18:08 pm
Keo,, you are worng. Transformation needs to happen at a school and club level. SARU should be dumping all their money into promoting rugby in majority black schools – put up the fileds, supply the coaches… you can’t suddenly become a rugby player when you enter the Currie Cup. Right now, most of our black players, like our white players, are coming from traditional rugby powerhouse schools – because they have the best coaches, gyms, weight regimes, etc. South Africa will never tap into its vast wealth of potential payers while selection is limited to whether you attended Grey Bloem, or elite schools like Michaelhouse. SARU needs to make those same opportunities available to kids from rural KZN, from Attridgeville, from King Williamstown – the places of the country that are neglected by all. Black kids will flock to the game if it is well resourced.
25 Aug 2011, 18:15 pm
I find watching Keo TV a ball ache so haven’t even bothered watching.
But just on the title, I have mentioned this before:
‘What legacy will Hoskins leave behind?’
So he does not upset the apple-cart, some think that’s a good thing, I don’t.
You are a leader, leaders instigate change and there is a lot of things in SA Rugby that need(ed) changing.
SA Rugby needs leaders, not mediators.
25 Aug 2011, 18:17 pm
The sad thing is very few people are intrested in giving young black kids a chance 2 play the game they love. For the past three years i have bn around the province of KZN in places like Richmond and KwaMaphumulo getn kids intrested and playing. This i have done at my own expense because coperate south africa and all the lovely people who claim to love this game and country are never intrested (including this proud site). So why throw blame around whe we are all intresting in preserving how things are? Next year i am hoping to get a few more schools going but in all honesty a single person is just that. Maybe people should get off the fence and get involved…

Keo always trying to stir trouble. You were happy when Brian van Rooyen was ousted by the President’s Council. On the other hand you are a President’s Council critic. I really do not get you. You are the know it all of rugby…doubt that very much.
Under Brian van Rooyen SARU turned its first profit in a long time. He started to get the wheels going on transformation but he did not have the support of the big guns. Under his presidency we had an u21 and u19 world cup and it is in this very tenure that Jake White’s foundation for 2007WC win was laid.
Now there’s a man who was ousted for other reasons and i am sure they were not rugby reasons because he delivered on his mandate. Oregan was always going to struggle coming in after van Rooyen. His task was to ensure that he is more mild mannered than Brian and that meant he had to keep a low profile and do a very tough balancing act. I think he has done just that.
He has in fact pleased the President’s Council and maintained the status quo. He did what i expected him to do and i cannot call for his head now.
Whoever comes in must really bring in a plan of how the boks can win 40 in 50 tests in between world cups. If a new president can deliver on that promise then it is fine by me.
25 Aug 2011, 19:52 pm
The concept of transformation needs to be clearly defined and maybe ditched altogether, dare I say it. From a rugby context, the the broad misgiuded assumption is that teams MUST, in an ideal world, mirror the demographics of a country. If I have got this wriong, then please correct me. To me it seems that all discussions about the transformation subject are centred on this argument as a given truth if you like. This is completely wrong and a sure recepie for resentment and increased polarisation and division, the consequences of which our children will pay for without a doubt. Instead, EQUAL OPPORTUNITY should be the goal and focus. That is, any child should be allowed the opportunity to realise their full potential in whatever field THEY CHOOSE. That is where resources should and must be targeted and not on a race-based numbers game. The best talent coupled with hard work, dedication, discipline etc. will then rise to the top and be rewarded. Surely this is the transparent and logical path South Africa must take. On what scientific grounds MUST the national team represent the the racial demographics of a country? It is a completely absurd concept just as it would be to expect the majority of the world’s high jumpers to come from China or India; a possibility but not necessarily a given natural expectation.
