Currie Cup latest – Double blow for Cheetahs
30 Aug 2011
Keo.co.za brings you news from the Currie Cup.
Double blow for Cheetahs – Ashley Johnson and WP Nel will miss the Cheetahs match against the Leopards this weekend because of injury.
Prop Nel was a late withdrawal from the Cheetahs’ clash against Griquas last weekend and still hasn’t recovered from a calf injury. No 8 Johnson picked up a shoulder injury but is only expected to be sidelined for one week.
Coenie Oosthuizen will revert from loosehead to tighthead to cover Nel while Boom Prinsloo is likely to replace Johnson in the loose trio.

I think that the Leopard’s can take these fat farm girls … they are not so super without Sarel it seems.

Is it easy for a Loosehead to switch to tighthead?? I suppose not otherwise the Boks would have Gurthro and Beast on either side of the scrum…
It is my understanding that the Nazis have done everything possible to redicule this possibility and solution to the bok front row.

@youknowwho(youknowwho)-3:
What the?
Beast Mtawarira used to be a loose-forward until a few years back when the Sharks made him into a loosehead. There is no way in hell he could play tighthead straight off at test level, unless of course you’d like to see him break his neck.
Gurthro Steenkamp played a bit of tighthead at school. But he’s built like a loosehead. Has nothing to do with Nazis.
And Coenie Oosthuizen spent his time at Grey College playing tighthead. They moved him to loosehead because they wanted to bring him in as a youngster, considering the work he does around the park. Acts as a 4th loose-forward. What is wrong with now playing him in his preferred position of tighthead?
Tighthead is a lot more difficult in the professional game, or at schools level as well actually.

@youknowwho(youknowwho)-3: Let’s hope you never find out what a Nazi is. Hmmm… you probably won’t live long enough to reflect on it.

Just read on a proper rugby site that Coenie’s planned (re)transition to tighthead has started…..I for one am very happy about that. 2012 – Beast, Bismark, Coenie…
Note that Coenie was top pilfered in the Super 15 so 3 accomplished “fetchers” in your forward back if Brussouw is also playing.
Nice!

@Smellthis(Smellthis)-9:
Coenie playing tighthead won’t last long. Soon as WP Nel is back he’ll go back to the loosehead side, and act as cover.
Think we’ll find him taking the Beasts spot if he has a really good S15. Tighthead must surely be between Jannie and WP.

@HendrikP
Really hope you are wrong mate. We need tightheads that can both scrum and play some ball…
I agree Coenie will just be cover this year, but reckon 20 mins per game for the remainder of the CC will feature strongly.

@Smellthis(Smellthis)-11:
Rather have experience in the position. Someone who’s been playing Super rugby at 3 for at least a couple of seasons. If Coenie wants to do that he’d either have to move away from the Cheetahs (which won’t happen), have WP Nel move away (won’t happen either), or if Nel picks up a serious injury.
For the time being he is best suited at 1. I’d rather pick a player with his capabilities in a position you know he’ll perform in.
Have your say
