The Boks never got out of first gear in beating Scotland in Nelspruit. And they didn't have to. The Scots were courageous, willing and tireless. But they always lacked the quality in attack and the polish as a team to make the Boks pay for an absent performance. The Boks won 30-17 after trailing 17-6 and they played more at idle pace than in first gear. The Boks were in a no-win situation. They were expected to win easily and if they did struggle, as happened, they were going to get caned in criticism, both from their supporters and the media. This was one of those matches the Boks ... The Bulls are South Africa's best team and they proved it in Bloemfontein. The Cheetahs have been outstanding all season and they were as good on Saturday night as they have been at any stage. Still it wasn't good enough to beat the Bulls, who won 30-25 after leading 30-13 with 10 minutes to play. The Cheetahs finished brilliantly and deserved the bonus point, but the Bulls consolidated their top two league placing thanks to an imposing first hour. Pierre Spies was impressive as team and pack leader, Arno Botha was ever present and the No 9, 10, 12 Bulls axis of Francois Hougaard, Morne ... Read Article11 Jun 2013
Brendan Venter's appointment as Sharks Director of Rugby is a good one. But the decision to end John Plumtree's Sharks coaching tenure is not. Former Springbok and Italy coach Nick Mallett turned down an invitation for the role of Sharks Director of Rugby and Venter, formerly the head coach and Director of Rugby at Saracens, will start his job at the outset of the Currie Cup season. Plumtree remains the Super Rugby head coach until the end of this season's tournament but his contract has not been renewed. Plumtree is highly rated in Europe and will in all likelihood link up with a European ... Read Article8 Jun 2013
Rene Ranger was among the few highlights in New Zealand's 23-13 win against France in Auckland. The All Blacks led 17-10 at half time but France dominated field position for most of the match and enjoyed the greater quality in possession. However they couldn't translate the advantage in the set phase and at the breakdown into points. New Zealand defended well in a match of poor quality. France lead early through Wesley Fofana's try and it took Ben Smith's break to start up New Zealand's international season. Smith has been the form New Zealand back in Super Rugby and he looked a class ... Read Article27 May 2013
Kiwi Vern Cotter is Scotland's new head coach. Cotter will only take up the position in a year's time. He will see out his contact with French club Clermont. Cotter's appointment means that New Zealanders will coach Scotland, Ireland (Joe Schmidt) and Wales (Warren Gatland). New Zealander Robbie Deans has been at the helm of Australia for the last five years and current Blues coach John Kirwan coached Italy and Japan. Kiwi coaches have also been at the helm of Samoa and Fiji in recent years. Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article8 Sep 2011

All the best to New Zealand in hosting this world cup. Think they will host a marvelous world cup. It will be a cracker down there. The atmosphere in NZ gonna be awesome.
Enjoy it to all the kiwis that blog here. Nothing more wonderful than hosting a world cup in ones own country. Vibe there must be really awesome right now.
To all the saffas going, enjoy it for all of us.
8 Sep 2011, 14:26 pm
@Puma(Puma)-45: Apparently the easier route is on the other side of the draw. I don’t care realy. As long as we beat every single team we play against. All it comes down to for me. Same like last time
8 Sep 2011, 14:26 pm
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-49:
I will be there next weekend and then North Harbour the week after but then back to Oz….
Meeting my bro in law and some mates from the US.
Gonna be huge – a Post Office Trip (“male only”) but nothing *** about it !!
8 Sep 2011, 14:27 pm
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-48: In my book one semi will be Poms vs Aus, and I believe the poms will desecrate their counterparts up front. Dejavu
As Hendrik said earlier, an England/SA final is not that far fetched. Assuming we get through the groups, and a NZ semi, unscathed
8 Sep 2011, 14:27 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-37:
i can just see headlines like: the day the future of rugby died.
being put out in oz, nz and the rest of the arssecreep nations…hehehe
8 Sep 2011, 14:29 pm
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-41: I say so too.
Let the games begin…
Heck so excited now. Only a few days before our Boks play.
You right we would have to face Oz whether we see them in the quarter or final that is if they make the final. Don’t they face England in the semi? If they make it that far. Think they will though. England could surprise.
8 Sep 2011, 14:30 pm
@Eight Ace(Eight Ace)-53:
Have a ball dude!
@conan wishes he was a springbok #4 locks girlfriend…(i_love_u_bakkiesbotha)-55:
England not streetsmart enough to win a semi this time around I believe.
8 Sep 2011, 14:32 pm
@Puma(Puma)-51: Amen brutha
8 Sep 2011, 14:34 pm
@UptheGuts(UptheGuts)-52: Oz has the easiest route out of any.
Ours is the hardest but we really should win our pool. Well hoping we do. Cause really looking forward to seeing us play NZ in the semi on their home soil in a wc. Was hoping it was a Bok/AB final in 2007 but not to be. Also now would have hoped for a Bok/AB final but they seeded the teams way, way too early. So we face them in the semi. If we make it that far, which I really hope we do. We can beat them. My biggest worry is the ref. On home soil the ref always seems to give those 50/50 calls to the home team. Our discipline will have to be 100%.
Now just holding thumbs no injuries to any of our players.
Go Bokke Go.
8 Sep 2011, 14:37 pm
@conan wishes he was a springbok #4 locks girlfriend…(i_love_u_bakkiesbotha)-55: it will be more like:
“play the game, collect your stupid pineapple and get the feck off our island”
8 Sep 2011, 14:40 pm
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-58: The last time we will see a wc in a real rugby country for a very long time, until South Africa gets it again. So we should all really enjoy this world cup. NZ will hold a great tourney I am very sure of that.
Now just done a quick squiz on some of the rugby blogs I blog on and saw on sw a thread. Where will everyone be watching the games that are not in NZ. Now that would be a nice subject..hehehe.
I also only watched the send of today. Set my pvr before I went away on business.
What a bloody marvelous send off that was for our Boks!! Well done South Africa. Doubt any country had a send of like that. Brilliant.
8 Sep 2011, 14:40 pm
@Puma(Puma)-61: of = off
8 Sep 2011, 14:41 pm
@Puma(Puma)-61: Yeah we watched it as a family. Great stuff!
8 Sep 2011, 14:41 pm
Plus I want the classic final…
NZ v Boks…
8 Sep 2011, 14:41 pm
Okay out of here now. Back later.
8 Sep 2011, 14:43 pm
ok, i am out.
have a pleasant day all and wherever you are, enjoy the opening tomorrow.
rugby time again.
bokke (quiet one again)
8 Sep 2011, 14:44 pm
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-64: SO DO I… hehe.
Heck that would have been awesome. Just not to be. Pity, unless we do lose to Wales and go the tough route beating Oz and England. Or NZ lose to France which I doubt very much. This time round they gonna klap France big time.
Cheers PA. In a teleconference now. Back later.
8 Sep 2011, 15:02 pm
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-64: The purists final
8 Sep 2011, 15:04 pm
@RedMan(RedMan)-68:
Just imagine…
8 Sep 2011, 15:12 pm
Can you imagine if the Boks actually slipped up and came runner up in their pool, but everything else went to plan? The All Blacks would be all alone on one side of the draw with France, England, Australia and South Africa against each other on the other side! Rugby really needs to expand more then it has.
8 Sep 2011, 15:18 pm
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-64:
for that to happen the all blacks would have to throw a game…how likely is that?
well they are desperate enough…
8 Sep 2011, 15:21 pm
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-64:
You want the classic final? England vs Scotland?
Good luck with that, old chap . . . I suspect you’ll be half right.
8 Sep 2011, 15:25 pm
@Kitchener(Kitchener)-72:
That you STM?
8 Sep 2011, 15:31 pm
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-73:
Errr . . . no, old bean, if it was STM (Sexually Transmitted Malady?) then it would be posted by that person. Not sure if you’re just pretending to sound this dim but my name on here is “Kitchener”. I’d draw you an arrow if it would help but I don’t know how.
8 Sep 2011, 15:34 pm
I smell s emen,that means Kitchener has burped.

@Fern is not a stud,he is merely no19(Fern)-75:
What rapier-like repartee! Such class . . . such sophistication . . .
8 Sep 2011, 15:39 pm
Lets be honest here the Boks have seen better days and as a unit are off form, there is no denying that!. However they can still win for two reasons 1) no team in the 6 nations is even remotely close to the top three at the moment 2) there have been stronger NZ and Australian sides in the past, NZ were stronger in 2005 and 2007 than they are now without a doubt.
The gambling thing is beyond a joke now Keo i dont care who you are sponsored by or whats in it for you, gambling is for fu@king bums. Instead of telling them to gamble just tell them to cut to the chase and suspend 6 feet of rope off a sturdy beam!
8 Sep 2011, 15:41 pm
Watch the boks win the cup again despite all the naysayers. I see even Ewan Mckenzi has now dissed the boks. According to the reds coach it’s between NZ, AUS and Eng. Pffft……
8 Sep 2011, 15:42 pm
@Kitchener(Kitchener)-74:
Hard to keep track with people changing their names all the time, at least its obvious you are from the same country or support the same country.
As far as ‘classic’ finals go, the Calcutta Cup might have been ‘classic’ in 1879, but we have moved on since then.
8 Sep 2011, 15:45 pm
@cab(cab)-10: hahahahahaha ive never laughed so loud.
8 Sep 2011, 15:45 pm
@Fern is not a stud,he is merely no19(Fern)-75: what the f u c k??? What’s your name? Redneck Billy bob? Do us all a favour and crawl back into that hole you came from.

Rules for RWC, have they always had bonus points in the Pool stages?
Match points system
The following number of match points will be awarded for each pool phase match:
Win – 4 points
Draw – 2 points
Loss – 0 points
4 or more tries – 1 point
Loss by 7 points or less – 1 point
Rankings at the completion of the pool phase
At the completion of the pool phase, the teams in a pool are ranked one through five based on their cumulative match points, and identified respectively as winner, runner-up, third, fourth and fifth.
If at the completion of the pool phase two or more teams are level on match points, then the following criteria shall be used in the following order until one of the Teams can be determined as the higher ranked:
The winner of the match in which the two tied teams have played each other shall be the higher ranked;
The team which has the best difference between points scored for and points scored against in all its pool matches shall be the higher ranked;
The team which has the best difference between tries scored for and tries scored against in all its pool matches shall be the higher ranked;
The team which has scored most points in all its pool matches shall be the higher ranked;
The team which has scored most tries in all its pool matches shall be the higher ranked;
Should the tie be unresolved at the conclusion of steps 1 through 5, the team that is higher ranked in the updated Official IRB World Rankings on October 3, 2011.
8 Sep 2011, 15:47 pm
im betting on New Zealand to lose the semi final.
8 Sep 2011, 15:48 pm
@Wezwp(Wezwp)-83: lol what am i saying.They going to take the whole Tournament.
8 Sep 2011, 15:53 pm
New Zealand always take every other tournament there is to win in rugby and the most messed up thing about it all is that they cant take the one that really counts.
Its like England claiming they going to win the soccer world cup but always fall short well before the last hurdle.
8 Sep 2011, 15:53 pm
@dquinn25(dquinn25)-77: England are very good at beating Australia and the French definitely provide a psychological threat to the All Blacks at world cups. I wouldn’t be to quick to write them off causing a major upset along the way.
8 Sep 2011, 15:54 pm
Anyway guys im off to follow keo’s tweets. ;0
8 Sep 2011, 16:04 pm
@HongKongSlong(HongKongSlong)-86: True true!
Australias forwarded just get mullered against Englandand theirbacks become redundant
Injury to either McCaw or Carter would be disastrous for NZ who in my opinion are 40% of this team
8 Sep 2011, 16:49 pm
Boks to win comfortably
Brussow ill rule the breakdown which wont allow Welsh to play quick multiphase game they wish to play in order to move bigger pack around.
Bok tight 5 to rule the collision points.Gain forward momentum allowing loose trio to gain upper hand.
Better kicking in game in du Preez,Morne & Frans will aid kick chase where Habana,JP & Fourie will win battle ahead of ageing/shorter Williams,rookie North & once good Byrne.
Wales dont have enough weapons to hurt SA without quick ball & dont have a direct enough pattern to dominate physically,
SA by 15

So Keo has thrown the dreaded curse over the Bokke has he?
8 Sep 2011, 18:39 pm
So Bakkies is out injured for the rest of the RWC … Fat boys better get that has-been out of there and call in Mostert now.
8 Sep 2011, 18:43 pm
yes it is true ..
Bakkies’s World Cup over?
Cape Town – Springbok lock Bakkies Botha’s dream of helping South Africa become the first team to successfully defend the World Cup might be over.
A reliable source in New Zealand confirmed to South Africa’s Sports Illustrated that Botha’s Achilles tendon injury – which has already ruled him out of Sunday’s match against Wales – is worse than was initially thought and the burly Bulls lock could miss the rest of the tournament.
The Springbok team will be announced at 22:00 (South African time) on Thursday night, and more clarity on Botha’s participation in the tournament will then be known.
Sports Illustrated reports that talks between Botha, the Springbok medical team and management were ongoing late into Thursday night New Zealand time, but that a decision is yet to be made on whether or not Botha will stay on in New Zealand.
