Simon Danielli scored two tries in the final five minutes to save Scotland from an embarrassing RWC defeat against Romania in Invercargill.
Romania, their forwards dominant and their scrum powerful, were 10 minutes away from one of the great World Cup upsets but Scotland found an extra gear in the final five minutes to finish with two tries and a bonus point win.
Daniel Carpo scored from a pushover try in the 71st minute to give the Romanians the lead and, playing with the wind, they merely had to hold their nerve to play out time. Instead the Romanians almost immediately conceded a penalty to Chris Paterson and with the scores 24-all the Romanians hoisted an up and under and then missed several tackles as Scotland launched a 70 metre counter attack for Danelli to score in the corner.
The try, in the 76th minute, crushed Romanian spirits and the Scots scored again to claim an unlikely win and an even more unlikely bonus point.
Romanian captain – and hooker – Marius Tincu was named man of the match.
