Willie le Roux and Lappies Labuschagne have finally been rewarded with spots in the Springbok training group. They are two of eight that are first timers in Springbok training groups this year. The others are Gio Aplon, Trevor Nyakane, JJ Engelbrecht, Lionel Mapoe, Wiehahn Herbst and Demetri Catrakilis. The group of players will assemble in Durban for the second training camp of the year, before the final squad for the Incoming Tours is selected. Players not considered due to injury include: JP Pietersen, Jaco Taute, Frans Steyn, Johan Goosen, Duane Vermeulen, Pat Cilliers and Frans Malherbe. ... Read Article23 May 2013
Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira is back in Black in White to face the Bulls this weekend. The Beast returning is one of a few changes to the Sharks side. The only injury enforced change is that of JP Pietersen, Piet Lindeque replacing him in midfield. In the pack, the Beast is back along with Pieter-Steph du Toit, Anton Bresler hurting his shoulder in training. Bresler drops from the match 22, allowing Jandre Marais to cover the second row from the bench. The only other new face to the match 22 is Sean Robinson, who replaces Lindeque on the wood. Both Bismarck du Plessis and Butch James ... Read Article25 Apr 2013
Jan Serfontein, the player of last year's under 20 World Championship, will head the baby Boks defence in France. Serfontein and Kings wing Sergeal Petersen are two Super Rugby regulars to make Dawie Theron's squad and brilliant flyhalf Handre Pollard is another to play in a second successive tournament. Theron's squad lost a three-match series 2-1 to Argentina in Argentina. Serfontein, Petersen and Western Province's Cheslin Kolbe did not play in those matches. Bulls loose forward Ruan Steenkamp is captain. Serfontein and Pollard are the only two squad members from last year's ... Read Article14 May 2013
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has selected several uncapped Blues players in his training group. Hansen confirmed 38 names and this included many from the potent Blues backline. The Highlanders, despite only winning one match in this year's Super Rugby competition, have six players in the group. An obvious area of weakness is at hooker where Hansen has selected veterans Andrew Hore and Keven Mealamu and Canes Dane Coles. Options are limited and it certainly is a concern for New Zealanders. No overseas-based players were considered, as it is NZRFU policy. Among the uncapped players ... Read Article15 May 2013
French coach Philipe Saint-Andre has included three South African-born players for the three-Test series against the All Blacks in New Zealand. Racing Metro flank Bernard le Roux and Clermont prop Daniel Kotze join Antonie Claassen in a squad that includes eight new caps. Fijian-born Clermont winger Noa Nakaitaci is among the newcomers. Saint-Andre has rested flyhalf Francois Trinh-Duc, but included Toulon's Frederic Michalak. France play world champions New Zealand on June 8, 15 and 22 in Auckland, Hamilton and New Plymouth respectively. French super club Toulon's foreign dominance ... Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article23 Sep 2011

Hey Keo,
Why is that even though Ireland beat Australia, and we are actually gaining confidence, getting our selections right slowly but surely, you still don’t think we have a chance? Have you not learned anything from past tournaments?
The World Cup has nothing to do with what a team looks like on paper, or how good they were before the tournament. It’s all about who wants it more on the day, and who is prepared to stop at nothing to get there. The Irish lost all of there warm-up games, and then beat the Tri Nations champions. The team you said are a shoe-in to face NZ in the final.
Why is it so hard for you to admit that we are contenders. You say we are going home? How about rather focusing on ways that will aid us in our quest? Patriotism is one thing, maar jy is net vol op pessimisties. Writing us off is retarded. If ANYONE in this tournament is good enough to beat both Australia and New Zealand, then it’s us.
Australia blew it. Quade Cooper blew it by becoming public enemy no. 1. Their tournament is over, New Zealands is starting tomorrow, and ours is well under way.

Some interesting things I have noticed at this WC:
1. The game is becoming increasingly professional. No longer do we see those teams who play in 80′s type rugby jerseys, big fat props and “lank en maer” locks and flanks. Players are well conditioned and structures are in place.
2. Defence is the focus. Rugby union is increasingly beginning to look like rugby league. Teams believe that they can win games with defence only, but what happens when you have two teams who both believe that? The most boring rugby on the planet.
3. There is a lot riding on this WC for many teams and individuals. J Smit has a helluva lot to prove, as does PDV. The AB’s simply have to win it in their own backyard to prevent a national disaster. Robbie Deans is yet to knock the Wallabies into shape. The NH sides have to prove that they are more than capable of the odd surprise.
In short, it has been and proves to still be a very interesting WC.

Keo sounds a lot more intelligent on paper… But then again, I suppose most Saffa’s do.

Hey guys lets get some perspective. The Keo gang is on tour. I too would be on the sauce! And at least its an entertaining watch.
I do not agree that we will be out of the tournament after the Australia match. On paper and form I believe that the Boks are looking stronger than Oz. The semi against the AB’s will be the big one.

Some classic comments guys am having a lekker lag this morning!
Boks are doing an awesome job – as long as Keo keeps supporting other teams, the Boks will be fine
23 Sep 2011, 10:34 am
right keo, some perspective
- we will beat Aus because we will apply the pressure and not fade like we did in Durban. Quade will have a mare, throw a speculative pass in his 22 and we will score.
- we will beat New Zealand because they will be put under some pressure and when they are down after 60mins they will start to implode
- final will be the easiest of the lot.
Oh some additional perspective – after following keo for the last 7 years the one thing I do know is his predictions (based on his perceptions) are mostly WRONG

why we will beat aus and the maorilanders… and win the wc…??
we all know the boks are most dangerous when their backs are against the wall… and that’s why we do well at world cups… (barring coaching brainfarts like mallet and streuli…)
in the knocks-outs… for obvious reasons… our backs are against the wall every game…
no other team has that backs-against-the-wall in-your-face do-or-die we’ll-show-you attitude of the boks… not one nada zip zero…
that belligerent desire to prove the rugby world wrong and give them that middle finger salute… is something the rest of the world doesn’t understand about us…
but we do…
