GARETH DUNCAN watched the Sharks overcome a poor start to beat Griquas 29-18 in Durban.

There was a floodlight blackout at Kings Park in the 28th minute that paused the game for several minutes. While it proved to be a hassle for the visiting Griquas, who enjoyed an impressive start to the match, it gave the Sharks a much-needed break as they displayed a horror opening display. The hosts committed numerous handling errors that denied them any momentum on attack while players also missed tackles regularly. It was so frustrating that head coach John Plumtree was seen shouting orders from the touchline once play resumed once light returned.

The Sharks’ disappointing start saw Griquas surge into a 10-0 lead in the first quarter with fullback Rudi Vogt scoring a try and kicking a conversion and penalty. However, it seemed that Plumtree’s tounge lashing worked as his charges finished the match strongly. Close range drives from loosehead prop Dale Chadwick and Jean Deysel put the Sharks 14-10 at half-time.

Griquas led briefly when inside centre Matthew Rosslee dotted down and Vogt added his second penalty early in the second half, but the Sharks sealed a well deserved bonus-point win with two more tries. Inside centre Meyer Bosman dived over from 5m out before Lwazi Mvovo beat three defenders and touched down in the corner. Bosman kicked the Sharks’ only penalty for the final action of the match.

It was an important win for the Sharks as they came off a 53-32 hiding to the Cheetahs last weekend. For Griquas, it was a fourth consecutive defeat that may have well ended their semi-final hopes.

    I’d be so dissapointed if I was a Shark supporter. This tactic was sickening, and SARU should really be investigating.

    I was chewing on my steak in Spur thinking to myself: Heck! Sharks management really have to do something, because they’re about to lose badly!

    I expected a fake injury, but turning off the lights!?! A new low for the Sharks!
