Pool A latest – Fresh concerns around Read
28 Sep 2011
Keo.co.za brings you the latest news from Pool A.
Fresh concerns around Read - All Blacks No 8 Kieran Read pulled up at training with a recurrence of the ankle injury that has curtailed his involvement at the World Cup.
He appeared to be in some discomfort and received attention from team doctors. Reports suggest Read should still be available for selection against Canada on Sunday, but the All Blacks’ selectors will hope the injury doesn’t regress and preclude him from selection for the quarter-final.

@bokke bo(bokke bo)-50: but if the allegations are true and its bankrupting them then what alternatives are there? I know theyre bluffing a bit but I think the reasons are valid. Why should the be losing that much money to compete in this tournament. break even at least.

“@poppa69; when it comes to 3 big games china, it is the mind that dictates how the body behaves. Let that be your lesson for the day man!!

The way the funding model for rugby is going internationally, playing strength is going to end up directly linked to population (viewer) base. It won’t any longer be like the amateur days where so many cultural inputs could decide a countries strength on the field. It will just become a question of who has the biggest cheque book. Already in the NH the clubs virtually control the game. International bodies have to negotiate deals with the clubs to get access to the players. The end result is that the international game will become secondary to the club competitions. Just look at the IPL in cricket and how the international schedule has had to be altered to allow for a club comp purely because of the revenue involved. Also look at how many great players have ‘retired early’ from international cricket to ‘extend’ their playing days in the IPL. If this is the future you want for international rugby, then ignore the wider context of what Steve Tew is saying. Personally I would hate to see over 100 years of tremendous history get sold to the highest bidder.

@bokke bo(bokke bo)-50:
I understand boycotting a tournament isnt the best way to do things, but if you wanted mature and a grown up post, you should have posted one yourself.
Where did anyone say if you wont let us win we will not go to the 2015 Tournament,its got nothing to do with winning.. and the 24 years thing has nothing to do with this at all.
Thing is rugby now is a business. Someone is making alot of money from the RWCs. IRB took a profit of 234 million on the 2007 RWC.
Its because they tell teams they cant use there own sponsers etc and teams can only use the sponsors the IRB want them to use.. The IRB is all about itself, it to is a business.
If you cant afford to go to the RWC, then how do you go?

@bokke bo(bokke bo)-54:
Your starting to get damn annoying.
Have you no clue as to what Mr Tew is saying.
No matter when he said it, people like you would not like it and find something to complain about.
How much money can a business lose before they say, enough is enough.

I have concerns about Tew broadcasting his thoughts in the manner he has. Considering the general public will have zero input into the decision making process regarding changing the business model for future RWC’s, there was no upside in him airing his grievences.
Tew should have buttoned his lip and left it to the boardroom to discuss.

Aliboy and Hurricane, I’m totally fighting in your corner. It’s our arses that are bringing in the revenue for Pete’s sake man. Just feel it is unfair to load AB players with this thing now. Gonna make them CHOKE. they can’t handle this thing right now. Yew just didn’t apply his mind.simple.
Hurricane, I didn’t say what was being said, I said what was meant. Now stuff that in your pipe and smoke it…
Nite all

@bokke bo(bokke bo)-59:
Well you have a strange way of fighting in our corner. Saying we going to choke, another 24 years etc etc, blah blah blah.

@Brads(Brads)-58:
Yep fair call, but the public no matter what,have no say and really do you expect the public to have a say in a Business that is losing more than its getting.
We can say what we like, but its not going to fix anythinng. Its upto the big boys now.

Talking bout the money thing and being right in your corner. I mean you guys thrive on exporting sheep and Forrest products. Disgraceful that you can’t fill all seats for the matches and then bring this money thing up now. May leave mental scars in player and nation as a whole. This Tew guy just didn’t think about his timing man. May have done more damage than Susie – unintended of course, but mentally destructive non the less!

Brads; in the next 10 years our business models are gonna change radically. Guys like dear uncle Rupert are going to be brought to book or face the mobs. I can already smell the coffee. Anyway night mate, and maybe we talk some rugged on Friday. I’m outa here
29 Sep 2011, 03:05 am
@bokke bo(bokke bo)-62:
What has forrestry have to do with bums on seats??
lol i cant see why the agriculture business or the forrestry industry would fund the NZRU. Even if they were sponsoring the ABs, they wouldnt be able to show the sponsorship through the RWC, IRB owns all sponsorship rights.
I think the RWC so far has been better than expected,with crowd numbers.
Anyway all this has come about as it is obvious that we have a money problem. I dont want the ABs to pull out of anything cos of no money. But if its in the forecast, its better to get it out now and address it.
Mr Tew may have got the timing right, but he couldnt do it before the RWC, sounds like he couldnt do it during the RWC. If he did it after the RWC and NZ hadnt won the 2011 RWC, you can imagine what this place would be like.

this highlights how the fans of ALL nations are getting into the event…
worth a look see…
29 Sep 2011, 03:14 am
@Brads(Brads)-58: Yep, not sure about his timing or the need to go public right now either. Doesn’t feel quite right somehow. What I suspect is that there is much more going on about this than we know, and I just hope that Mr Tew is playing his hand properly given his much better understanding of the situation.
29 Sep 2011, 03:34 am
Well, let’s face it, if he comes out and makes vocal his issues before the event kicks off, it puts a real dampener on the opening ceremonies and first rounds of matches.
If he waits til the RWC is finished, he’s either branded a sore loser or it’s given little to no media coverage as there’s a feelgood factor in NZ.
He’s timed it so that the majority of unions have a presence in the region and can be met with, if matters decree so, and also so that it overshadows matters in the least way, provided sense prevails.
He just chose the wrong bloody words. The “boycott” as such is an empty threat anyway.
29 Sep 2011, 03:55 am
I agree with the sentiment – ie that the IRB-bully nations are creaming it off the back of the high-profile teams brandishing the small stick.
BUT I say a BIG FU to Mr Tew for thinking that he has the right to start threatening boycotts & strikes by our NATIONAL TEAM and an even BIGGER FU for having the arrogance and the insensitivity to be stoooooopid enough to latch this plan in the middle of a RWC which we’re hosting, and a bloody fine job of it too.
Steve Tew and your overpaid lackeys – you are only there at our behest so why dont you
S T F U

Panther, you got your finger on the tickey there. Tew has given you NZ’s such a sour and bad name. Whenever I go over, you guys are such gentlemen/women and great hosts. Hoping to go over for the shoot out. Just get rid

@poppa69(poppa69)-49:
Jarred Hoeatta should have been taken as cover as he is invaluable to the squad selection balance.There was no need to take 5 locks.Hoeatta would have freed up space for an extra loosie.Therefore Todd should have gone. Would have taken Messam ahead of Thompson who wouldnt be required for his ineffectual “hybrid role” since Todd a openside specialist would be in squad. A trio of Kaino McCaw Messam would have been better with a harder edge to it. Then second half you could move Todd to 7 and Richie to 8.
Thompson is weak link
