Duane Vermeulen is out of the June Tests. Stormers strong man Duane Vermeulen returned home from the Stormers Super Rugby tour because of injury and conservatively won't play again until July. It could be that he is out for the remainder of the Super Rugby season as well because of knee ligament damage. Stormers loose-forward Rynhardt Elstadt is also out for at least six weeks as the Cape-based franchise's season went from bad to worse in Sydney. Vermeulen, Meyer's first choice No 8, will be nursed back to action for the Rugby Championship in August. His injury means a likely Bok start ... Read Article19 May 2013
GREGOR PAUL, in the Herald on Sunday, writes world rugby will get its integrated season after the 2015 World Cup and Super Rugby won't break to accommodate an international window. Super Rugby will shift to a March start and won't break for test matches, the June window will be shifted to July and all players will have a 14 to 16-week off-season. Other innovative plans are being discussed, such as building a world series of tests in years that fall between the World Cup and British Lions tours. The revolution that All Black coach Steve Hansen called for last week is coming. The players ... Read Article25 Apr 2013
Jan Serfontein, the player of last year's under 20 World Championship, will head the baby Boks defence in France. Serfontein and Kings wing Sergeal Petersen are two Super Rugby regulars to make Dawie Theron's squad and brilliant flyhalf Handre Pollard is another to play in a second successive tournament. Theron's squad lost a three-match series 2-1 to Argentina in Argentina. Serfontein, Petersen and Western Province's Cheslin Kolbe did not play in those matches. Bulls loose forward Ruan Steenkamp is captain. Serfontein and Pollard are the only two squad members from last year's ... Read Article14 May 2013
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has selected several uncapped Blues players in his training group. Hansen confirmed 38 names and this included many from the potent Blues backline. The Highlanders, despite only winning one match in this year's Super Rugby competition, have six players in the group. An obvious area of weakness is at hooker where Hansen has selected veterans Andrew Hore and Keven Mealamu and Canes Dane Coles. Options are limited and it certainly is a concern for New Zealanders. No overseas-based players were considered, as it is NZRFU policy. Among the uncapped players ... Read Article15 May 2013
French coach Philipe Saint-Andre has included three South African-born players for the three-Test series against the All Blacks in New Zealand. Racing Metro flank Bernard le Roux and Clermont prop Daniel Kotze join Antonie Claassen in a squad that includes eight new caps. Fijian-born Clermont winger Noa Nakaitaci is among the newcomers. Saint-Andre has rested flyhalf Francois Trinh-Duc, but included Toulon's Frederic Michalak. France play world champions New Zealand on June 8, 15 and 22 in Auckland, Hamilton and New Plymouth respectively. French super club Toulon's foreign dominance ... Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article1 Oct 2011

Divvy risked his A team against the Samoans.
1 Oct 2011, 09:07 am
shite, i saw this on the field, boks chances just taken a nosedive, he looked like a revelation. lets just hope bakkies is available.
1 Oct 2011, 09:12 am
Frans Steyn was essential to our hopes for victory; the find of the tournament.
1 Oct 2011, 09:28 am
Kiwis saw this and changed their mind to start Carter and McCaw against Canada. Even went to the extent to get Carter to lie on the floor and fake a training niggle ha ha ha oh well good on them..
1 Oct 2011, 09:33 am
dont try your hedge bet tricks keo.
you want to use this as your excuse if the boks go out.
1 Oct 2011, 09:48 am
Steyn is a massive loss to the Boks.
Frans Steyn is world class. He was one of our oustanding Boks in this wc so far. Our two replacements in JdJ and JdV are nowhere near Frans Steyns class.
Our hopes of winning this world cup has now taken a massive dive.
What a pity it came near the end. Cause think they might have been thinking of playing JdV and taking Fransie off. To make sure he was there for us for the play offs. As Hougaard and JdV were warming up to come on. Only Hougaard game on and got injured almost straight away. Then JdV had to go to wing. So Fransie was left on for the rest of the game. Well it seemed they were going to take Fransie off if JdV was coming on. Cause no way were they going to take Lambie off cause he was also covering fh if Morne got injured.

@Puma(Puma)-6: typo meant – outstanding
1 Oct 2011, 09:52 am
@Guns(Guns)-4: Canada are not filthy pigs like those “kiwi” Samoans.
Goosen must be called up to play 15 … one 60m kicker to replace another.
1 Oct 2011, 09:58 am
Ja because of that fat Plod pig and because it is madness having Beast in the same match 22 as the superior Guthro, which necessitates a 5/2 bench split, Fransie was sacrificed … yes two sharkievarkie prick players contributed to this disaster.
1 Oct 2011, 10:02 am
@RL(RL)-8:
I’d consider that as well albeit that would be very unfair on the young player to expect so much so soon after having his CC debut.
1 Oct 2011, 10:05 am
I see van der linde dropping out of the match 22 Smit moving to the bench to cover hooker and tight head. A massive gamble but we now need to carry an extra backline player.
1 Oct 2011, 10:09 am
@Brigadier Van Zyl(Brigadier Van Zyl)-11: leave CJ in the match 22, drop Beast who is an inferior tight forward to Guthro, fly in Goosen to cover the bench. That’s what I would do.
1 Oct 2011, 11:11 am
@12 RL. That’s why you are incharge of sitting on the sofa scratching your nuts and nowhere nearthe Bok selection panel.

Say it isn’t so!
1 Oct 2011, 11:30 am
Wait for the news. Zane is on his way.
1 Oct 2011, 11:37 am
Big problem!!!!!!!!

1 Oct 2011, 11:38 am
No more backline. JdV is no where near the quality of Steyn. He refuses to pass and tries to be the hero all the time. This pigheaded re-tard game plan of kicking the ball away along with Danie, Spies and Smit constantly starting and that is the world cup for the Boks.
You can’t expect to win when only Brussow, Burger and Bismarck (when he gets on) are the only ones making the tackles whilst vag-man Spies tries to get as far away from the action as possible. The Boks are currently playing with about 12 players.

Well said.
1 Oct 2011, 12:01 pm
Lambie was average?
1 Oct 2011, 12:11 pm
Goosen has great potential but it would be idiotic to fly him in. Takbok (Kirchner) is no option. Can’t even remember the back line players on standby. Conrad…..
1 Oct 2011, 12:13 pm
Carter has withdrawn from Canada match tomorrow with groin injury sustained on captain’s run . McCaw already out of this game due to chronic foot problem . Do not know how serious Carter’s injury is but groin injuries can endure .
1 Oct 2011, 12:18 pm
@Kobus Kitty(Kobus Kitty)-19: Agreed 100%. Gameplan is awful and with Steyn out and JDV back we have NO CHANCE
1 Oct 2011, 12:22 pm
The winner of SA, Aus and NZ may be short a few players for the Northern Hemisphere Walkover Bonus Game (I think the IRB have named it the Final).
1 Oct 2011, 12:26 pm
How bad is hougaard`s injury as i have not seen news to say how he is,i hope it is not serious.It is a pity about steyn as he was playing in my mind his best position at12 there is no use in moaning about it what`s done is done the boks will just have to get on without him.
1 Oct 2011, 12:32 pm
Zane Kirchner replacing Frans Steyn is not a joke, it is official.
1 Oct 2011, 12:34 pm
@dWeePer(dWeePer)-29: That is PATHETIC news. My cat is better than that guy
1 Oct 2011, 12:57 pm
Haha, Kirchner is terrible. Steyn is only rated in SA though, all he can do is kick long range penalties. No great loss.
1 Oct 2011, 13:00 pm
At least some people will now have a solid reason if we don’t go on and win the WC.
They can always claim that we “would have” won it if only Fransie did not get injured.
1 Oct 2011, 13:06 pm
@lawsy25(lawsy25)-31: What? Steyn may not be a rugbygod but he is sure better than all our other centres. JDV is as best a past-his-sell-by date once good player at provincial level.
Replacing Steyn with JDV is like fielding a team of 14. Another incercept queen like habana, they both don’t deserve their seats.
1 Oct 2011, 13:07 pm
@Goodthong. Is the reason your cat had not been called up a quarantine thing or has he previously represented another IRB nation?
1 Oct 2011, 13:11 pm
@nama1(nama1)-32:
Steyns two long range penalties were against whom?
and his try in the first match?
if it weren’t for him we would be on our way home already.
neh?
1 Oct 2011, 13:13 pm
@stormer in a teacup(stormer in a teacup)-34: Quarantine, Australia has tough transit laws and the other flights take too long
The irony of quarantine for my cat, but they let in Samoans ha ha ha
1 Oct 2011, 13:16 pm
@lawsy25(lawsy25)-31:
Hey, can you f-uck off? Thanks.
1 Oct 2011, 13:26 pm
Kobus is like Oscar The Grouch. He likes the trashcan to himself.
1 Oct 2011, 13:37 pm
@Gunther(gunther)-35:
Then again…maybe not.
1 Oct 2011, 14:54 pm
Well, I suppose only a few will be sad to see Frans go home. After all he was/is a fat boy, too slow, too one dimensional, too much of an attitude.
Rugby followers/experts/lovers my faarken @ss!
See you in the Bok team soon Fransie!
1 Oct 2011, 17:34 pm
@RL(RL)-12:
You are right about Goosen as a future megastar, but his defense has not been tested at this level.
1 Oct 2011, 17:36 pm
The way I see it is that there is still a 5% chance Frans will stay on?
1 Oct 2011, 17:38 pm
@TheAgent(TheAgent)-42:
Mind games, eh. You could be right. Aussies are gamblers. Easily led.
1 Oct 2011, 17:42 pm
@Jinx2(Jinx2)-43: Lets see. We can only hope. It has happened before that it was close to 100% , and then the player recovers.
1 Oct 2011, 17:47 pm
Best replacement, if needed: Hennie Danillar.
1 Oct 2011, 17:58 pm
Zane Kirchner has already been called up. Frans Steyn is on his way home.
1 Oct 2011, 18:02 pm
@Jinx2(Jinx2)-45: Jaco Taute. He’ll be the Bok fullback by next year anyway. You heard it from the katman.
1 Oct 2011, 18:08 pm
@>^..^< katman(katman)-47:
Yes, a good candidate. But Kirchener. Too much like Kitchener!
1 Oct 2011, 18:10 pm
Taute is a very good running fullback but his kicking game is non existent!
1 Oct 2011, 18:11 pm
He got some big line kicks away today. And he’s pretty good at up and unders, although 4 out of 5 times he’ll prefer to run it up. Which is cool with me.
1 Oct 2011, 18:38 pm
Realistically we all know that we have very little chance of winning the world cup. We have scrapped two narrow wins and only now face the real contenders. It is 50/50 and bounce of the ball on the day. We have been a pretty average side for about 18 months and things don’t just change overnight. Although we all would LOVE to win the trophy – we are realists, whether Steyn was playing or not.
1 Oct 2011, 19:04 pm
Agreed, Gumboots. But tell me, which team do you think is out of reach of the Boks ? Australia, who got a slapping from such a poor nation as Ireland ? France ? England ? Come on, apart from NZ, all the other teams can be beaten by our boys. So, yes, we do have a strong chance of keeping the cup home, as this tournament is to be the most average one in a long time.
1 Oct 2011, 19:15 pm
@frenchiebokfan(frenchiebokfan)-52:
Mate it would be great to bring the trophy home, but Oz won’t be easy pickings come quarters, then NZ. Two tough games in a row. We haven’t been convincing at all. It was tough against Somoa – very tough and they are a second tier team.
1 Oct 2011, 19:34 pm
if carter is out, and we can get thru oz, nz are definitely beatable.
1 Oct 2011, 19:38 pm
@frenchiebokfan(frenchiebokfan)-52: I agree no team looks that impressive. I think there is far to much rugby during a World Cup Year all the unions are greedy. The top teams look jaded. Players are playing hurt. There is not way Samoa should be running the boks so close or Russia score 20 plus points against Australia or the US getting within 10 points of Ireland etc etc.
1 Oct 2011, 20:05 pm
i don’t wish injury on any springbok but if it has to be a Steyn then why couldn’t it have been the kak Steyn?
1 Oct 2011, 20:42 pm
the standard of world rugby has risen dramatically, look at the forward pack produced these days, they all can mix it with the big boys, and they also now have the coaches and structures that professionalism brings.
there are very few weaknesses in any of the major teams these days.
carter going down is huge tho, because its one position they have no real backup, wipes 20% of the AB value immediately.
1 Oct 2011, 21:33 pm
This is a huge loss for boks. Makes the mountain so much steeper to climb.
1 Oct 2011, 21:40 pm
Oh my lord. It gets worse.
Kirchner replaces Frans.
1 Oct 2011, 21:44 pm
@I am a stormer(I am a stormer)-59:
Would rather have had Meisiekind. (only joking)
Or Sadie, Daniller, Goosen, Ebersohn.
What is Pdiv thinking?
Clearly he isn’t.
And he’ll probably play Kirchner at 13. Or something stupid.
1 Oct 2011, 21:49 pm
@I am a stormer(I am a stormer)-60:
Even Marius Joubert
1 Oct 2011, 21:57 pm
@Jinx2(Jinx2)-61:
Kiwis are saying Carter is now out. Injuries to the stars are becoming crazy.
1 Oct 2011, 21:59 pm
@I am a stormer(I am a stormer)-62:
Time for a JW Black Label to send him on his way.
1 Oct 2011, 22:37 pm
@I am a stormer(I am a stormer)-59: Clearly a political replacement. Kirchner has no hope in hell of playing in any of the knockout games. Even if Lambie is injured they will select Aplon ahead of Kirchner at 15. As for centre cover, De Jongh will slot in if JDV or Jaque injured.
1 Oct 2011, 22:44 pm
@kwas(kwas)-64:
Agreed. Lambie is now the no. 1 FB in the sqaud with Gio as adequate cover.
My concern is that we only have 3 centres in the squad, but 4 wings.
I would have rather sent another centre across eg Sadie or Ebersohn.
1 Oct 2011, 22:50 pm
I thinking it might not have been a bad thing that we lost to Ireland. Books minus steyn and blacks minus Carter, just think bok fans, if you win this world cup no one will ever say you didn’t earn it
1 Oct 2011, 23:08 pm
@I am a stormer(I am a stormer)-65: As I said, they needed a political replacement and Sadie/Ebersohn is not. We all know Sadie is superior to the other rubbish available, with Kirchner the worst choice possible.
1 Oct 2011, 23:13 pm
@SAussie/QldRed(SAussie)-66: Blacks will take the Cup without Carter. However, without Richie they will struggle as he is the true warrior.
1 Oct 2011, 23:16 pm
@I am a stormer(I am a stormer)-59: Where did you hear that? My lord these guys have no idea. Kirchner adds zero value. Theyre so one dimensional.
Dammit.
1 Oct 2011, 23:16 pm
The loss of Frans is devastating for the Boks. I think that has significantly reduced our chances of winning the RWC. Frans brought new shape to the backline. His distribution skills are excellent. 10 times better than JdV. Dirty Samoans. Probably on the ABs payrolls to injury the Boks big playmakers.
Contrary to what people think of Morne he is actually essential to our RWC campaign. His goal-kicking is vital to winning a championship like this. With Frans on his outside Morne looked far more comfortable. We will not win this RWC with that carthorse JdV. Absolutely gutted for Frans Steyn. Fans deserve to see the best players performing on the biggest stage. I would like to know if a Samoan clothesline tackle damaged his shoulder.
Its blatantly a Aus/NZ conspiracy to put the Boks in a group with two Islander teams yet again! They’ve succeeded in ensuring the wheels fall off for us. Can’t De Jongh take over from Steyn? Anyone but JdV. I’ve lost all faith in him since seeing Frans playing at 12.
1 Oct 2011, 23:20 pm
Dan Carter ruled out of rest of Rugby World Cup – injuries are diluting this cup radically as well as all the mismatches.
1 Oct 2011, 23:22 pm
@Samba Bok(JayDaFiveOh)-70: Well was just saying on the injury front Sa in comparison to Oz and NZ are looking a lot better in general. Depending of course on news of JP and Houghaard and Bakkies. Losing Steyn is a huge loss but at least we have some form a repalcement. If Jean plays I´m not sure what will happen – anyone notice he is the one that was the last line of defence in the Samoan try? Couldnt get under Stowers to deny him or ruck him back. At least JP ripped the ball in that near miss try for Samoa when the guy lost it. Direct result of JP ripping the ball. Legend.
1 Oct 2011, 23:31 pm
@Slumtown(Slumtown)-72: How many times has JPP saved our ***?! Good grief. He is Mr reliable 9 out of 10 times. JdV is a poor defender given his size. I think De Jongh is a better tackler than him and he is half his size.
I cannot understand how Kirchner can be called up. He hasn’t played any international rugby this year and is mr butterfingers. What about Sias? Good god SA is incredibly short on talent at no.12. We should be producing at least 3 Frans Steyns every few years.
2 Oct 2011, 05:50 am
@Slumtown(Slumtown)-72:
Are you having a zarnie on Kidd’s beach again?
2 Oct 2011, 21:31 pm
Frans is a blow. I the closest we will get to replacing him is with Butch at 12 Jean on the wing and JP at fullback. I think we will then have the physicality required.
Have your say
