Carter and McCaw crocked again
1 Oct 2011
Richie McCaw is out of Sunday’s Test against Canada but the word is Dan Carter could be out of the World Cup.
New Zealand’s first Test Centurion and regular captain Richie McCaw again was forced to withdraw because of the troublesome foot injury which has hindered his game time all season. McCaw has played two of the three World Cup matches, but pulled up in the week of the Japan match, and despite training this week felt he would be risking further damage by playing against Canada.
He confirmed that if it was a play-off match he would play through the pain.
Carter was originally named captain after McCaw’s withdrawal, but New Zealand news reports later in the day were that Colin Slade had replaced Carter and that a groin injury had threatened to end Carter’s tournament.
Marc Hinton, on Rugbyheaven.co.nz, wrote McCaw’s injury stems from the operation he had on the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot in February and he revealed the sore limb has had to be managed throughout the year.
His decision to withdraw, he said, was because it was still ‘a bit niggly’.
He maintained that if the Canada fixture was a sudden-death match he would have been fit to play.
‘It is something I have managed all through the year. I got through training yesterday fine. I wanted to get ready for next week – that is why this decision has been made.
‘I was pretty keen to play but with the knockout match next week I wanted to be ready to go.
‘It was a bit frustrating but it is a niggle I have dealt with for a while.”
Victor Vito will start as open side.

He’s played with the niggle all year, so there’s no point in risking aggravation in a nothing match. A sensible move on Ted’s part. McCaw’s got his 100 on the scoreboard, so now he’ll be used sparingly.

Smart move. IRB don’t hand out medals for playing on injured.

@Kobus Kitty(Kobus Kitty)-2: Cant help yourself eh, miserable p rick

McCaw, playing with a sore foot, is still the world’s best openside flanker. Imagine how stellar he’d be without that sore foot!

As for Carter being out of the tournament, well– that was a tremendous thumbsuck, boys! Carter will sit out the nothing game v Canada and resume duty for the QFs.

There’s a shame.

Bad news for the ABs… Both great players… both VIP players for the ABs…
May they both recover in time for next week…!!

if carter goes into the semi game with a niggle it could blow up for them.
huge loss.

1995 = Suzie
2007 = Wayne Barnes
2011 = Injuries
Yep, they allready have their ducks in a row when it comes to excusses.

@TheTackler(TheTackler)-7:
How is he the best? You just going to state things as fact? He isn’t even on the radar.
1 Oct 2011, 15:00 pm
Is it just me or is everyone else missing the tongue-in-cheek style report here? Surely you’re not all lapping this up?
1 Oct 2011, 15:08 pm
NZ losing Carter will only be half as bad as the Boks losing Frans.
1 Oct 2011, 15:42 pm
Personally I’d rather McCaw stay on. He is a penalty machine that offers nothing. But Carter out will be good. Collin Slade or that fat diabetic Weepoo playing at flyhalf in a knock out game. Now all we need is some Sonny Bench at 12.
1 Oct 2011, 17:13 pm
@Kobus Kitty(Kobus Kitty)-21: better than anything the bok backline has to offer.
1 Oct 2011, 18:42 pm
@Kobus Kitty(Kobus Kitty)-21: McCaw offers nothing??? With a statement like that one cannot really take anything you say seriously.
1 Oct 2011, 20:10 pm
@TheAgent(TheAgent)-20:
Living in denial much? Don’t kid your self, the Boks have more than enough depth at center with de Jong and JDV and dont rule out Butch James who is also a very capable but should the ABs loose Carter( and I dont wish an injury on any player) that would send alarm bells ringing through out NZ.

@Kobus Kitty(Kobus Kitty)-21:
Dont be silly.
1 Oct 2011, 20:49 pm
DC gone.
1 Oct 2011, 21:03 pm
Wow. The worst move the NZRU has made in the last 4 years is not begging Nick Evans to come back.
1 Oct 2011, 21:05 pm
My suspicion is that if Carter can eve stand up straight, he’ll play. Weepu will be the goalkicker.
1 Oct 2011, 21:47 pm
Would rather see Dagg at 10, weepu to cover. Slade can watch from a pub
1 Oct 2011, 21:49 pm
Agent – the alarm bells have rung themselves raw. We’re in deep **** without DC. Could be the beginning of the end.
S hit happens
1 Oct 2011, 21:50 pm
@KiaKahaNZ(KiaKahaNZ)-26:
You’re not serious.
Would be a huge blow.
1 Oct 2011, 21:52 pm
@KiaKahaNZ(KiaKahaNZ)-30: Is this confirmed or just a rumour? Still 2 weeks – he does not have to play this weekend. And semis is really most important.
Terrible blow for NZ.
Worse than us losing Steyn.
Rugby is getting very hard, especially knock out rugby.
1 Oct 2011, 21:53 pm
Looks like a 3-8 week recovery period, groin strain level 2, . If we make it to the final, it would be a squeeze to see him there.
Our biggest fear has happened
1 Oct 2011, 21:55 pm
@KiaKahaNZ(KiaKahaNZ)-33: They will put him in an oxygen tank and feed him whatever it takes. Bad news.
For NZ.
1 Oct 2011, 21:56 pm
@KiaKahaNZ(KiaKahaNZ)-33: 2 weeks is a long recovery time. They know what they are doing.
1 Oct 2011, 22:00 pm
Soda – he did it practicing his goal kicking, That it was available to the public to see is either well orchestrated or genuine bad luck. Goal kicking aside, it’s his control of the game, decision making, we will miss the most.
1 Oct 2011, 22:04 pm
Hey , it could well be a great cover up, with some confidence of not having to play him against Arg next weekend and save for SA/Aus if we get there. Henry is capable of masterminding a few cunning stunts
1 Oct 2011, 22:17 pm
@KiaKahaNZ(KiaKahaNZ)-37:
Just hope it is not as bad as feared. We want to beat your best remember.
1 Oct 2011, 22:40 pm
There is no gaurantee that with Carter NZ would win the world cup but to say (as some like keo are) that they cannot win it without him is ridiculous. The All Blacks have a very solid tight 5 a world class loose trio, one of the best centre combinations the best attacking full back in the world and pretty good wingers. If Carter does not play it is a big blow for them but certainly not insurmountable.
1 Oct 2011, 23:09 pm
Definitely OUT !! Cruden has been called in. DC will not take any further part in the RWC2011
1 Oct 2011, 23:11 pm
Massive, massive blow. Cruden already called into the squad. I can only imagine the amount that will be consumed in NZ tonight.
NZ has just the one player it couldn’t afford to lose.
1 Oct 2011, 23:13 pm
BREAKING NEWS: Dan Carter is out of the World Cup.
The All Blacks first five-eighths has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament because of the groin injury he suffered at yesterday’s captains run and Colin Slade will now be expected to wear the No 10 jersey.
Manawatu’s Aaron Cruden has been brought into the squad.
1 Oct 2011, 23:18 pm
DC out, nothing we can do about that. A blow to the team synergy sure, still believe we have the dept to cover this loss. Adversity ultimately brings out the best in those that are left to continue the fight. Still believe we are on track to overcome this setback and will go on to challenge England for the title.
Have your say
