Boks get Bryce

Boks get Bryce

New Zealand’s Bryce Lawrence will referee South Africa’s World Cup quarter-final against Australia in Wellington on Sunday.

Lawrence was in charge when Ireland beat Australia in the Pool Stages earlier in the tournament. He was particularly severe on the Australian scrum.

South African Craig Joubert will whistle the opening quarter-final between Wales and Ireland. Steve Walsh will officiate England v France in Auckland at 20:30.

10 Referees and two TMOs retained for knockout matches

A panel of 10 Referees and two specialist Television Match Officials (TMO) have been selected from the panel of 21 officials in action during the Pool Stages.

Nigel Owens, despite the Samoan criticism of his performance in the match involving the Boks, has also been retained and will referee New Zealand’s match against Argentina.

Full referee play-off list
Wayne Barnes (England), George Clancy (Ireland), Craig Joubert (South Africa), Jonathan Kaplan (South Africa), Bryce Lawrence (New Zealand), Nigel Owens (Wales), Dave Pearson (England), Romain Poite (France), Alain Rolland (Ireland) and Steve Walsh (Australia) will perform Referee and Assistant Referee duties. Giulio De Santis (Italy) and Shaun Veldsman (South Africa) have been selected as the two specialist TMOs.

@TheTackler(TheTackler)-2: suppose it seems fair that NZ get Owens since you guys thought he was so rough on the poor little Samoans – LOL, can’t wait.

    pssssssssst

    Paddy

    looks like you got

    ‘the email’

    good work, fella

    Brycie will “get them”

and he’s been absolutely regimented in his enforcement of the offside-line too, just like you said he should be.

I wonder where the Boks backline will score now, then.

    And

    hey, Brycie.

watch out for the theatrics from Heinrecho Ronaldo and co. Theyre dropping like flies.

@Black Panther(Black Panther)-5: hey panty, have a look at your ref. I would take BL anyday over that prick. Saurez Mc Caw is teatering on the injury edge. I am sure one of those tough Argies my just help him along while Nigel “I never saw that” Owens looks directly on…

Bryce had no love for the aussies ..having said that he does really like the boks either.

  • 9.aliboy: Reply to this comment

How the F— did Owens get into the final ref group, and WTF did he get the NZ/Arg game? Only Barnes might have been worse. They could have easily used another SH ref for the game. Owens is such a ‘hormonal’ fool that who knows what he will do.

With his foot acting up i wouldn’t be surprised if this is Richies last game of the tournament the Argies know they are going home so they’ll be in going hard

Who remembers Bryce’s “Dangerous scrumming” call against the Sharks?

Tsk tsk, had to be an anzac. Suppose it is better than that gimp Nigel Owens.

    @JamesNkomo(JamesNkomo)-7:

Rest assured, the field wont be full of Windmills at Eden Park, so Owens should have much better vision as a result.

  • 15.husky: Reply to this comment

Hmmm, not too optimistic with Paddy’s little chum as the ref.

  • 16.HongKongSlong: Reply to this comment

Was Shaun Veldsmen the TMO in the Ireland Italy game? If so that is possibly the biggest disgrace of the lot, how a TMO could not give a penalty try for Tommy Bowe being tackled without the ball just before he was about to dot down is scandalous! Refs miss things, TMO’s should not.

Guys seriously – we have won.

Bryce hates the Aussies – he screws them every chance he gets. Before the Ireland game I thought there was no way they could win with Bryce…and i was right.

Bokkies against NZ in the Semi.

    @Staal(Staal)-20:

wouldnt that criteria also rule out Craig Joubert, Steve Walsh, Nigel Owens, and Wayne Barnes ?!

M.Lawrence has real empathy for the game, his matches tend to be fair and open.

SA rugby fans are too caught up in petty provincialism, conspiracies and persecution theories to know a decent ref when they see one. Kaplan was a good ref but he seems to have slowed a little and exhibiting less authority than he used to.

You guys (Bok supporters) should be over the moon with this appointment. Bryce Lawrence will potentially be the most influential player in any Bok victory (which is still unlikely). If you want some proof just have a look at the odds being offered anywhere in the world when this appointment was made. Boks came in but still outsiders. Either way, don’t believe what you read: inside word is the Aussies actually happier playing the Boks than the Welsh. If the Boks with a full side can’t be the Aussies on home turf what chance on a fine day in NZ? Could even be a blow out.

no bill, your scrum will be the influential factor in any bok victory.
that and the tight, the tight loose, the rucks, the contact…and so on…basically everything to do with our forwards and yours…

  • 28.Green man: Reply to this comment

Brycie cannot keep up with the play and a lot of guesswork at scrum time.

  • 29.BillMcConnell: Reply to this comment

reechie maak so lank die pan warm, bakkies bring die wors – you may be right but only to a point. Recent games between us has proven your forward dominance is a thing of the past. At the rucks, in the loose and the contest will be basically between the two 7s but Pocock to dominate (again). As for the rest, good to have faith – but that’s all you got mate.

Australia’s scrum completely dominated the Bok one in both 3N tests this year. SA’s scrum is weak.

  • 34.David: Reply to this comment

So far, Craig Joubert has been the most impressive ref at the WC, in my opinion.

  • 35.Horings: Reply to this comment

Where can you bet on who the ref will be for the Semis?

Bryce Lawrence, Paddy O Brien and Allain Rolland are all crucial to this conspiracy. I will bet you my house that Allain Rolland will get the All Black semi against SA/ Aus.

I do not see us getting into trouble playing the Wallabies. As a Bulls supporter I have noticed that Genia, the Reds and Wallabies apply their gameplan in much the same way the Bulls do. They rely on their big runners who runs smart angles around Genia to get go forward ball. this ensures Cooper gets a bit of space. The way they use their backline differs from the way the Bulls use theirs, obviously, but the forward dominating in the collisions is a big part of both teams’ success. The problem with this approach is that you need to manage your players well to peak at the right times of the season. The Reds peaked at the right time, and the Wallabies fed of that in pretty much the same way the Boks obtained success in 2009. But if you go back to 2009, the Bulls looked weak in their semi againt Province, and they should have lost. the Boks were also terrible at the end year tour. The same applies to the Wallabies World Cup campaign. they are struggling to get go forward ball from their loosies and locks and while they may beat the Boks in a once off, they will not get up for three difficult games in a row.

  • 42.Horings: Reply to this comment

I think Ireland will win that one. they have got the same strong points than Wales, except for Leadership Experience, A proven goal kicker in tough situations and the success Munster and Leinster had in finals over the last decade will help them tremendously. There defense is also exceptional and to hold out the Aussies for 80 minutes is quite an achievement. Another thing that would worry me if I were the Welsh is their discipline at the breakdown, because Craig Joubert will punish them there. He is quite strict on players not rolling away.

Must say I am impressed by the faith you boys are showing in the Boks to get over the Wallabies. “Facts be damned and man the torpedoes” kinda stuff. 5 of the last 6 games between the two you lost (admittedly one with a “b” side). But the Boks used to never lose at home – Wallabies done you twice there lately. Your tight five is a step-and-a-half slower than use to be, props not a touch on the old guard (Ox etc) Smit not the player he was and FdP has also gone backwards. Aging team much like the Wallabies in 1995 will suffer the same result.

As with most games between the SANZAR sides they start 50/50. History doesn’t determine the future in this case as Australias loss to Samoa and lately Ireland shows.

Not good news this. Bryce not a great ref but then after the horrendous reffing from Owens, Bryce will look world class…. haha.

Serious though no sh ref should be reffing our side of this tourney. Just don’t seem right. Then only really rate Clancy from the north. Could we not have got Joubert?…….hehehe.

Really hope Bryce can blow this one fair for both sides. Just don’t rate this ref at all.

@WP_(WP_)-41: It could happen. Would be kinda weird after 2007 us facing our first opponents in our pool game in the final.

Ireland are playing good rugby though. They started off not great but getting better all the time. Will be interesting to see who wins that game.

JA BP I’m a Bok supporter and can’t understand the ref bashing going on. Bryce is a good ref but because he is probably a cut above the rest he picks up a lot of “illegal” play the others don’t. This doesn’t mean he hates the Aussies or the Saffa’s, it means he is on top of his game. Probably the best at the tournament although I also like Craig Joubert and Alian Roland. Can’t help but think all the comments are designed to “influence” the ref on the understanding he reads the blogs.
