Willie le Roux and Lappies Labuschagne have finally been rewarded with spots in the Springbok training group. They are two of eight that are first timers in Springbok training groups this year. The others are Gio Aplon, Trevor Nyakane, JJ Engelbrecht, Lionel Mapoe, Wiehahn Herbst and Demetri Catrakilis. The group of players will assemble in Durban for the second training camp of the year, before the final squad for the Incoming Tours is selected. Players not considered due to injury include: JP Pietersen, Jaco Taute, Frans Steyn, Johan Goosen, Duane Vermeulen, Pat Cilliers and Frans Malherbe. ... Read Article25 May 2013
Morne Steyn kicked 18 points to beat the Sharks and end the hosts Super Rugby play-off aspirations. The Sharks looked to have conjured up a remarkable victory when Charl McLeod scored and Pat Lambie converted in the 75th minute. But within two minutes the Sharks were guilty of a lineout infringement and Steyn punished the lack of discipline. The Sharks had opportunities to sneak the victory in a frantic finish but lacked the decision-making to turn a possession and field position advantage into victory. The Bulls, thanks to Steyn's kicking, consolidated their position at the top of the ... Read Article25 Apr 2013
Jan Serfontein, the player of last year's under 20 World Championship, will head the baby Boks defence in France. Serfontein and Kings wing Sergeal Petersen are two Super Rugby regulars to make Dawie Theron's squad and brilliant flyhalf Handre Pollard is another to play in a second successive tournament. Theron's squad lost a three-match series 2-1 to Argentina in Argentina. Serfontein, Petersen and Western Province's Cheslin Kolbe did not play in those matches. Bulls loose forward Ruan Steenkamp is captain. Serfontein and Pollard are the only two squad members from last year's ... Read Article14 May 2013
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has selected several uncapped Blues players in his training group. Hansen confirmed 38 names and this included many from the potent Blues backline. The Highlanders, despite only winning one match in this year's Super Rugby competition, have six players in the group. An obvious area of weakness is at hooker where Hansen has selected veterans Andrew Hore and Keven Mealamu and Canes Dane Coles. Options are limited and it certainly is a concern for New Zealanders. No overseas-based players were considered, as it is NZRFU policy. Among the uncapped players ... Read Article15 May 2013
French coach Philipe Saint-Andre has included three South African-born players for the three-Test series against the All Blacks in New Zealand. Racing Metro flank Bernard le Roux and Clermont prop Daniel Kotze join Antonie Claassen in a squad that includes eight new caps. Fijian-born Clermont winger Noa Nakaitaci is among the newcomers. Saint-Andre has rested flyhalf Francois Trinh-Duc, but included Toulon's Frederic Michalak. France play world champions New Zealand on June 8, 15 and 22 in Auckland, Hamilton and New Plymouth respectively. French super club Toulon's foreign dominance ... Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article6 Oct 2011

Jobs actually got the idea for drag and drop from the Xerox PARC labs, although anyone whoever saw the Xerox Star, which had it, would realise that there’s a world of difference between it and the Apple Lisa, which was Apples first GUI attempt.

@Slumtown(Slumtown)-291: Good thinking there ST. That would be a insane loose trio. NO team would live with those 3. Heck doubt Pocock will see anything…lol. You are totally spot on there. If Brussow is playing with a niggle move Burger to 8, Flo to 7 with Brussow. Brilliant. Also say bring on Bissie for the 2nd half. Man we gonna mess them up. If we have those loosies with Bissie. Just a pity Beast is not on the bench.
Good post ST.

I agree 100%.
Its a tragedy that Smitty is in the Bok 22 team, never mind the starting line up.
In fact its a f-ucking disgrace
6 Oct 2011, 11:47 am
They always go so overboard in their opinions.
I mean, James could do fine as a sub. He covers center, he covers 10. He can pass, he can kick. So he’s not Quade Cooper. Does that mean he can’t play on the bench? No. Does it mean it’s a horrible choice to put him there? No.
Of course people can argue he should start in front of Steyn, but this histerics just because James is on the bench is ridiculous.

I’ve never seen myself as overly sensitive, just don’t agree that disrespecting others whether online, in public, private, at workplace, on the sports field or wherever is appropriate.
I didn’t ask if you’d insult people face to face as that is easy to do, even kids do it.
But decency sit nie in almal se broek ni.

@wpstormerbok(wpstormerbok)-303: He is an electronic producer for Warp records – but lately his stuff is pretty much like Gramatik – every single album he released has been total quality. Really made his name with Smokers Delight but the later albums are more in this Gramatik style. He also has his own label Wax on records. Its more chilled out but has so many references and nods to great funk and jazz artists – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W98wCG5jyGI&feature=related

As for Jobs, sorry I have to cut and paste from wiki, I hate doing it but…
Jobs was awarded the National Medal of Technology by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 with Steve Wozniak (among the first people to ever receive the honor), and a Jefferson Award for Public Service in the category “Greatest Public Service by an Individual 35 Years or Under” (also known as the Samuel S. Beard Award) in 1987. On November 27, 2007, Jobs was named the most powerful person in business by Fortune Magazine.
On November 5, 2009, Jobs was named the CEO of the decade by Fortune Magazine. In September 2011, Jobs was ranked No.17 on Forbes: The World’s Most Powerful People. In December 2010, the Financial Times named Jobs its person of the year for 2010, ending its essay by stating, “In his autobiography, John Sculley, the former PepsiCo executive who once ran Apple, said this of the ambitions of the man he had pushed out: ‘Apple was supposed to become a wonderful consumer products company. This was a lunatic plan. High-tech could not be designed and sold as a consumer product.’ How wrong can you be”

I feel we will bring him on after the break.
6 Oct 2011, 11:57 am
@Puma(Puma)-308: Thanks – just hope they consider this and not only think of Francois Louw as a replacement in case Heinrich gets injured. If the tactic is to starve Oz of the ball then that is as mean as it gets. Perhaps the only other thing you could do is put Alberts on in Tandem with Rossouw but theyre never going to sub Matfield. But that would be really insane. I doubt the Ozzies would see any ball. Its all about selection and combinations and i´m glad to see that they have been very open this World Cup as evidenced by Frans Steyn repalcing Jean after just 1 great game, by the willingess to get Houghaard involved and keeping Lambie at 15. Perhaps Rassie is having a bigger influence than we may know? Either way at least we can see the thinking is not static and having Louw on the bench instead of 2 props is evidence of this. They have quite rightly identified Pocock as the danger man. the backs are lethal and theres not much we can do about that except starve them of ball. Only way to do that is dominate set pieces and breakdown. So I´m hoping thats the thinking. We must nullify their backs if we want to win this one. look at the Samoa game – a guy like Tuilagi is only effective if given space and ball – otherwise he was the least of our worries – in fact he harldy figured in the game.

6 Oct 2011, 11:59 am
@David(David)-314:
True, David.
First and foremost the bench is Insurance.
6 Oct 2011, 11:59 am
@cab(cab)-292: please do the “forensic searching” if you must.
Despite that, you alone seem to have taken my initial general challenge very personally… And all you have done since is try to deflect the attention away from yourself by hurling insults at me and making (baseless) allegations. That says a lot.
Do you feel guilty about something? Do you feel bad that you now personally criticise John Smit (with the mob) every day like a broken record?
I say it again: Whatever happened in the previous 4 years, the RWC is the culmination of all of that, the Boks have made it their main goal. It is too late to change anything now, and you and me have no influence whatsoever over team selection or tactics. So why gnash your teeth in dismay? Get behind your team and take the win, or the loss.
But it is the positioning that gets to me… too many people lining themselves up for a big “I told you so” should the Boks fail… no way can they be fully behind the team (when they don’t even support the captain), I bet when the score starts turning against the Boks a part of themselves starts willing on the defeat just so that they can say “I told you so.”
A sort of mini triumph in defeat.

@Puma(Puma)-311: I agree.
It is a big relief that Keo bloggers and journalists are not picking the Bok 22.
And I include myself in that category.
To all bloggers and journalists – please support our Boks, in POSITIVE fashion, whether or not you agree with the team. It is my team, my country, and I will not tolerate negative critique to my beloved Boks that will not do their chances any good.
6 Oct 2011, 12:01 pm
@Puma(Puma)-320: My reckoning is he´s there as insurance in case Morne gets injured because Lambie hasnt had enough time at 10 for such a high pressure game. You dont want to be relying on him with 60 minutes on the clock – not saying he cant do it but its a huge gamble if Morne picks up and early injury and second in all likeliness he will replace Jean if Jean doesnt pick his game up. Theyve identified Jean as problematic after Steyn illuminated what can happen if the 12 distributes the ball and tries to step. So I think his inclusion was a good one tactically. Obviously youd rather have de Jongh as a sub for 12 but Butch gives that extra insurance for 10.
6 Oct 2011, 12:01 pm
@ufo(ufo)-323: I know just can’t understand why some always have to resort to insults.

I try to keep it civil when in debate with people, how other people interact with each other shouldn’t be my problem you’re right.
6 Oct 2011, 12:03 pm
One thing that is beyond a shadow of a doubt is that if we lose on Saturday, John Smit’s reputation will be completely ruined, as will the positive memories of what he has achieved to date.
The public will absolutely crucify him, with me carrying a burning torch in the front ranks of the mob.
He has insisted on continuing as captain – in the face of massive public criticism, and for him more than anyone else, it comes down to “judge me on the World Cup”.
We all know Divvy is k*k, and we don’t expect much of him. But John has a much bigger reputation that’s at stake. And personally I think he misjudged the impact this would have on his legacy, or else he was blinded by his own overestimation of his abilties.
For his sake, and ours, let’s hope the Boks can pull it through. But more so for his sake, because this WILL ruin everything for him if we are unsuccesfull.

Good comments Ryan re: Smit – his inclusion in the start is all the more baffling given his diabolical performance – DIABOLICAL – not to mention irresponsible – against Samoa: on for three minutes, gives away free kick on slow lineout throw and yellow-carded for kicking ball way after conceding a penalty.
The only thing you can say is he can’t play impact and at least Bismarck will come on instead of him, if you see what I mean. As long as it is not too late.
