Mitchell says no to Bok post

Lions coach John Mitchell says he won’t apply for Springbok coaching job.

Following the Boks’ early World Cup exit, coach Peter de Villiers said that he won’t be continuing with the team post 2011. Saru has also announced that they will begin the head coach selection process after the World Cup has concluded on 23 October.

Rassie Erasmus, Allister Coetzee, Brendan Venter, John Plumtree and Heyneke Meyer have all been mentioned as possible candidates. According to Beeld newspaper, Mitchell won’t be throwing his name into the hat.

‘No, I won’t apply,’ said Mitchell, who added that he will be concentrating on his job at the Lions. Mitchell is determined to see out his three-year contract with the Gauteng side.

Victor Matfield said earlier in the week that the Boks would be better off with a South African coach. With Mitchell, a New Zealander and former All Blacks coach, ruling himself out as an option, it’s very likely the next Bok mentor will be South African.

@Alucard(Alucard)-200: Mujati poor? The pack was rubble? Do you actually WATCH rugby? The Lions scrum destroyed teams with Heinke, Willie and Mujati. Why was Rassie so eager to buy Mujati? Those names I listed not a force? You a comedian? I won’t argue with you anymore because you have no clue…. and by the way to close games against SA.
    41-20
    30-23
    52-16
    19-11
    29-9
All NZ wins and 20 tries to 6.
    Nail biting stuff.
    I’m done….

@Great White Shark(Predawn)-13: Gatland not that good? Where are the Boks sitting now? And where are Wales? Not at home that’s for sure. Ofcourse it was going to take him a few years. He had a kak Welsh side to work with and he has transformed them and made them better than the Boks.

And you say GH took a few years. What else did you expect? It takes time to put coaching structures in place but now the ABs have an impeccable record. PdV’s on the other hand removed all coaching structures. So bad was his coaching that the players had to do it themselves.

@grant10(grant10)-3: Very disappointed with this news.

I think we will have to accept the Boks are farked for the next 4 years. Hopefully AC can achieve a better record than PdV and at least he won’t embarrass us when he talks to the media. But skop en jag will persist and the Boks despite having an impressive defence will struggle to close out games they should be easily shutting down.

I still cannot get over how we lost to Aus. We made them our b*tch everywhere on the pitch except at the breakdown. Even with the breakdown debacle we should’ve still scored at least 1 try. It seems the rugby gods were against us that day. If FdP hadn’t been so rattled and kept knocking on we’d be in the semis now.

But it would’ve meant another 4 years of PdV’s non-existent coaching.

Kirwan happy ‘boring’ Boks sent packing
    Craig Ray | 12 October, 2011 21:480 Comments

Now that the Boks are out of the World Cup, the tournament can look forward to attractive rugby.
This is the opinion of former All Black John Kirwan, who coached Japan at the tournament.

Kirwan, who was part of the last All Black team to win the World Cup (1987), is a strong advocate of attractive rugby.

While the Springboks have won admiration for their grim resolve, they earned few plaudits for aesthetically pleasing rugby, something that, in his opinion, the Boks don’t offer.

“The Aussies are the ideal opponents for the All Blacks,” said Kirwan of Sunday’s World Cup semifinal.

“On each side there are players who like to attack,” he said.

“For Australia Quade Cooper and Kurtley Beale, if he plays, love to run with the ball and on the All Blacks side Aaron Cruden, Ma’a Nonu, Sonny Bill Williams and Conrad Smith all try to do the same.

“There is an incredible amount of flair across the park and it will be all about scoring tries.

“It won’t be the same as a big, physical war of attrition against a team like the Springboks.

“One word that sums up South African rugby is ‘brutal’. They are big, physical, strong men who know how to play their game, and when you meet them you know you’re in for a huge test of your physical capabilities.

“The Aussies showed incredible resolve against the Boks and that was a result of losing to Ireland earlier in the tournament.

“They also went into the Bok game with a more defensive mindset because they knew what was going to come at them.

“As a result they became bogged down and weren’t able to play their own game because it’s hard to find that balance when you’re thinking about defence.

“It will be different this weekend because both sides have an attacking mindset.

“It won’t be as brutal as playing against the Boks and, as a result, there will be a little more space to play, which suits both these teams.”

    hehehe… not quite… if sa is so against a foreign coach… but… IMO… kirwan has the goods…

and i agree he’s not negative… i’ve heard him interviewed before and he respects the boks and our dual history…

    @Big Hit(Big Hit)-212:

he wasn’t pushed BH… he said before the cup their goal was to win a match… but either way after the cup he would leave as his contract was up… which is precisely why i’ve been putting his name in the hat…

point is… if we wanna play running, breadth of the fired attractive rugby… few better than kirwan to push those objectives…

He was kicked out of the ABS
    Not good enough

  • 221.TheTackler: Reply to this comment

@Boksarenumber5(Boksarenumber1)-220: Only because he didn’t win the RWC. But NZRU learnt the folly of this approach and so kept Graham Henry on when he too didn’t win RWC at his first try. Mitch won 23 of his 27 tests as AB coach. 85% win rate.

  • 222.TheTackler: Reply to this comment

    @Big Hit(Big Hit)-204: Mitchell’s is 85%, Divvy is 63%. Clear daylight in that ruck.

  • 225.Great White Shark: Reply to this comment

Kiwi coaches take too long to get a team on a winning streak and inevitably fail to get any of their teams past a semi in any of the RWC’s.

That’s a clear and unmitigated black mark in any real winner’s book.

The ledger will read….no RWC trophy and no Tri-nations trophy…but we beat the Northern Hemisphere…whoopeee!

The day the Springboks is coached by a foreign coach is the day South African rugby has turned into pooo.

Never … Ever… should a foreign coach touch the National Team. I find insulting we have foreign coaches on this land to start with including players.

To contemplate this you would be a disgrace to SA rugby.

We have such a large player pool, one of the largest in the world, why do we need foreigners in the first place?

  • 228.Dex: Reply to this comment

Because if they are superior to any of our coaches, like Graham Henry, we should select the best person for the job regardless of nationality.

Another bonus is they won’t have the ridiculous loyalties and political games like pdiv and co have.

There is a report out today that Jake White has been approached by the NZRFU re his availability to coach the AB’s . Apparently things are not as good at The Brumbies ( facilities) as he was led to believe .
My understanding of J Mitchell is that he has personality issues and is of ill temper which he lets loose at his players . He pissed off the Force big time in this way apparently .
Also I have a vague recollection that the SARFU “constitution” states that the Bok coach must be a South African .

Telling the truth about that mob doesn’t necessarily rule out wanting to teach them a few lessons. I doubt he’d want it though – the English media are the most invasive parasites on earth and they have exactly the same pressures as the SH teams, but half the talent.
