Duane Vermeulen is out of the June Tests. Stormers strong man Duane Vermeulen returned home from the Stormers Super Rugby tour because of injury and conservatively won't play again until July. It could be that he is out for the remainder of the Super Rugby season as well because of knee ligament damage. Stormers loose-forward Rynhardt Elstadt is also out for at least six weeks as the Cape-based franchise's season went from bad to worse in Sydney. Vermeulen, Meyer's first choice No 8, will be nursed back to action for the Rugby Championship in August. His injury means a likely Bok start ... Read Article21 May 2013
JP Pietersen is set to miss the remainder of the Super Rugby season. Pietersen left the field of play in the Sharks’ victory over the Force, their final tour game. Pietersen’s scans revealed that the winger, who did duty at outside centre, will require surgery to rectify a groin injury. Pietersen was playing in the 13 jersey following a serious injury to Paul Jordaan and Tim Whitehead not taking part in rugby this season to date. Pietersen’s injury is a big loss for the Sharks, yet the bigger problem is which player will wear the 13 jersey this weekend against the Bulls. The Bulls ... Read Article25 Apr 2013
Jan Serfontein, the player of last year's under 20 World Championship, will head the baby Boks defence in France. Serfontein and Kings wing Sergeal Petersen are two Super Rugby regulars to make Dawie Theron's squad and brilliant flyhalf Handre Pollard is another to play in a second successive tournament. Theron's squad lost a three-match series 2-1 to Argentina in Argentina. Serfontein, Petersen and Western Province's Cheslin Kolbe did not play in those matches. Bulls loose forward Ruan Steenkamp is captain. Serfontein and Pollard are the only two squad members from last year's ... Read Article14 May 2013
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has selected several uncapped Blues players in his training group. Hansen confirmed 38 names and this included many from the potent Blues backline. The Highlanders, despite only winning one match in this year's Super Rugby competition, have six players in the group. An obvious area of weakness is at hooker where Hansen has selected veterans Andrew Hore and Keven Mealamu and Canes Dane Coles. Options are limited and it certainly is a concern for New Zealanders. No overseas-based players were considered, as it is NZRFU policy. Among the uncapped players ... Read Article15 May 2013
French coach Philipe Saint-Andre has included three South African-born players for the three-Test series against the All Blacks in New Zealand. Racing Metro flank Bernard le Roux and Clermont prop Daniel Kotze join Antonie Claassen in a squad that includes eight new caps. Fijian-born Clermont winger Noa Nakaitaci is among the newcomers. Saint-Andre has rested flyhalf Francois Trinh-Duc, but included Toulon's Frederic Michalak. France play world champions New Zealand on June 8, 15 and 22 in Auckland, Hamilton and New Plymouth respectively. French super club Toulon's foreign dominance ... Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article14 Oct 2011

@wpstormerbok(wpstormerbok)-46: But the interesting point in that: IRB should prove the match wasn’t fixed.
14 Oct 2011, 10:39 am
@Big Hit(Big Hit)-49:
Those are big statements. If it’s true or not we’ll never know.
Don’t think I’ll watch the game again any time soon, I just keep having flashbacks of Bryce standing there, staring Pocock in the eyes while he has his hands deep in a ruck.
But it’s done so whatever we say after the fact won’t change the result.
14 Oct 2011, 10:42 am
@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-51:
You know exactly how that one’s gonna end.
The Boks will be painted as the new villians of World Rugby, all over again.
Maybe if it happened to England there would’ve been a major shake up.
14 Oct 2011, 10:44 am
We don’t have a coach in South Africa that can take us to the next level. We’re too naive when it comes to tactics and game plans. We get out-thought every time by the Ausies and ABs when it comes down to tactics. Passion and commitment can only take you so far.

@pakslae(pakslae)-54:
@pakslae(pakslae)-54:
I think what Jake White in 2007 and PdV 2011 WC showed is that we’re better when our coaches are in the role of a manager/motivater with highly skilled assistants working with the backline/forwards/defence/analysis.
I’d say it’s pretty difficult to find one head coach who can excell at all these disciplines in any part of the World, such a guy will probably have 20+ years of top level coaching experience.
14 Oct 2011, 10:58 am
@vasteses(vasteses)-55:
@wpstormerbok(wpstormerbok)-52: I see your point, but unless the truth is uncovered then it can happen again and again, the sport of rugby union doesn’t need that.
14 Oct 2011, 11:11 am
@wpstormerbok(wpstormerbok)-52:
I laughed my *** off at point, Pocock not on his feet, clear ruck formed with one of his big mits on the ball. Fourie shouting at Bryce that pocock is slowing down the ball, Bryce, staring at pocock and fourie, and eventually just shrugs his shoulders and pocock eventually releases the ball after the entire aus defence has realigned.
14 Oct 2011, 11:14 am
Ryan, I know you’re not aware of it but your blue and white striped petticoat is sticking out so far in most of your posts that I’m surprised you don’t step on the bloody thing. “All that talent” you mention just happens to include 6 Province players (from 9 names)? I know you live down here and you support the guys, but a little balance and objectivity could see your credibility skyrocket.
14 Oct 2011, 11:20 am
@vasteses(vasteses)-55:
You can’t compare Currie Cup with international rugby.
@wpstormerbok(wpstormerbok)-56:
Bringing in Eddie Jones was a masterstroke by Jake White.
For South African rugby to be tops again we need to get the cheque book out and get the best guys available.
14 Oct 2011, 11:32 am
@wpstormerbok(wpstormerbok)-53: i also don’t think an investigation is necessary, plus this whole premise of “it is the IRB’s duty to prove there was no match fixing” is just ridiculous, it’s kind of like how some bloggers like to declare a player “world class” and then say it is up to everyone else to prove he isn’t…
whoever suspects “match-fixing” must do the “proving” or SHUT UP
14 Oct 2011, 11:34 am
@wpstormerbok(wpstormerbok)-56: yes jake had more consultants than Black Panty has told “fibby fib fibs”
14 Oct 2011, 11:42 am
@Transformation(Transformation)-63:
It’s amazing that we actually managed to win a Tri Nations and BI Lions tour with a coaching team of Pdivvy, **** and Gold.
We should’ve dominated and should still be dominating world rugby with the talent we have.
14 Oct 2011, 11:49 am
@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-51:
Maybe you should ask your team if it was fixed?
I heard Hansie Cronje was seen in the chaging room 10 mins before the game
Come on this is really silly. Maybe we should see if the 3 antions in 2009 was fixed as well.
Just cos of a loss and bad decision making from a ref does not mean its been fixed.
14 Oct 2011, 11:54 am
@pakslae(pakslae)-64: there’s nothing “amazing” about it the team “dominated” in 2009 winning 5 out of 6 tri-nations. now i’m not saying the three stooges are the beez kneez but this idea that jake was some rugby genius and the stooges the opposite is misguided and bullshit at best.
14 Oct 2011, 11:57 am
There’s nothing wrong with being conservative. But there is something wrong with being dysfunctional. That is the real issue Keo! You can play a variety of styles and win. de Villiers problem was that he never understood the value of his players nor was he able to get anything working in the backs. Okay, much of that had to do with donkey Jean, but still. He was technically flawed. you cannot orchestrate a well run backline with such little technical input. Hence our aimless shuffling down the line or the the shoveling to a pod or a forward. We played very basic rugby under Peter. The worst I have ever seen at test level. Minus Plum and Nienaber, the past four years would have been a real horror show. Wouldn’t have made it out of the group stage of the World Cup either.
14 Oct 2011, 12:24 pm
@pakslae(pakslae)-61:

we had ample opportunity to win the wallabies, the conspiracy theories is hogwash, however if i was a new Zealander that believes in fair sport for all, Iwould be embraced to call Bryce a fellow countrymen.

Hougaard vs Pretorius?
While I reckon Hougaard is a definite starter for the Bok backline, I would keep him at wing where he has impressed. He seems to revel in the space and runs amazing lines both as a premier ball-carrier and support player. Closer to the action however at scrummie, he has not been nearly as impressive, getting sucked in too much to make as many breaks and I think his kicking game is a weakness. I would definitely start with Sarel Pretorius at scrummie. The man has a great pass, pops up everywhere, breaks all the time, links the forwards and backs brilliantly, kicks ok, tackles like a demon and brings any team he plays in (even losing ones) alive. There’s a very good reason that of all the players they could have had, the Waratahs bought him as their foreign investment.
14 Oct 2011, 14:50 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-66: No, it’s the truth. Your hatred of Jake is because he is white, you exposed that last year, and again with Mallett. As you said, Peter was going to show up the whitey. It never happened, just as your prediction that Peter was going to walk through last years Tri Nations never happened. What an embarassing end for ou Pete. He had Nienaber reconstruct the Boks game for the World Cup. Add to that the quick fix Plum did for Pete in 2009 and it’s patently clear that Bleater duh Failures, **** Mire and Gary Mould achieved NOTHING on their own. Jake on the other hand had ALL the pressure, even had players selected for him, was hassled by the politicians, SARU and the Watson mafia and STILL comes out on top, that with an inferior pool of players to select from to boot! Jake had ONE bad TNs, Pete had ONE good one and it cannot even be attributed to him. His crazy subs and selections nearly blew the 09 TNs in every game too. No, it’s time to drop the anti-Jake tune. You’ve been pushing too long and it’s been exposed each and every time. Jake was no God of rugby, but he was a better coach than these three stooges. Our best coach post readmission at the very least. You are a very sad little thing.
14 Oct 2011, 14:53 pm
What i dont understand is why do they keep harping on with players like Brits. He is no ways in the league of any of our current hookers. So what if he was the top forward in the NH.
14 Oct 2011, 14:57 pm
@Reserve Naartjie(Reserve Naartjie)-73:
Hahahahahahahah “Sarel Pretorius tackles like a demon” Joke of the month goes out to you!
Sarel was the player with the most missed tackles out of all the players who played S15 this year!!!!!
14 Oct 2011, 14:58 pm
@Reserve Naartjie(Reserve Naartjie)-73:
Anyone saying Sarel Pretorius “tackles like a demon” is exaggerating, a hell of a lot.
The guy missed the most tackles of ANY PLAYER in the Super 15 2011. Most of the time got brushed aside, looking like a complete fool.
I’d agree that he runs excellent support lines and is dangerous ball in hand, but his defense is shocking.
Not to mention, handing a player a Springbok debut while he is playing overseas does not go down well in my books. Only players who have made a name for themselves at test level should be afforded that privilege.
14 Oct 2011, 14:59 pm
@patch(patch)-75: He was tried at his peak in 2008 against Italy in the wet at home. It was a perfect game to see what he could do. He failed spectacularly, along with Watson, Bobo, Grant and Frans (10). At least Peter saw through the hype for once and never selected him again. Chiliboy has been in very good form the entire year, and between him and Bismarck we need noone else, though Gary Botha is there.
14 Oct 2011, 15:00 pm
@Chris4Lions(Chris4Lions)-76:
Everyone on here touting Sarel Pretorius lately. Not sure what’s going on!
Seems everyone is willing to forgive that part of his game because they want to see the Boks score tries… but it really isn’t that simple is it.
Don’t worry though, by the end of the Super 15 no one will want him anymore. He won’t last long in that Waratahs line-up.
14 Oct 2011, 15:03 pm
@hendrikp(hendrikp)-79: If you want a team to score tries, sort out your centres. That’s where the angles to attack are. not 9 or 10. They are your link. A team that scores tries ALWAYS has a solid centre pairing. ALWAYS. But some lessons are harder to learn than others it would seem, and doff Saffers still expect our half backs to score all the tries. Lunacy.
14 Oct 2011, 15:04 pm
@hendrikp(hendrikp)-79:
Who knows, maybe the warathas will teach him how to tackle. I wont slam the player, he is good, but at this level you gotta tackle
14 Oct 2011, 15:06 pm
Does anyone know if there are any big centre coming through in the ranks wich is taller than 1.9m and over 100kg’s in SA
14 Oct 2011, 15:10 pm
@Alucard: I just don’t understand this thinking behind most players that play overseas. Proof was Frans Steyn when he played in Durban this year and it look like he had eat one two many french pies. I think only Percy seem to benefited from playing overseas.
14 Oct 2011, 15:10 pm
I would like to see an attacking backline consisting off:
9. Hougaart
10. Jantjies
12. F.Steyn
13. Fourie
11. Mvovu
14. Aplon
15. Lambie
With De Jong, Habana, Goosen on bench.
I would like tosee these guys preform if the forwards dominate
14 Oct 2011, 15:12 pm
@Alucard(Alucard)-74: “As you said, Peter was going to show up the whitey. It never happened, just as your prediction that Peter was going to walk through last years Tri Nations never happened.” – where did i say all these things? supply the evidence re_tard
you’ve got nothing on me boy but conjencture!
grow up and quit being obsessed with either loving or hating coaches…
i don’t hate/love any coach, their work is all i examine!
now run along and bring that evidence.
PS. how many consultants did jake use from the time he started coaching the Boks in 2005 up until the RWC in 2007?
14 Oct 2011, 15:13 pm
@Alucard(Alucard)-80:
Uh we’ve got the centres… what we need is a game plan that allows them time and space to work with, and players who put them in a good position.
Scrumhalf has become probably one of the most important positions for an attacking side. You won’t get much done without a good one… which is probably why the Cheetahs went from scoring tons of tries in the Super 15, to struggling to score 2 a game at the start of the Currie Cup.
Also have to see what Genia offers to Australia for example… they’re far less accurate without him.
@Chris4Lions(Chris4Lions)-82:
How big is Jan Serfontein? JP du Plessis isn’t 1.9m but he’s really sturdy.
14 Oct 2011, 15:14 pm
@patch(patch)-83: Frans is bigger, but stronger. Lost none of his pace or mobility. He is a far more threatening presence than he ever was a few years back. France has made him a vastly superior player to when he left. Lets face it, France will always be a better place for a backline player to grow than South Africa. We have pathetic coaching. But always remember that Frans is no 15. Never was. He is a 12, simple as that. That much has come out of his own mouth.
14 Oct 2011, 15:15 pm
@Chris4Lions(Chris4Lions)-84:
Give it up with Jantjes man. Not going to happen, not as a starter long-term anyway. He’d have to have a half-decent S15, and he’s not exactly blowing away poor opposition in the Currie Cup.
I’d hate to see that backline play a test match.
14 Oct 2011, 15:18 pm
@hendrikp(hendrikp)-86: Your 9 is your prime link yes, your attackers are your centres, your finishers your wings. We do not produce many good centres. Of the entire 2000s we’ve had Jean, Joubert, Fourie, Frans and Fleck as genuine test quality centres. The rest have failed miserably or just are unable to make the step up.
14 Oct 2011, 15:19 pm
@patch(patch)-83:
Frans Steyn is fine. Was our best backline player at the World Cup, and a lock as starting 12 for the next 4-5 years at the very least. Very dangerous player.
Francois Venter will eventually, most likely, become his deputy.
14 Oct 2011, 15:20 pm
@Alucard(Alucard)-80: ” A team that scores tries ALWAYS has a solid centre pairing. ALWAYS” please tell us genius, how solid are Pat McCabe & Adam Ashley-Cooper as a centre combo? add Berrick Barnes, Anthony Faingaa, Rob Horne into the mix.
Australia score tries, how “solid” is their centre combo?
14 Oct 2011, 15:22 pm
@Alucard(Alucard)-89:
Phew I thought you were one of those who was about to tell me that Jean & Jaque aren’t test level centres.
Hit the nail on the head. I think we are in a lot better position at this stage though, with Johann Sadie & Juan de Jongh both capable players, and I think both Francois Venter and JP du Plessis have it in them as well.
We’ve hit a golden patch with talented centres.
14 Oct 2011, 15:23 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-91:
They won’t score a try on Sunday. You shall see!
14 Oct 2011, 15:27 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-85: It was there for all to see in the build-up to the Barbarians game. I don’t need to dig for anything gutter boy. I see you still haven’t returned that stolen laptop. And they say crime doesn’t pay. Not in handout South Africa though. I know it hurts you so much that Jake is better than Divvy, but you must accept reality. You tried very hard for four years to attack Jake, give it a rest! 2 IRB coach of the year awards, whilst Divvy will never have another coaching job for the rest of his life. At least not one of note that wasn’t handed out to him. Suck on that wench. You are too stupid to see how badly you exposed your support of Divvy was. What a credit to the new South Africa you are, uneducated, bitter, always looking for an excuse or to blame someone else. be gone, back to gutter you should never have been allowed to emerge from.
14 Oct 2011, 15:28 pm
@hendrikp(hendrikp)-90:
Ive been watching Jantjes for a long time. He is solid in defence, knows how to get a backline moving, got a good step, good attackling player. Good kicking game, and his goal kicking is good(Will get better). Everytime he gets the ball something positive can happen.
Defenensive lines always got to watch him, if not he will get through a gap, and because off this he creates space on his outside.
He makes the odd mistake, but he’s young and will learn. Excellent player to invest in over the next 4 years.
14 Oct 2011, 15:29 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-91: Australia are not always a try machine. In EVERY test where they are fronted with a physical and tight line, they struggle. Hence the thrashins against New Zealand, england, Wales, Samoa, beatings against Ireland and Scotland in recent years. I think you better readjust your perception of this Aussie side. But thanks for trying, I know it’s straining the capacity of the peanut between your ears.
14 Oct 2011, 15:31 pm
@Chris4Lions(Chris4Lions)-95: Agreed. He’s improved a lot over the past few months too. Most of the magic in that backline starts with him.
14 Oct 2011, 15:33 pm
@>^..^< katman(katman)-97: I would just like to see what he can do behind a Springbok pack
14 Oct 2011, 15:35 pm
@Alucard(Alucard)-94: ah, accusationg and no evidence hehehehe only namecalling and insults
14 Oct 2011, 15:37 pm
I think we need to face facts that for the next four years the following will still happen:
1. NZ will remain the #1 team in the world and should beat SA most of the time.
2. SA and OZ will compete for the #2 spot.
Until rugby becomes as dominant in SA as it is in NZ, we will remain 2nd to NZ. Personally, I’m ok with having a good rugby, cricket team, surfers who compete in the worlds top 10, top 10 golf players and olympic medal winners (note, I’m making no reference to our soccer for obvious reasons).
