Joubert to ref final

Joubert to ref final

South Africa’s Craig Joubert will referee Sunday’s World Cup final between the All Blacks and France.

Joubert, who took charge of the New Zealand versus Australia semi-final, becomes only the second South African to take charge of the grand final after Andre Watson, who has enjoyed the responsibility on two occasions. The appointment was made by the IRB’s Match Official Selection Committee in Auckland on Monday following a thorough review of performances during the knock-out phase.

Joubert will be joined by Alain Rolland (Ireland) and Nigel Owens (Wales) as assistant referees and Giulio De Santis (Italy) as Television Match Official.

Meanwhile, Wayne Barnes will take charge of the Bronze Final between Australia and Wales on Friday. The Englishman will be supported by assistant referees Romain Poite (France) and George Clancy (Ireland) with Shaun Veldsman (South Africa) as Television Match Official.

IRB Referee Manager Paddy O’Brien said: ‘The IRB Match Official Selection Committee was delighted with Craig and Alain’s performances in the semi-finals. Alain will perform the reserve referee role should he be required.

‘We may be nearing the conclusion of what has been a truly superb Rugby World Cup, but our focus remains firmly on consistency, penalising the clear and the obvious and tackling the ‘big five’ areas.

‘Collectively we continue to work together as a unit and maintain a zero tolerance attitude towards infringements and foul play across the key areas of the game. In that regard, I would also like to thank the coaches for their buy-in to the process during this tournament.’

Joubert said: ‘It is an enormous honour to get the final and I would like to thank Paddy and the Committee for giving me the opportunity. The whole team has performed superbly, assisted each other and bonded over the course of the last six weeks and I would like to thank them for their support and best wishes. I am now really looking forward to getting out there and enjoying the occasion.’

@TheTackler(TheTackler)-2: I thought I read above that ” the appointment was made by the IRB’s Match Official Selection Committee.” Or does Paddy dictate everything regarding referees? If that’s the case, then he has to take complete responsibility for some of the most inconsistent and woeful refereeing ever seen at a Rugby World Cup. In fact, the standard could only improve if he called it a day.

I enjoying seeing Mark Keohane on NZ’s 60 minutes last night, for some reason he looked a lot sharper than he comes across on the KeoTv spots here, and I’m not talking about the video definition. Respectfully may have been because he was sitting down.

Hopefully watching the streamed video works outside NZ.
Picking Oz to win was like his way of ensuring NZ the win, so please pick France to win this week Mr Keo, thanks.

    @James in NZ(James in NZ)-4:

You need to forgive Mark. He’s quick to ‘worship’ certain players.

He sees the game as what the superstars can do, instead of the balance of the team (and after that comes the x-factor that players like Carter provides).

He’s got the same fantasies about Joe van Niekerk & Butch James. Both good players no doubt but he made them out to be the greatest.

Anyway, congratulations to the All Blacks on winning the World Cup. With a decent referee they aren’t going to lose to the French. Guaranteed.

    Paddy calls the shots.

It’s a joke, I know… but at least he heard what we were saying. Paddy may have just saved his job by appointing a half decent referee for an important game for once.

Game over France. The last time NZ lost under Joubert was in 2008 against Australia. He allowed Sivivatu to be tackled with out the ball by Hynes on the try line and in the end cost the All Blacks. He came under heavy criticism and since then has never allowed the All Blacks to come close to losing. He will not allow his job, his livelihood to come under scrutiny again. He is absolutely terrified of the All Blacks. France to be penalized off the field.

Joubert is streets ahead of the other options .while he did do a decent job yesterday I thought he tended to favour the ABs . I don’t care who wins the cup as long as it is a fair contest and both teams are given a chance to play

p.s screw Bryce Lawrence hope he never refs another game again.

@TheTackler(TheTackler)-10: Ask yourself if the standard of refereeing has attained the standards expected by players, coaches and spectators in a World Cup, widely regarded as the pinnacle in rugby union. Then, if you still think IRB referees boss PoB should be lauded, it will only emphasise what most bloggers on here think and often say about you: Your knowledge of the game is dangerous.

    Bok
we know if the ABs win it will not be a fair contest. Most in here believe the only way NZ can win is to cheat or the ref cheats for them.
Its a pity really as if a person new to rugby opened keo up and read some of the comments that are on here, they probably would never want to watch another game .
If france win its cos we were useless and the refs didnt cheat for us.
On here the ABs will not win no matter what.

@Hurricane(Hurricane)-17: Remember, many Saffa supporters have openly said the ABs are the best team in the world and deserve to win the World Cup. Personally I hope they do. It would be well deserved after all their success in Tests over the years. And it would be a huge fillip for a nation that has been dealt cruel blows by Mother Nature. It’s time for NZ to have something to celebrate and the ABs should be deserving national heroes next Sunday night.

    Being serious?

Craig Joubert has no bias towards any team. The most reliable referee in the world at the moment. It had to be between him & Kaplan really.

I’d have said Wayne Barnes was also a choice in that top-3 referees, but it would be unfair to put him in a position where, if it were a close game and he made even a single mistake, would end his career and probably result in him having to put up with much more abuse and threats then he had to endure last time around.

Let’s hope he’s anonymous and we get a decent game with consistent refereeing. Am I correct in saying that every world cup final that has not had the boks in it has been reffed by a saffa? That says a lot for our systems-maybe it’s the very hostile club scene that is a good breeding ground.

I’d be very quiet and cautious as a kiwi supporter this week.playing bogey team france, and one flyhalf injury away from stephen donald as your pivot.not a ‘fait au compleat’

I’ve realised that the severity with which a ref blows on his whistle has a huge inmpact on how he is perceived by players and spectators. And it sets the tone for the level of co-operation he will get from the players.

For example, most Northern Hemisphere refs – as well as some plonker local refs like this newbie Lourens van der Merwe plonker in the Currie Cup – tend to blow as if it’s a rape whistle with which they are trying to attract a policeman’s attention. Ear piercingly loud, trying to stamp down their authority and making the offending player know he was a bad boy and is in for some punishment.

It’s the headmaster style, and it’s pathetic.

Mentally you just cringe when you hear the whistle go again. Kind of expecting a red card each time, even if it was just an accidental offside. The whistle shrieks in your ear.

In contrast, refs like Joubert and Kaplan tend to tone down the usual whistle sound. I particularly like it when even penalties are given a run of the mill knock-on type of short soft whistle sound.

Only when an offense is particuarly severe will they put their lungs into that whistle.

Wannabe headmasters like Nigel Owens and his northern hemisphere pals though, even a knock on sounds like a Sydney coathanger tackle just took someone’s head off.

Good refs tone it down, and as a result they are less noticeable and at times you even forget they are there, as you should in an ideal game.

for anyone other than a keewi who needed confirmation that saffa refs are fair and honest…there it is….

unlike anzacs cousins we dont ned to cheat our way to winning.

    sad for them.

  • 38.justrugby: Reply to this comment

I thought I understood the laws at the breakdown , the arriving players must stay on their feet and support their own body weight ??

Then why at just about every breakdown were the AB’s allowed to go off their feet , allow to lay on the wrong side and slow the ball down ?,I thought Craig was stricter on the Aussies than the AB’s on this aspect. Not saying this to take away anything from the AB’s win, but I just do not understand how at times sides get blown for this and at other times for the exact same offence , the game is allowed to go on.

    Drives me insane !!!

This world cup will be remembered for the shocking standard of the officials. At least one of the better ones gets the final.
Still a bit peeved that we were deprived of a classic semi between Kiwi’s and Boks by a sub standard ref.
In all probability the AB’s would have beaten the Boks so everything is as it should be.
As long as the AB’s play to their potential they will easily win the cup. I can’t see a choke happening as these players particularly RM have been there before and don’t strike me as types who don’t learn from experience.

Note how easily the ABs totally neutralised David Pocock? The AB ball carrier simply ran straight into his embrace, so that he wouldn’t ever be the “clean-out” second-arriving man, but had instead been suckered into being the first-time tackler!

    Outstanding!
